maybe just maybe..... this team hasnt perfected the 3-4, you know if what the coaches say is true, we make too many mental errors, i would think most of those come from our 4 linebackers, add to that poor safety coverage. and this might be some of the reasons as to what happened last night.

but most of all it should fall on the coaching staff, and the fact that Peyton and Gibbs knew each player and their tendacies. they fully took advantage of that in every way. this game maybe a huge blessing in disguise, as they say....you learn from your mistakes.:starspin

we play the most basic 3-4 in history and we haven't even come close to perfecting that!

all that tells me is that, our coaching staff cant coach if that were true.

all last year i read about how bad our staff was. but new orleans is our last years staff and they looked pretty good. maybe, just maybe our staff is not as bad as some think. maybe, just maybe the players just have'nt got it done on the field

I agree with that but it's also the DC's job to make sure the players understand it and get the job done.

If we went back to the 4-3, we'd have 1 less pass rusher on most passing downs unless we blitzed more (which we seem hesitant to do....)

I think the key here is to use both schemes and mix it up a bit. Base can be 34 or 43, I don't care. However, we have personnel to run both with very little substitution. I think that we need to look at running a combination a bit more. The NFL is about creating miss matches. This is one way of doing that.

To be honest, it really surprises me that we haven't done more of this already. You look at our personnel and Canty is a natural LDE in a 43. Ferguson has been a better 1/2 technique DT then NT. Spears has played both LDE in a 34 and 3 Technique while at LSU. Ware can slide to RDE or play Rush LB on either side in a blitz situation. Singleton or Ayodele can play OLB. Ayodele or James can play MLB. Heck, you could probably even slide Roy down to play Will and bring in Glenn to play at FS. Davis plays a much better Strong then Free. I know it's not as easy has having a guy line up and play but most of these guys have good experience in a 43 scheme. Seems as if it would be a natural thing to do.

Who knows, maybe if we're lucky enough to get to the playoffs, we will end up doing this against one of those teams.

Exactly.

It'd be nice to have a DC who actually had some balls for a change.

And he hasn't gotten them to understand the 3-4 or the 4-3 in how many years since he's been here?

I still have no clue how he escapes all blame.. it's always the players fault and never his.

It just amazes me.

I don't think the 3-4 or 4-3 eliminates the issue that New Orleans exploited, which is the lack of an inside pass rush. What does this cause?

* To get a pass rush, you have to rush the outside backers and that leaves holes in the flat.

This has been exacerbated by the loss of Ellis. Before you could rush either Ellis or DeMarcus Wade, and keep the other back. Now, it's pretty much you -have- to rush Wade.

Hatcher may be the solution to this dilemma long term, or Hatcher and a nose tackle with some rushing skills, or maybe it'll be getting an inside LB who can rush. I don't know. But right now with our 3 base DL and 2 ILB not generating much of a pass rush, good teams can exploit those elements that can.

the 3-4 isn't an easy D, and it takes a few years for it to be acclimated

it doesn't help that most of our front 7 personnel are either new to the NFL, or new to the scheme, only 2 players have previous 3-4 experience, and one's in his 2nd year

We play the 3-4 likes it the 4-3. We have the same exact guys rushing the passer on every play! Its essentially the 4-3... we just have 1 guy (Ware) standing up.

Watch the Chargers... they have different guys rushing the passer on EVERY PLAY! We do the exact opposite.

If we had a DC who knew what the hell he was doing it would help a ton. We run the worst 3-4 I have EVER seen.

everyone recalls the great Play Ware made on the Colts at the end of the game... Mr. Payton also took notice!!! Check out the play where the FB catches a pass in the flat and dives for the endzone before being Blocked out of bounds (nice form) By Henry for the TD!

Payton design was flawless based on what he knew about WARE ability! He had 2 WR cross Ware's face going in diferent directions one for the back corner of the endzone and the other with some type of slant decoy... all the while Karney was sprinting for the flat!!! Well needless to say Ware reaction to what he saw with the WRs cost him depth and that split second he needed to beat Karney to the corner!!!

talk about out coaching!!!

this was an excellent Job by Payton and he is one of my favorite young coaches as well as the team he created out of BP junk and other misfits!!!
