Other than the way he took some sacks, I'd like to hear more of the evidence you have on Romo to jump to the conclusion that he hid injury symptoms in an effort to get more money out of Jones. I've seen way too much anecdotal evidence on Romo's behavior to think otherwise.

I think some of this theory comes from the "perceived" lack of zip/deep throws. Game plan and Romo being more secure with the football are the other reasons to account for the change in deep shots taken this season. There were quite a few ducks on deep passes this year that were uncommon from Romo. As a fan I will admit concern on some of these misses throughout the season as they seemed un-TR like. Hope it's not the case and Romo's recent surgery is not career threatening as TT implied. The league is too watered down to give up completely (not restructuring Romo; blowing it up completely) but feel the whole D needs talent and unless Ware takes a drastic pay cut the team should move on. Love Ware, Love da Cowboys more.

That answers the question about the possibility of the injury affecting him all season. Does not address the OP's claim that Romo hid this injury from Jones during contract negotiations.

3 positions with questions: DT, DT, DE

If you are saying that is all of the questions, I disagree. We should look at both DE positions. Safety is still a concern as well as Lb. On offense Romo is questionable because we don't know how he will return from the surgery, and we still need to address our guards.

Romo and his back surgery are not serious injuries at all. This is one of the least career threatening surgerys that he couldve had.
Nothing like a ACL/MCL or Shoulder injury..

Not to get into a large debate, but knee injuries are much less an issue than back injuries. Back injuries are chronic and while surgery cn provide immediate pain relief, the issue never goes back to 100%. Brady ad a nasty ACL and that has not slowed him down. Same with AP. Its hard to say the back won't continue to degenerate, those things never improve and strengthen with age. Its not about "pain" and feeling good. Its about ability to continue playing PRO FOOTBALL. Violent Twisting and turning is not going to help

Only chance is if Romo turns into a workout warrior (a la Brees) and builds his core and flexibility

Perhaps youve had more experience dealing with these particular procedures.
No need for the debate. Ive seen many of the surgerys and heard many, many surgeons instruct patients pre and post op. None of them were NFL QBs but there were many with very labor intensive jobs such as iron workers and such.
"back injuries are chronic" really? Its very likely it will NOT degenerate.

If the injury/surgery is what its reported to be, its not serious at all (in terms of having an invasive procedure) and absolutely nowhere near having a ACL repair. Not even close.

Not all back injuries are chronic. People, including Pro athletes have had herniated disks repaired with no recurring pain or issues.

Now if you said that back issues have a higher probability of being chronic than an ACL injury, then I would agree with that statement.

What should be cause for alarm is that surgery was done within the week. That likely notates a 15-20MM herniation or numbness signifying nerve damage. Surgery is usually a last resort after all other treatments are exhausted in back injuries. Also, it is very unlikely that it was only 1 disc with a herniation (though the main disc can cause 100% of the pain.) usually the surrounding discs have minor stresses also - hence the more likelihood of recurrence. Fusing vertebrae is a much riskier surgery than an ACL and mobility is never 100% as it was. Plus there is risks of spinal canal narrowing and bone spur growth in the canal after surgery. Minimal yes - but a risk.

Romo may be the same Romo, but there is more risk that he wont be the same from a back injury versus a knee injury. It just seems there is a large amount of minimalizing what may be an issue from strength

He did not have a his vertebrae fused. He would not have been back at the facility in a few days if he had fusion surgery.

The people that I've known that had herniated disks, had endoscopic surgery. Just 3 small incisions for the tools and camera-scope. The recovery time was minimal.

Microdiscectomy uses a special microscope to view the disc and nerves. This larger view allows the surgeon to use a smaller cut. This causes less damage to surrounding tissue.

During discectomy, the surgeon removes the part of the disc that is herniated and is pushing into the spinal canal. Any loose fragments of disc are also removed.

I agree, and don't believe Romo did anything underhanded. Was just pointing out where that "traction" stems from. For all we know JJ knew it was more than a cyst and didn't want the bad PR from resigning a QB who just had back surgery (not likely).

The post didn't say "3 only spots with questions."

The proof is in the pudding, though -- two of the four remaining teams (SF and SEA) both have absolutely outstanding defensive fronts that can get pressure up the middle with the defensive linemen alone. If we are to compete in the NFL, we need that. Nobody can sit here and tell me that San Francisco's cornerbacks are better than ours, and their safeties are marginally better. However, that pass rush (and if they're good at rushing the passer, they're usually good at stopping the run) is the reason why the defense is that good.

There are 11 guys on defense and three major units - front, backers, secondary. The focus absolutely needs to be on developing and putting in place a dominating defensive front four. If we do that, the play of the other units will improve considerably.

"Addressing the guards" would be a colossal mistake. We have one of the best offensive lines in football and arguably the best run blocking offensive line in football. Ronald Leary will only get better, and Mackenzie Bernadeau is entering his prime as a professional athlete at his current age and with more stability and cohesion will only also continue to get better. Next year might be the best year we see yet from Doug Free at RT, too, with that same consistency. Don't fix what ain't broke.

The have Zero depth at Guard. Leary had a problem with his good knee in training camp and his bad knee (OCD) could pop at any minute. Bernadeau had 2 separate injury issues all of 2012 and has had 2 surgeries in the 2 years that he has been with the Cowboys.

The interior backup is Phil Costa. I don't know if he is even an option at Guard or if they would move Fred to Guard with Costa at Center in the event of an injury to a starting OG.

Add to that the fact that Romo is an aging QB that has had 2 back surgeries in the past year.

They can't afford NOT to address the Guard position.
