“Obviously we took our shot and it didn’t work out. That’s on us with that. I’m not going to say anything is a ‘failure.’ That would be too much of a negative towards Trey."

Ummmm... pardon the observation... but if it is, indeed, "on us with that"... how pray tell do you say in the very next words coming out of your mouth (!)... "I'm not going to say anything is a failure (because) that would be too much of a negative toward Trey."

Coherence. Get some, Coach.

It kinda does.
If you say so. I see where Shanahan says that Brock as cemented as the starter if healthy and that he was more comfortable with Darnold as camp moved forward. That extrapolation was all you.

Darnold has 1000 NFL attempts and Lance is still raw with them in win now mode is what I took from that. They said they wanted to keep him too but he wanted to go somewhere he had a shot at number 2.

Not as much pressure on him here. Unless he somehow ends up starting. If that happens he will have more pressure on his shoulders than ever. The star comes with a price. Especially for the most important position.

The 49ers gave up way too much for a player that had just 19 games of experience at North Dakota State. I know some people will say Brock Purdy took advantage of his limited reps better than Lance. While that is true, Purdy also played a lot more in college and at a higher level of competition.

Lance was not ready for the NFL when he came in as a raw 21 year old third overall pick. Every time he stepped onto the field I think he felt the weight of unrealistic expectations. Now he comes to a team with an established starter with zero pressure to play and zero pressure to answer critics about where he was drafted.

The arm strength, athleticism, and character the 49ers fell in love with are still there. Lance is still just 23. Let's give him time to learn the system, time to recover from his injuries, and time to get a mental reset. He couldn't get any of that in San Fran while fighting for his job. Here he knows his role and here he can relax.

Maybe the Cowboys strike gold. Maybe they get a nice backup. Maybe Lance is in the USFL in two years. We just have to wait and see.
Kudos on what is IMO a very thoughtful, well reasoned, and balanced post.

You do realize you are posting on CowboysZone, right?

Trey needs reps and teaching. Lance didn't play much college football at a lower level, so an increase in competition and a lack of experience always meant a slow learning curve imo. Watching Dak will do wonders for QB3. Also, practicing vs the best defense in the NFL will help too.

I like the move for us
Low risk and VERY high reward potentially
We burned a 4th rd pick on a 3rd string QB who was a liability on the field and was told he was probably not going to get anymore playing time once the preseason ended.

Purdy played last season at an important time and already proved himself. Lance wasn't available then, from what I understand. Darnold was a high draft pick and has tons more experience. The 49ers needed an experienced backup given the recent troubles with keeping their QBs healthy. I see it from their standpoint. And they likely didn't want Lance sitting another season as it could have killed his career in the NFL. He needs reps, but I am not sure the Cowboys will have enough to give to him either unless there is an injury or two.
