What do you guys think of CB Trumaine Johnson of the Rams? Big player who had 7 picks in 2015. He won't be cheap obviously but the cap room to sign him is there.
That would be a great pick up bro! We could definitely use some CB help with mo and Carr potentially leaving ( although I think we will re-sign at least one of them). Good info!

I'd like to reply again, albeit maybe off topic. It seems like we are getting (hopefully continues) out of old habits of signing older players (Galloway, Ismail, etc). Lately we have not mortgage the house to re-sign Ware and others. I like that, if that's Jerry passing the hat to his son or coaches, I don't care. Just keep doing it.

I'd like us to get out of salary cap nightmare and focus on drafting. We still have a problem as of the 2017 draft, however much of that was from the past. Please no more pushing tons contracts to the future. Stop it. Keep it going, get out of it and build.

Pushing contracts is not a problem....in fact it is smart accounting

The problems in the past were drafting, trading for and extending the wrong guys

I think we are on the same point. However pushing contracts should be limited and only to a a few selected players.

Trading for and extending for the wrong guys (and signing them to contracts) were not good. I agree.

Restructure TSmith, Frederick, and Lee, extend Dez:

Cap space: Roughly 30mill.

Trade Romo for a third rounder and conditional in 2018-save 5mill.

What do you do?

Me:

RE-sign: Carr, Wilcox, Sanchez, Gachkar, T.McClain, McFadden, TWill, Irving, Dunbar, J.Crawford, Cooper

I like continuity, availability and appreciate role players which many of these guys are.

Total cap hit: approx 18-19mill

Sign:

Cordelle Patterson-I am not a huge fan of #13 myself. Too one dimensional for my liking and prone to fumbling, Patterson offers an upgrade as a returner and talented enough to develop as a WR still.

Andre Branch, DE-truth be told I would prefer Sheard, but something tells me he commands big bucks given his exposure with the Pats. Branch seems to be ascending and has very good ability.

Micah Hyde SS-Love his versatility and attitude. Good player, not sure if he will be overpaid but if not love for Cowboys to pick him up.

Draft:

Thought to say at this point:

Rd 1 targets-Taco Charlton, Solomon Thomas, Sidney Jones, Caleb Brantley

What does CowboysZone do with 30 mill in cap space and a low first rounder?
Gotta resign Claiborne. And I have a gut feeling he will re sign on the cheap. He has to prove he's worth his pick plus I'm sure he loves this team. I have no proof, I know. Just a feeling.

I

I give you Romo, what a pickle.
Romo has been one of the best contracts DAL has ever signed....we have gotten a star QB for 10 years and never had a cap hit above 15m til last year......the injuries don't lessen the value we got for Romo

Dead money is just money we saved when the cap was much lower so we could sign other players to help him win

You realize that the cap was 123m in 2013 and it is 168m this year......10m to Romo in 2013 hurt a lot more than it does now and next year the cap will be even higher

Romo cap hits:
8.9- 2007
4.5
4.5
12
6.4
8
11.8
11.7
14.9
20.6- 2016

Resign a few of our own players and save the rest. We have other players that will need to be signed in 2018. I hope we never make another Big Splash in free agency again.

when you see what the Giants did this year rebuilding their D in free agency it is tempting, but it rarely if ever works for Dallas.

Poe/Williams/Logan/Short.

We shouldn't leave FA without a pocket collapsing DT.

I'm with you, but I'm afraid we will be very disappointed. If somehow we did get one of those guys, Poe or Short would be my choice, I would cut tcraw to clear cap space and plan to go with Collins, Tapper, Irving, Short, Mayo, and Rookie (unless we could also go get Sheard or Ingram).

Also resign Mo and possibly Carr if they will sign for a reasonable price, along with Church.

Yep. I don't want McClain back. Sure, he was our best DT earlier in the season, but that's not really saying much. We need one true run-stuffing 1-tech, and that'll be Thornton. I can see us going back to a starting duo of T. Crawford at 3-tech and Collins at 1-tech if we get some help at DE. The only reason we moved Crawford this season was because we were desperate at DE. Draft another DT early to replace Crawford in a year, and spend some money and picks on DE.

Here's what I wanna see our D-line depth chart looking like next year:

DT - T. Crawford, Collins, Thornton, early-round draft pick
DE - high-priced free agent, early-round draft pick, Lawrence, Mayowa, Tapper
DE/DT - Irving

One, trusting Thornton might be a big risk. He wasn't great this year. Just so-so. Now maybe that's because he needed some time to adjust from a 3-4 DE...........or maybe he's just not a very good 1 tech.

Two, using a high pick on a 1 tech would be silly IMO. I'd rather then just sign someone in free agency.

If I had my druthers:

3 Tech - Crawford, Collins
1 Tech - McClain, Thornton
DE - Addison or Sheard, Mayowa, high round pick like McKinley
DE - Lawrence, Irving, Tapper

Maybe a mid to late rounder on a DT too. Sub in another FA DT for McClain if you wish. Maybe Hankins?

FWIW - My suggestion above is based on the belief that the FA will continue with their frugality in FA. So sure, I'd love Poe or Short at DT. But it's really not happening.

Cutting Crawford clears no cap space this year for free agency.

I didn't say to draft a 1-tech early. I said to draft a DT. Collins is big enough to play 1-tech and quick enough to play 3-tech. I think we can slide Collins over to 1-tech and draft a 3-tech to eventually replace Tyrone Crawford.

Right but it rids us of a bad contract going forward and a bit player not giving us anything

Except he's not unproductive like you think. People are enamored with his sack totals and he does more than that.

Is he great? Nope. Likely overpaid. But he's productive and if you cut him, you just created another hole to fill and no additional cap space to do it.
