I just can't stop thinking we should have gone for it in the first quarter. We were moving it constantly on them, were deep and a first down would have been huge.

Romo looked like he wanted to go for it but we didn't. Missed the FG and the rest is history.

this wasn't the Eagles that beat one team with a winning record.

This call was pretty stunning at the time. I could kinda understand if we had a clutch kicker, but Suisham ??? I go for the conversion, even if you fail the field position is better then missing a FG.

I think I'm in the minority, but I didn't mind not going for it. We have struggled for a while in short-yardage situations, and it took a pitch to Austin of all things to pick up third and short earlier in this game. I had no confidence running Barber into the thick of the Williams Wall in that situation.

With that said, I also had no confidence with Suisham trying about a 50-yarder. So maybe the lesser of two evils in that situation is to just go for it.

Hmm, I guess I agree with your point in a round about way. Ha.

This is a fine example of NFL "playing it by the book" coaching, even though the book is antiquated and stupid. Sports is litered with these example.

I would think just in regard to playing by percentages, the percentages are higher making a 4th and 1 vs. making a 50 yard kick. Plus you're penalized for missing the kick by going from the spot of the hold. Plus the reward is much higher for going for it. There is really no logical reason for not going for it.

Well, here's the thing...

Suisham probably had at least 50% chance of hitting that FG. On his career, he's hit 75% between 40-49. He was 6-6 this year from that range.

Over the course of the season, we converted on 4th down 36.4% of the time. League average looks pretty close to 50%.

So, if the odds of us getting points are equal to or greater than the odds of us continuing the drive, then I think you can make a pretty strong argument that the FG was the right choice.

It was a gutless call. Especially since we only went for 4th down situations after the game was at hand.

I agree CCF, but, I wonder if Dallas being snake bit on short yard 4th and 1s in the past played into the decision to kick?

Personally, I wish they would have gone for it, especially since I don't really trust our kicker, but if they do go for it, and come up short, then we would all be ****** that they didn't try for the 3.

To make that call...

You have to have these...

Not these...

You go for it in that situation. If you don't make the first down you give the Vikings worse field position than if you miss the field goal.

If I didn't have confidence in making a first down I would have punted the ball before trusting a shaky kicker.Either pin them inside the ten or get a touchback that would put them at the 20 instead of out past the thirty.

That was just a terrible terrible decision.

My wife commented 'will they go for it?' and i replied 'you're damn right we are' and got out of my seat to get ready for the play.

I was amazed, absolutely amazed, that Phillips decided to try a field goal.

What was he thinking??

To start the second half as well to try another one, good Lord. Perhaps try to pin them deep rather than attempt another long field goal.

Darn it. Terrible game management.

That first one, man, that is not the way winners think.

It was a low risk chance to grab Big MO early in the game.......if we make it and go on to score we got MO

if we didnt make the 1st......were still in same position as a missed FG or better

Instead Minny grabs MO with the ball over Sensebaugh........

Somebody would have to do some digging to find out, but I could swear that, since Wade's been here, we've gone for it in that situation more often than not.

I was shocked that we didn't go for it like we usually do, especially with an unproven kicker.

I gotta say we lose the game anyway.

I don't think it was that bad of a call. You want to try to come away with some points. It was a risk with Suisham for sure but he's nailed 48 yarders before and if he's been kicking good in practice it may not have been unreasonable to give him a shot. One thing's for sure, if you go for it and don't make it then everybody says you should have kicked the field goal. You take the heat for either call if you're not successful.

The second FG attempt definitely should've been a punt instead.

Would Belichick have gone for it?

There's your correct answer folks.

Hey MW... :)

Now I have to listen to all this NY garbage because the Jets won...uh, and Rex Ryan went for it on 4th at the end. Kill shot. Go for the win.

Oh and to add to your question....would Jimmy Johnson have gone for it?

There's your second correct answer.

On the nosey John.

The term "gutless" is overused on this forum, but I think it applies in this case.

Awful, awful call.
