3rd String QB, My Convoluted Thoughts

I'll say it again, Bill Parcells is in charge. He makes moves to show he is in charge.

I have a mutal friend with Jon Beck. The day Parcells was hired by the Dolphins John told Jared he figured he was gone from Miami becaus ein his views Parcells had never liked him. Take that for whatever it is worth, but there have been articles in the Miami Herald saying the same thing.

He won't do that with young guys who he thinks can play, though. Big salary old dudes, like Zach, Jason and Emmitt - sure. Young players who he thinks can play - not a chance. And if you look at his time in Dallas, he didn't really make the wrong choice when it came to that - ie getting rid of a young promising player. In an instance like this, Mickey logic can come into play imo. If he was any good, Parcells wouldn't make him available.

They're not rushing to sign him! They are waiting till he can be cut without cost. If anything they can just evaluate him to see if he can actually be a valid backup. Is that not worth a couple of weeks worth of league minimum checks to possibility land a replacement for Johnson after this/next year?

I wouldn't sign him at all. For him to have value to this team he has to show that he can be Brad Johnson's replacement. We all know he will never be a viable replacement for Romo. That isn't even on the table.

And I know I will get BBQ'd probably for this, but I still believe that Parcells will take a bus driver over a high draft pick at QB, on his first instinct, almost every time, UNLESS HE DRAFTS him. (See Bledsoe) I can't remember, did he have a hand in drafting Pennington at the Jets?

So, no surprise to me if that is what happened to Beck.

No doubts about that. Simms numbers were just the worse of his career in his last action in 2006. The other two QBs that played in 2006 for the bad Tampa team posted better numbers across the board than Simms.

I agree with you. Why bother to add either Bollinger or Simms at this point? It really does not help the team this season or for the future. They would be better off signing a back up kicker/kick off specialist at this point.

I can see Simms adding value only in that he can be a viable replacement for Johnson. I just don't see where Bollinger is.

Maybe I just have blinders on or something, but he's a #3 QB, not a #2. Sign someone if they can be a future #2. I will have no issues with that at all.

2008 help or help for 2009 and beyond. The only reasons I would sign a QB.

I think I'm pro Bartel as the 3rd guy as long as he is on the PS.

I don't like Culpepper. I don't like the kind of person he is. Definitely not the type of person that the great Cowboys history was built on. He is the type to look down on others. I don't like that type of person and I would prefer not to taint the Cowboys with that type of person. There is a reason he doesn't have a job right now.

I'm not sure what that means. Parcells doesn't think he is quality? Well, he was drafted by the same idiot that drafted Ted Ginn Jr. (9th overall I beleive) in the first round so I would question any draft choices made by that person. Parcells has had some pretty good QBs during his coaching career. Phil Simms, Drew Bledsoe, Vinny Testaverde, and Tony Romo. If he doesn't like Beck, maybe there is actually something not to like about Beck.

I don't know much of anything about Beck, but if the wind is blowing in from the east and it stinks, then something probably stinks east of you.

He's a 27 year old player. I could see him maybe reaching Jon Kitna status, maybe. Otherwise, yeah - I'd say at this point you can book Beck as having a short, obscure career. Maybe he can be Shaun King.

I think we'd be much better served just using the draft pick we'd be wasting on a guy like Beck, and drafting someone next year or the year after.

Or, maybe we can pick up Beck when the Dolphins release him this offseason.

Maybe we can draft Cullen Harper in round 5

We heard things in Romo's first training camp that he had 'something'. And that's what qualified him for the #3 spot and a spot on the roster.

I disagree. He played fairly well on a lousy team.

A 5th now for a guy we can begin developing immediately seems better to me than a 4th in April 2009 for a guy we can't start developing until mini camps in may 2009.

Call me crazy.

What did those three guys have in common? They are pretty much on the last leg of their career. I think his reasoning was out with the old and in with the new and not I'm the boss and I'm going to get rid of people so other people know that I'm the boss. If that was true and he cut Emmitt for that reason, TO would have never became a Cowboy.

I think Emmitt is a poor example. Emmitt's contract was already over. Dallas had to decide whether to keep a running back that had already played for 13 seasons or let him go. Plus Emmitt still wanted to get a big contract. That is a pretty easy decision if you don't consider what Emmitt meant to the Cowboys franchise. Even if Jerry didn't hire Bill, Emmitt still may have been let go.

He made cuts of younger players at times too.

He doesn't let young, promising players go just to prove a point, that's for sure. If he lets them go, they can't play. And they prove that when someone else takes a flier on them.
