I disagree. As much as we appear to overvalue both Randle and Dunbar, I just do not see it.

They sure didn't get the rock much for guys we overvalue. For our style of play I think they are both #3's. I think the staff would feel much more comfortable taking some of Murray's work load away if they had a physical back that could do the same thing he does in terms of pounding it inside and getting dirty yards.

Marinelli feels like Jimmy Johnson in that pass rushers are the ones you draft high, not the run stoppers

so why did JJ draft Russell Maryland 1st rd ?

had 15 in 5 years ?

they only pass rusher JJ had was Haley

They drafted Russell Maryland because they got caught with their pants down after trading up for the first overall pick and Raghib Ismail went to the CFL. Once Ismail went North, they were stuck with that pick and Russell was the only one they had any use for, and Jimmy had coached him in college and he was a known quality.

Besides, Maryland was 6-1 305. Not a big DT like we're talking about. He had quickness even if he wasn't a great pass rusher, as you said. People said for years that he wasn't worth the top pick and that Jimmy and Jerry had messed up by trading for first overall when they weren't sure Ismail would be there. They said that because Maryland wasn't a pass rusher and didn't impact the game enough as a run stopper.

Booger and Maryland were no pass rushers.

They weren't. That's why they were taken to be the 1-tech. They had better anchor than a pass rushing DT. However, even when looking for a 1-tech, both Johnson and Marinelli looked for a 1-tech that was still around 300 pounds... not a 320-330 pound lane clogger. Both still had some quickness and wouldn't tire as often.

Anyway, we shall see. I'm not saying I know for sure...I'm just saying that I don't think they'll want a 1-tech in round 1.

They did not get the ball because a run game as a foundation relies on rhythm. You cannot get that switching out backs constantly.

Just look at the teams that have done it. They have a bell cow.

Seattle has Lynch. Houston has Foster. You might see a Turbin or last season a Tate get a few carries, but since when has a platoon worked?

Look at SF last year. They kept switching back and forth between Gore and Hyde and never could get on track.

If Dallas wants to keep the running game as the driving force behind their offensive tempo, the RB they have will and should get the majority of the carries.

I just hope they do not think Randle is that back.

A lot depends on what happens with Murray. He returns, do not expect another back. If he does leave, then you might see something develop.

No to Brown, he isn't a Marinelli type player in the early rounds

don't know how any one could guess that

Texas' Malcom Brown

http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***...ile-what-i-see-in-malcom-brown-dt-texas.html/

What I liked: Anytime we dig into a player at this position, I am looking for his overall versatility. For instance, is he very good against the run at plugging or is he a penetrating player who is making plays behind the line of scrimmage? Is he a pass rusher or is he a roadblock? Well, if you are going to take a DT in Round 1, he better be able to do both, and I am confident that Brown is that type of guy. He appears to be the 3-technique, although Texas sure had its share of 3-4 (Oklahoma State) where he was almost the 5-technique. But, in his true spot, he is playing outside shoulder on a guard and he is more than a handful for anyone across from him. He stands, sheds, and makes the tackle on a regular basis. He 2-gaps the run, where he can wait, peek, and still swat the guard off to get to the ball carrier. But, his real value is that he is quick off the snap and through a gap with great quickness and lots of plays in the backfield. You absolutely have to love a player who is behind the line of scrimmage this much and although he can get better, the resume already is productive. He overpowers players with his bullrush and his strong swat, as well, and split a guard and tackle on a stunt against Oklahoma State that was very rare for a man of that size.

I'd sure take him

I don't see 3tech when watching game footage of Brown. He has a quick 1st step for a big guy, but not that much quickness after the 1st step. He overpowers a lot of guys at the college level. If they were going to take a 1tech in the 1st then he might be a Marinelli type 1tech. Another 320+ guy, Carl Davis looks quicker to me.
