Our roster was terrible when Parcells took over.
Consider this, we relied on Quincy Carter and Troy Hambrick as starters. Neither are in the league anymore. To criticise him for that playoff loss to Carolina is a bit foolish. Did anyone actually think we'd win? Carolina went on to the Super Bowl and nearly won. Parcells did a helluva job getting that team anywhere near the playoffs.
The following season caught up with him. There still wasn't much talent in that group.
Last year was dissapointing after starting the season 7-3. But its not hard to see the downfall when you consider we couldn't protect Bledsoe. At all.
Tucker and Pettiti be damned.
This year, we went to the playoffs and lost a game we were an underdog in. After benching Bledsoe, many here thought we wouldn't sniff the playoffs. Then we rollercoasted to the top before plummeting. Despite that, with a QB with no previous experience, we made the playoffs and were perhaps a botched snap away from being in round two.
I am not saying Parcells was infallible. He made mistakes. He didn't take us deep in the playoffs as many of us had hoped for.
But his tenure here was not a failure. We've been searching for a QB since Troy retired. We have one. We have weapons on offense (Witten, Barber, Jones, Glenn, Crayton, Owens, Fasano....) that weren't here and leaps and bounds better than the Pre-Parcells era.
He has added young talent to a defense in Ware, Burnett, Carpenter, Newman, Canty, Spears, Hatcher, Ratliff, etc. Sure, they underperformed as a group. But we were relying on several second year players this year (Ware, Burnett, Canty, Spears, Ratliff).....Sophomore slumps do exist. Newman wasn't exactly playing spectacular in his second year. Ware didn't have a sophomore slump on the other hand, which we should all be greatful for.
But I guess its just easier to throw them (Canty, Spears, Burnett) to the curb as well as Parcells.
