3 WR set

With passing being the trend in today's NFL and the fact that we just acquired Dez Bryant, I can't help but think about how lethal our 3 WR set can potentially be. I'm a firm believer in having your best players at the best positions on the field at all times. I can see us using the 3 WR set as our primary offense because we have the personnel to succeed with it. With Felix becoming the starter, he compliments this offense with his ability to break a play at any time.

While I think Dez would make a great wide out, I think we'll see him more in the slot. But I also think Garrett will create situations where there is a slot receiver on many occasions, whereas Dallas' bread and butter once was the 2TE set.

This is an interesting contrast of our old offense because we had some success running that offense with draws from Julius and extra blocking for Romo's learning curve.

But old times have passed and I think our new base offense is the 3 WR set. It gives us our best shot to win because it puts our biggest play makers on the field all at once.

Thoughts?

I think you'll still see the 2-TE set as the base offense. Let's not forget tha the TEs Coach is the Offensive Coordinator's brother. But the 3 WR set is so compelling on paper right now, that this is why we'll see TEs taking over the FB position. That's because when you have to go 3-wides, then the best way to get a TE on the field and still create a mismatch is thorugh the H-back role.

Or the slot... especially when you have 3 elite WRs. And a guy that can go up and catch anything in traffic or otherwise.

This is basically what you're talking about:

19...88...68..63..65..70..75..82.......11
........................9..........................
.......................28..........................

How do you stop this?

You've got Felix with a little 5 yard checkdown route, Miles running a post, Dez with a deep slant to the inside, RW11 with the quick slant, and Witten attacking inbetween the hashes. The deep targets are reliable hands players, and the short-yard targets are playmakers after the catch.

Lord.

This is going to give teams nightmares

Boom. Felix on the draw gets more mileage out of him and gives him more opportunities to break the big plays. I think he gets his 1,000 yard season just because we'll give him the carries.

But yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I think it turns into our base offense. We still have some good blocking at WR.

Don't know if we'll see less two TE sets. But I would think/hope will see less two backs sets with a FB for more 3 WR sets.

Dez with a deep slant to the inside.

Lord.

The good ole 40 yard slant, definitely one of my favs

He wasn't even talking about anything close to that.

I'll make sure I lift the sarcasm sign for you next time

Here's what I'd like to see our base offense run. Not including 3rd and long or short yardage.

2WR, 2TE, 1RB for 50% of our plays.

3WR, 1TE, 1RB for 35% of our plays.

2WR, 1TE, 2Backs with Barber at FB for 15% of our plays.

Sorry, some have taken that overboard for rhetorical purposes. I took it the wrong way, apparently.

Conversely, there is a weak spot to the offense. That is, Felix isn't the best blocker out of the backfield. But he is effective on the screen. So beware.

As I've said 10,000 times on this forum (almost) the elite offenses are pass-centric, and the pass-run balances of the top offenses all tilt about 60-40 pass.

I'm a fan of the 3 WR receiver set because you can do a lot with that formation:

-Flood an area of the zone
-Create a mismatch because few defenses have 3 solid corners
-You put a lot of speed on the field and speed kills

lets just hope the oline can hold up even if we do have all that talent

Roy feels the heat. You've got a rookie trying to get all the advice he can from one of the best receivers we've had (Irvin). Roy blew him off. Don't think that hasn't gone unnoticed by everyone.

This basically matches 2009's statistics, which saw 2+ TE packages get about 55% of snaps, 3+WR packages get about 32% of snaps, and the 21 package get about 11% of snaps.

Hard to see any less of the 21 package.

Barber playing fullback is not going to happen. They might stick both Felix and MB3 in there to create a guessing game and mismatch, but he's not and never will play in a traditional fullback role.

Just tackle the ball-carrier because Garrett called a freeze-draw :D ;)
