That's nearly 10 penalties a game this preseason. Despite being the less aggressive team in all 4 games we still racked up more penalties than all of our opponents. Bad players leads to bad technique, I could see this being a year long problem.

It was pretty cringe worthy to watch, i agree.

Would be good to know how many came from starting players or at least the real 53, and how many were from players who won't make the team.

Yeah 9.5 penalties a game won't cut it. That's very disappointing but hopefully they cut that in half or more.

The thing is I could tolerate some penalties if this was a physical team like the Niners or Ravens.

How are you soft yet still heavily penalized?

To add on to that... a lot of these penalties moved our offensive drives back, killing the momentum. A couple defensive series kept the other team's offense on the field which lead to them scoring. We also seem to be the most penalized team in the league for holding haha.

Lack of instilled discipline and downside risk because of no depth

I *think* they went the first game with no penalties. It was all downhill from there. So you're talking about 38 penalties in 3 games. Not sure it makes you feel better.

To me the far bigger problem was the point differential... They're well on their way to having the worse point differential spread for any team this preseason.

We've had a couple at least of aggressive plays and also too much clinging as in the Mitchell technique. Some are presnap or mental mistakes. Most of the rest is from those trying to make a play and stand out. Unfortunately some of those ended up being for the wrong reason.

Not worried about stats but some are concerning. I don't like the sloppy play esp from the likes of Smith and Free. I don't like the offense not looking better although I'm sure they'll be more wide open. We've seen they can run the ball. There is no reason they can't pass it. I don't like the STs a lot but they aren't a big concern either. We definitely need to get better though esp on defense. That's not happening without the return of some vets esp to the DL.

Now, this is a useful level of information. 25 holding calls, 14 on defense and 11 on offense. I'd say the 14 on defense is pretty consistent with what we've seen from other teams this preseason (i.e., less that 4/game; not sure what the stat ended up being, but the numbers league-wide in the preseason for those penalties were intentionally ridiculous). The 11 offensive holding penalties in 4 games are alarming. Especially since 5 of them were from starters, and those guys really only played ~1.5 games worth of snaps.

It's not entirely dismissible either.

Depends on the calls, on which players were committing the penalties, and on how it compares league-wide. Then, of course, there's the fact that the refs were targeting the defensive holding calls to make a point this season. But DallasEast's post, above, makes the breakdown a lot more clear as to what's really going on.

I'm not sure how this is really all that surprising. This team has been plagued by penalty problems for years now. Sometimes they're a little better than others but for years now we've had penalty problems.

I thought penalties were a league-wide problem this preseason?

I don't know the stats but last year...I don't think we lead the league in penatlies....the timing of some of those penalties were crucial though.
