Start with QB, because every team starts with the QB. Dallas has a "paid-like" franchise QB. Romo is good but its clear his body has taken more then enough hits and its starting to show. Now IDK if the injury that shut him down this yr was just aggrivated at the end of the yr, or just an extension of what happened earlier in the offseason. But more and more people in the media and whatnot are starting to question the whole cyst thing. Could Romo have hid the severity of discomfort he's been in because of the whole contract discussion? IDK but seeing him fall to the ground alot this yr before def players even touched him could be seen as that might be the case. Who knows, i just know theyre stuck with him for atleast 1 more yr.

Does the team go out and draft for the future or risk being stuck with a hurt expensive QB and no young gun in your stable? Its clear Dallas has a capable backup, but is that enough? Or smart?

Defensive Line, Dallas has FA's to be in Spencer and hatcher, and a injured Demarcus Ware and Crawford. After that they have a bunch of journeymen. Albeit one in Selvie that could start. I hear alot of people say resign Spencer for something cheap. Thats not happening. Nor should it. First theres going to be a team that could give more. Somebody will give this guy 4-5 mil a yr or even on a yr deal. Could Dallas do that? NOPE. Then there is Hatcher, this is the guy if they could resign they should. But even then all he spoke about at the end of the yr was his money. I say go get it and have a good life. Now comes the biggest headache i think Dallas has right now. Ware, Do you release him, restructure him, or ask him to take a pay cut? I hope the team takes the whole emotional aspect out of this and treat it like a business move. Because clearly Ware has. This guy is not worth 16 mil a yr. I dont even think he's worth the 8 he would get in a restructure, right now. In the state his body is in. Ill add that in because a healthy Ware is worth some money. With what teams are giving DEs in FA now Ware wouldnt find 8 mil a yr in the market. The team needs to take a stand. Release him and sign him to a one day contract when he's ready to retire. What this does for the Cowboys is brighten the future cap wise.

So if that happened Dallas would have 1 guy proven as a starter(Selvie) and 1 guy who they want to be a starter(Crawford). Could they find 2 starters in the draft?

Safety, this spot while every fan would say Dallas needs a safety, something tells me this team is going to let these young safeties develop and work from there. Church is going to be one of the starters. Thats clear. I think we will see Wilcox, Heath and yes Johnson compete for the other starting spot. They just seem to like these 3 kids. My hope would be that Wilcox just comes in and takes the job.

Romo and his back surgery are not serious injuries at all. This is one of the least career threatening surgerys that he couldve had.
Nothing like a ACL/MCL or Shoulder injury.
Ive spent some time working on a neuro unit and had pre op and post op patients with the exact same issue, and in some cases probably much more severe. I can remember the surgeon having to remind them not to come back to full duty too quickly. The relief is almost immediate...
It terms of a surgeries that a QB would have, this one is one of the least severe.

Yes, the defensive line is an absolute abomination. Hate it or not I fully expect Ware to be here next year... I dont mind I think he will have a bounce back year. I dont know how much faith Id put in Selvie and I dont think he should be anything more than a guy to rotate in and out. However, with only Ware being back (he will be back) and probably losing the others I think will force Selvie into a starting position.

It's a good post and I agree with everything. Even laying off the safety pick and concentrating on the trenches. Things that us outsiders don't know about. How is TR really doing health wise. ditto M Johnson ditto D Ware ditto S Lee

edit: ditto the rest of the beat up crew.

pretty much with you all the way on this one.
As we all know we're in a quadmire of poor talent and bad contracts coming to a prefect storm.Yes we can lower the cap and yes Romo is our best hope. So how does Stephen Jones make the decending field production from the older players max with the ascending financial cap values?

I think they have no choice but to release Ware and Austin at the least. Next yr Dallas has Tyron, Dez, Carter, Harris, Beasley. Murray, Leary. All are going to need to be resigned.

What makes me laugh about fans is they jerry jones keeps players too long, but they say things like "i can live with Ware another yr".

Yes, Ware can stay... and he will. Id like him to make less money but he was banged up all year. If anyone can have a bounce back year its Ware. Wouldnt be shocked one bit if he were a force next year with 15 sacks. He had a bad year so I guess we are just going to pretend like he he doesnt have over 100 sacks and isnt far removed for a 20 sack season followed by a 11.5 with 5 forces fumbles... Yes indeed, cut the most dominate defensive lineman capable of big plays, yes indeed. Your plan of starting Selvie seems like a great idea....

We already discussed that they can sign free agents if they want to go that route.

Even if they don't want to sign big name expensive free agents, there are plenty of young mid-tier guys available.

Seattle has several free agents with 3 of them on the DLine. They have DT Tony McDaniel 28 and his backup DT Clifton McDonald 27. McDonald appears to play as many snaps as McDaniel. I would expect 1 of them to be available. They are not star players but they're solid NFL players that are playing on one of the top defenses in the league and played in playoff game today.

Other than the way he took some sacks, I'd like to hear more of the evidence you have on Romo to jump to the conclusion that he hid injury symptoms in an effort to get more money out of Jones. I've seen way too much anecdotal evidence on Romo's behavior to think otherwise.

Wait! McDonald 27 and McDaniel 28 ....are these brothers? ;)

I don't think Romo is done, but we do need to draft his replacement within the next 3 drafts. This draft appears to be much strong than the next 2 drafts at QB, so it might be a better idea to go QB in this draft. We could probably get a guy at 16 this year who would go top 5 next year. I don't think the QB need is as urgent as DL and safety, but it might be the smartest move long-term.

3 positions with questions: DT, DT, DE

im willing to bet Crawford is starting at 1 DT spot next yr. The problem is this draft isnt very good for the DTs Marinelli likes. Any DT ovr 305 most likely wont be in dallas. Guys like Donald, Jernigan, Mauro, Gardner are the guys that marinelli likes. IF Gardner is healthy enough to go thru the combine and proday i would love for dallas to go after. All these other guys are more on expectations for them to be good. Gardner is an absolute beast. If he was healthy he wouldve been a first round guy and probably the top DL

Dude hate to break it to you but if Ware played for the Patriots he would've been cut last year.

Age gets everybody. At what age do you think he will slow down because his production doesn't lie.

He wouldve been cut after 11.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles?

Who knows what age he will slow down. He did absolutely have a down year, but it happens. How old was the NFL sack leader this year?

Im sorry I keep using sacks as the main stat but its probably the most accurate for his position, but I understand there is much more to it.

Anyway, given that hes really not that old. Hes got some miles on him but it doesnt seem wise to cut him and assume that someone like him isnt capable of a strong bounce back season. There have been several that have had some of their best seasons after 30. If anyone can return to dominate form, Id say it would be someone like Ware.

Okay -- fair enough. I love him and I hope you are right and I'm wrong but it's a case of Jerryitis to fall in love with payers over 30 with injury problems along with a lack of production.

I really hope you're right.

lol Oh, I have a tendency to hang on too long myself. Never got the actual diagnosis until now. Jerryitis? Can it be cured with Viagra?

I do often let my emotions/loyalty cloud my judgement. From my 75% Cowboy fantasy team, to still believe that Miles will go off for a 200 yard game all the way until week 16. It would break my heart to see Ware in another uniform. Hell, I was in the dumps seeing Robinson leave and it will be the same for Austin for sure.
Ware is due to make to much money, that pretty much a fact. I dont think we will ever see 20 from Demarcus again but I still feel that perhaps 15 isnt that much of a longshot.

I appreciate your sarcasm however looking at the last two years of Wares production, injuries and his age I think anyone fluttering their lips at that reality, is well overly sarcastic

Hmm last year 11.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles... arent you hard to please.
Yes, he was injured this year and missed 3 games. Perhaps Jerry can lure the Wolverine to Dallas so injuries will no longer be an issue.
Age? Many defensive lineman have had some of their best years after turning 30.

Those are good numbers for a good pass rusher however those numbers reflect a descending productivity from an all time great player.Ware's numbers next year will get us what? You expect a bounce I expect 2013 again.
