4-3 Weakside Defensive End List
Using Ourlads 2014 Draft Guide as the primary resouce...

I'm only listing prospects who seem to have the capability to play
the weakside defensive end spot in a 4-3 defense... some may argue that some of
the prospects listed can't– and that's OK too.

This type of player would or should have the following qualifications:
1. A history in college of being able to get sacks. If they don't have the pedigree as
someone who can sack the QB in college, then they probably aren't someone the
Cowboys should be interested in.
2. Speed over bulk. This player's first responsibility is to rush the QB and not
hold the edge vs the running game. Strength takes a back seat to speed. Agility
figures into this too.

Anyway on to the list:
1. Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina- 6'5" 266lbs 4.53 forty. Top 5 pick.

2. Anthony Barr, UCLA- 6'4" 255lbs 4.59 forty. 1st round.

3. Trent Murphy, Stanford- 6'5" 250lbs 4.85 forty. 1st/2nd round.

4. Dee Ford, Auburn- 6'2" 252lbs 4.56 forty. 1st/2nd round.

5. Jeremiah Attaochu, Georgia Tech- 6'3" 252lbs 4.65 forty. 2nd/3rd round.

6. Marcus Smith, Louisville- 6'3" 261lbs 4.68 forty. 2nd/3rd round.

7. Chris Smith, Arkansas- 6'1" 266lbs 4.71 forty. 2nd/3rd round.

8. Jackson Jeffcoat, Texas- 6'3" 247lbs 4.63 forty. 3rd/4th round.

9.Demarcus Lawrence, Boise State- 6'2" 251lbs 4.82 forty. 3rd/4th round.

10. Trevor Reilly, Utah- 6'4" 247lbs 4.67 forty. 4th/5th round.

11. Cassius Marsh, UCLA- 6'4" 252lbs 4.86 forty. 4th/5th round.

12. James Gayle, Virginia Tech- 6'3" 259lbs 4.68 forty. 4th/5th round.

13. Adrian Hubbard, Alabama- 6'6 257lbs 4.68 forty. 5th/6th round.

14. Larry Webster, Bloomsburg- 6'5" 252lbs 4.58 forty. 5th/6th round.

15. Shaquil Barrett, Colorado State- 6'1" 260lbs 4.75 forty. 6th/7th round

16. Zach Moore, Concordia-St. Paul- 6'5" 269lbs 4.79 forty. 7th round/PFA

17. Chidera Uzo-Diribe, Colorado- 6'2" 252lbs 4.65 forty. 7th round/PFA

18. Kasim Edebali, Boston College- 6'2" 253lbs 4.79 forty. 7th round/PFA

Barrett is interesting. I watched him a lot. Great season for the Rams but I gotta tell you, against UNM, I thought he got handled. In 46 rushing attempts, he registered 1 Solo, 3 Assists. Our QB trucked him. Of course, our QB is 230 lbs but still. I was not all that impressed with him in that game.

Attaochu ran a 4.57, not a 4.65. I think some of these numbers might be off.

Demarcus Lawrence ran a 4.69 at his Pro Day.

A UDFA type is Elhadji Ndiaye. He appears to be super quick/fast but has minimal experience playing football.

When it comes to the 40 times Ourlads seems to err on the side of caution and take numbers that are more conservative. Probably all the prospects listed have posted better times at some point.

I think they might publish their number before some of the Pro Days and are just guessing.

That could be.

I'm not big on using pro-day numbers because that's going to give optimum results. I'm comfortable using the combine results myself.

Not all players have combine numbers.

I understand.

I know the combine track has a reputation for being "slow" deserved or not. But usually comparing the combine number with the pro-day number... Well I think the pro-day number is usually a little better.

It's not necessarily speed over strength but the combination of speed, strength and length. You have to set the edge, play the run and be able to rush the passer. I'm not big on 6'3 250 guys doing this on a full time basis in a base 4-3, however their pass rushing can make up for it, if it's elite speed. Barr is the guy, Ford and Attatochu maybe that guy, but they're probably better off in a 3-4 OLB spot. They may also be used as rotational pass russ specialists.

True 4-3 DE's guys missing from the list with enough speed to play the weak side:

Kareem Martin 6'6 270 4.7 forty 35 inch arms
Aaron Lynch 6'6 260 4.6 forty 34 1/2 inch arms

Yes, that is the common belief. I studied the player that did both in the past. I don't have the exact numbers, but about 2/3rds ran faster at the Pro Day and about 1/3 ran slower. You have to consider that some of the guys that did both were coming off an injury and had about an extra month to recover before the Pro Day. If you take those guys out of the 2/3rds, then it's probably close to 50/50.

Fair enough.

But I think Lawrence's combine time is probably more indicative of his speed... It's like this, I think the guy is a good prospect, but I think he's more quick than he is fast.

Jeffcoat is Horrible. Jeffcoat is horrible to the tune of 82 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, 4 pass broken up, 2 forced fumbles, and 15 QB hurries in a tough conference that featured Oklahoma, Baylor, and Oklahoma State. This all on a team that finished 67th in total defense and fired their defensive coordinator in the middle of the season. Yet Jeffcoat continued to produce.

Lawrence is really difficult to evaluate. He's consistently a better rusher in college than some of the quicker/faster guys, but regardless of Pro Day or Combine, it's obvious in game footage that he does not have elite speed/quickness; however, neither did guys like Terrell Suggs (4.84 forty).

It's interesting that he has super big hands (11") because he is really good at fighting off blocks which is an issue for guys like Barr and Attouchu.

I was gonna say he reminds me of a poor-mans Terrell Suggs.

I wouldn't have a problem with the Cowboys drafting the kid... Just not in the 1st round! LOL!
