and....

I ask , which receiver has the speed to seperate and find the seam for a gain of 14?

I felt this was a huge problem for Vincenzo last season....and I still don't see that Speed guy....

Do you?

Glenn, Morgan or Witten. He could also hand off to Julius on a draw play, those worked quite well last season.

Glenn is still in the low 4.4 to high 4.3 40's if he's healthy we have the speed.

I don't think draw plays had anything to do with us losing 10 games last year

Dunno, but if it's 3rd and 11, hopefully he'll throw it to the one that'll get us a gain of 11 or more.

Terry Glenn with speed, Keyshawn with the slant. We'll see who is at that 3rd wr slot.

All that being said, i sure hope we don't end up in a 3rd and 11 situation too often anyway. Regardless of who is on your team, that is never easy to convert.

Are you serious? Glenn was injured after week 6. Morgan was injured the entire time he was here. Julius only played in the final 7 games. Not exactly what we had last season. Watch any of the clips JD or Calico has made. Watch Julius on those draws.

We have plenty of weapons if guys are healthy... who said you had to be a speed guy to pick up 11 yards??

Keyshawn, Witten, Glenn... those are the 3 main options

OK...so we're calling for screens and draws on 3rd and long....basically the JETS playbook....Insanity.

Terry Glenn is oft injured...not meant to run the slant 5 '9' 178...

Keyshawn Johnson couldn't outrun Derek Kenard...

Quincy Morgan has hands like feet...

More negativity I see. Nothing changes with you. Is there anything that you like?

You asked if the guy was on our team - we answered - and now you are going to tell us that it is moot because he is oft injured? You're tough to please.

So I will try harder.

1st - assuming Glenn is injured - you now have Crayton into the lineup. My sig speaks for what I feel about him. Though he isn't the fastest guy ever, I like him running a quick slant for a few yards, especially with his YAC ability. Regarding Key - not quick, but also dangerous on a slant play.

2nd - Quincy, regardless of what you think of his hands, has the speed, which is what you were asking us to identify. He makes drops, but he catches a ball here and there too. I guess we have to take our chances.

3rd - You asked who could get up the seam. That is what Witten excels with - he is a nightmare for LBers, and on 3rd and long, the safeties are already watching 3 WRs.

4th - I have named 4 potential receivers and what they bring - now, since you have refused to accept running a draw or a screen (which works pretty well for some teams, such as GB), Julius is still pretty speedy. Send him in motion to the slot, and I want to see what he can do as a receiver.

Finally, if all of that doesn't satisfy you, I am sorry. But the fact is, regardless of the speediness of a receiver, NO receiver in the NFL can hope to consistently 'break open' on 3rd and 11. It isn't as if any team excels in converting 3rd and long. If we get into such a situation often in the first place, we have problems that supercede an issue of 'not enough speed.'

Oh, must have been his inception to Cowboyszone.com. ;) Oh well. These threads grow tiresome and most of his titles to his threads are misleading to say the least. :banghead:

If you had to rank the attributes needed by a receiver to come up big "in the clutch", how would you rank them? I base my rankings on the greatest clutch receivers that I've had the pleasure of watching. Guys like Jerry Rice, Drew Pearson, Steve Largent, Andre Reed, James Lofton, Wes Chandler, Andre Rison, Mike Irvin, Art Monk and on and on. When I look at these guys and many others that I'm overlooking, here is what jumps out to me:
1: Want to. Desire. Clutch receivers want the ball to come to them when the game is on the line. You would be suprised how many guys Don't want the ball when it counts.
2. Knack. Instincts. A feel for the game. God given, cannot be taught.
3:Intelligence. Knowing what your QB wants and needs, ability to read coverages.
4: route/release skills: Can the guy get open or not?
5: Hands. So he's open, but can he catch?

So that is my top 5. If I kept going I'm not even sure if speed would be number 6. So in my best Tina Turner impression- "what's speed, got to do, got to do with it?"

Protection from the line and the recievers ability to gain position on the defender are much more in demand on 3rd and 11 than speed. If they remain healthy we have a good mix at reciever.

Excellent post.

No team in the NFL converts 3rd and 10+ at a high percentage.
