4-3 Mock

Just a little mock for a boring Sunday morning. I tried to draft how I think they would, not necessarily what I would want.
Round 1 (4) - Ezekiel Elliot RB Ohio State
With Ramsey and Wentz off the board the only option is Elliot or trade down. Elliot would bring a dynamic weapon to the backfield and immediately bring life back to the offense we've been missing since Murray left.

Round 2 (34) - Jaylon Smith LB Notre Dame
If you want him you have to get him here in the 2nd. Without the knee injury he's the best player in the draft. Cowboys have a history of taking injured LBs in the 2nd round (Lee/ Carter). His talent is worth the redshirt year with the hopes he returns to old form and flies all over the field to make plays. The defense lacks playmaking ability and he has exactly that WHEN HEALTHY.

Round 3 (67) - Braxton Miller WR Ohio State
Cowboys love those Ohio St. boys this year. Coached him in the Senior Bowl and worked him out on other occasions. Love his play making ability out of the slot and can be a weapon in the return game if coached properly. Would be another weapon for the win-now with Romo crew.

Round 4 (101) - Dak Prescott QB Mississippi St.
Cowboys seem to be intrigued by him despite his DWI issues. 4th round is a perfect spot to land a developmental QB to learn behind Romo. Senior Bowl MVP who has some skills to work with.

Round 4 (135) - Jihad Ward DE Illinois
A guy who could go much higher, the Boys get a steal with a DE they coached at the Senior Bowl. Add much needed depth at the DE position for Marinelli's rotation of rush men.

Round 6 (189) - Blake Martinez LB Stanford
Can play inside or outside and help on special teams. Team leader and team captain which makes him a target for the Boys.

Round 6 (212)- DeRunnya Wilson WR Mississippi St
Favorite target of 4th round pick Dak Prescott. Tall and rangy at 6'5" but ran a horribly slow 40 time. Cowboys have seen ton of tape on Prescott and noticed the ability of Wilson despite the slow 40 time. Worth a flier in the 6th round.

Round 6 (216) - Adam Gotsis DT Georgia Tech
Another injured player who would have went higher. More defensive line depth

Round 6 (217) - Deiondre Hall CB/S Northern Iowa
Tall corner who may have to play safety. Played both positions in college and was a ball-hawk with 13 career interceptions. Another guy we coached at the Senior Bowl.

If this is how the dallas draft goes, Jones' better tighten security detail. Dak? Yeah that's what we need another player we can't trust off the field. And 2 guys who are already hurt. Please let's draft guys who are healthy.

You may not want them to, and they probably wont. But the possibility is still there. They like Zeke.

Sure, but by not paying DeMarco and DMac having a decent year, it's pretty clear they believe it's the line rather then the RB.

The defense is upgraded zero in this draft immediately. We have to take a pass rusher. If bosa isn't the pick at 4 they better trade back up in second for Lawson, spence etc

Just thought this thread needed a bump. I first have toot my own horn and take credit for mocking Elliot, Jaylon Smith, and Prescott to the Cowboys about almost a month before the draft. But like all mocks it was just speculation and reading the tea leaves. We spent so much time on Elliot and Prescott that I couldn't see them missing out on those guys. The Jaylon pick was something I wanted. Never thought they would do it. That was a New England or Pittsburgh or Seattle type of pick. A risky but smart pick. Not all risks play out. See Randy Gregory.

But what makes an old thread like this so magical is the comments people made in response to a mock. A speculation. We are all fans and we all just speculate on this board. People sometimes get a little ugly towards the original poster. Or they start to sound so sure of themselves that it puts people off from a great board such as cowboyszone.

Some people were so sure that we would not go RB at #4. Even guaranteeing that we wouldn't draft a running back at #4.

And then reading the comments on Dak Prescott. He was getting killed on this board pre-draft and pre-training camp. We would see comments like, "He's trash" or "He's no better than Tebow". I watched several games and felt like he would be a decent NFL QB. Did I think he would do what he's doing now? Absolutely not. But no reason to completely bash a player that most had never really even see play.

Just a few things to keep in mind in about 6 months when we all start our 2017 Draft stuff. What we want and what the team wants is going to be 2 different things. NONE of us know what Jerry, Stephen, Jason, Will McClay are thinking or how they see a draft prospect. People on this board start to think they KNOW what the team is going to do. Not true for any of us. Lets be a little more open minded about what others think. Thanks again to everyone who makes this an amazing forum to view Dallas Cowboys info. I've been posting or lurking on this site for over 10 years and enjoy every minute of it.

Pretty incredible.
Did you play the draft contest this year? This was a winner.
:yourock:

Ward was loooong gone by the end of the 4th though. But would have nice.

No I didn't even think about getting in the contest this year. Next year i'll have to try my hand in it.

Just visiting this thread again for no particular reason. It's a good thing I don't take delight in rubbing peoples noses in it. :)
I told everyone it was gonna be Zeke and it was Zeke. And it wasn't a lucky guess. I am on record as saying it was always going to be Zeke.

You did a great job on the mock, but then ruined it with this little gem in a different post.

I'm with you on the crappy QB. I'm not a big fan of his but they seem to be.
