That blows my mind that Mackenzie Bezos has ended up with 40 billion dollars for getting divorced. Most of us who get divorced just end up with heartache and a pain in the butt situation. But 40 billion, sheesh, that's a lot. And here I was going to offer her $299/USD for an hour of "companionship" J/K.

I thought it was 36. Not that 4 less hurts. I believe there are conditions attached, like not being able to sell certain stocks until a certain time passes etc. They were saying Jeff was worth a total of 160, so she got 25%. I think the conditions were put in place so she can’t crash Amazon.

Man, there are people who live in a different world than we do. I guess they can afford a yacht if they want one.

When you’re talking about that kind of cash. Perhaps she just felt like it wasn’t worth a drawn out legal battle? Like ok you’re gonna give me 36 billion?

Maybe she just felt why bother fighting for the additional 4 when u don’t need it.

I was being a bit facetious given the OP. :p That said, money is completely relative to the individual--man or woman--seeking it.

I have read Tiger Woods' net worth being in the $1.5 billion dollar range. Late last year, BlackEnterprise.Com listed his net worth at $760 million.

Woods' actual worth is likely in-between the two. Elin Nordegren settled for $750 million.

Just pure speculation but I would bet Nordegren would have sought more if she had been in MacKenzie Bezo's shoes. Singling out Nordegren does not make her an example of a norm but it does establish different people have different expectations.

Amazon was started in her basement. Not his. She should have taken HALF! :D

She already sold $400M in stock. (she need some cash to live on! lol) Anyhow, if she were to sell it. It would likely be a volume buyer and not sold on the open market.

When you become that rich its hard for anyone to track down all of your assets. So her lawyers probably just gave up, figuring they'd found enough.

I'm not out to tell her what to do. I'm just amazed at the lives of the super rich. Billionaire problems are nothing like mine. Can you imagine deciding whether to take 36 billion, 40 billion, or whatever half of his estate is. Sheesh. It's a little different than deciding to order from Taco Bell's dollar menu to save money.

She was a major part of the company.
The original online bookstore idea was heavily borrowed from her (She is a writer) and she was the original unpaid accountant.

She wasn't a trophy wife he had to pay off to go away.
She was employee number 2 and a Yale grad who worked with him at their cush Manhattan firm before packing up for Texas then Seattle and going into business at Amazon.

I'm not knocking it. That mount of money just blows my mind. I'd bet she doesn't need to order from the dollar menu at Taco Bell.

No doubt. She wasn't even greedy.
It is a very different thing when someone like Tiger's wife gets half....
Tiger was flat irresponsible to not have had a pre-nup.
He can never earn like that again either.

Bezos didn't because he didn't have any real money when they married lol.

Shoot shoulda held out for more. That explains why he didn't get as ugly as most billionaires do when they "move on". She earned her money, so asking for only a 1/4 was generous on her part.

Yeah, but I will say this. Your problems are much more simple. When you have that kind of cash, you tend to have much bigger problems and the stress that goes long with it that you have to deal with. While money solves a lot of issues simple issues, it creates bigger issues.

The best way to solve big money type issues is to become a hermit and that is only if that is even possible. Most people require social interaction or things to do outside the house. That's where the problems come from.

If you think about it. On the polar opposite end of the spectrum. If you don't have money, but you spend like you do. (going mega deep in debt ($50k+) You end up with major issues because of the money you were spending. Not because you were (relatively?) poor.

The point being, money tends to create more problems than it solves.

Agreed. It doesn't take too much intelligence to understand that $40B is more than she will ever spend and asking for more isn't worth the fight to get more than more (sounds redundant right?) than she will ever spend.

Take the more money than you could ever spend and start your new life. That's what I would have done.

It's a really whacky way to do things.
I understand couples that have been together supposedly help each other out in may way--or they should.
Seems that there would be a cap.

I have a friend who busted his butt his whole life and became really successful. Later got married and stayed married 10 years. The woman he married slept around on him and did very little in regard to household-related stuff. Had zero to do with his success and if anything soaked up a lot of his net worth through irresponsible spending.
She still got half of everything when they finally split.

This situation is different in that she was an active part of the company.

Although this is a bit different, the asset splits from some divorces seem so bizarre.
The ones where the earner accumulated wealth based on things that had very little to do with his or her spouse, for example.
Supreme athletes for example. It may affect the some, but in general, who they marry will not vastly improve their jump shot or golf swing....at least not normally. In fact, if the marriage is bad it could even have an adverse effect.

You're right. If I were super rich, I would much rather have no one at all know, not even my family.
