5 NFL rookies falling short of early expectation

we knew a late first round rookie starting at LT was going to struggle before the season. We should have let him start at RT (the position he played in college) to get used to the NFL speed first, but I guess we didn't want to bench Steele who just signed a big contact last season.
IMO if Smith were to show vast improvement at LT, say if Guyton misses this week, then I think they should be open minded about his future at LT and Guyton at RT.
Steele definitely isn't worth his contract IMO.

I believe the were 18 first round grades in the draft last year. He was picked 29. Dont know if the Cowboys had a 1st round grade on him or not. Regardless he was drafted on his traits since he never played the position in school. You could see on his senior bowl practice tapes that he wasnt close to a finished product. For me he is right where I thought he would be at this point: a work in progress.

I agree with Mosher on this......perhaps we are expecting too much cuz of Tyler's success and he's trying to fill Tyron Smith's shoes.

If early expectation was that a late-round rookie switching from RT and LT who wasn't drafted earlier because he needed some technique work was going to step in for Tyron and not struggle, then yeah, we were expecting too much. What we should have expected was to see some signs that he can become a quality starting LT but plenty of mistakes in getting there, which is what we're getting.

Guyton would be a disappointment if he was the 5th overall pick, the best O-lineman available.

As a "raw project" he shouldn't even be starting until halfway through the season.

Those expecting guyton to be good out the gate are crazy. Better give the kid a couple years. What they should do is cut Steele, save some money but more importantly put Gyuton on the right side so he can become the monster he showed in college. Then either draft a stinking LT or keep smith at tackle and draft a LG.

More media spin for clicks. Guyton was projected as a project and now that he's been immediately thrown in as a starter against a slew of pro-bowl DEs they're going to say he's underperforming against expectations?! Please.
I agree. Absolutely ridiculous. I like what he's doing and the potential he has. **** the media.

Yeah, Guyton will be fine. He was always going to need reps to adjust to the NFL and the left side.
Will take a few games.

he wasn’t All Conf or All American like CooperBB.

only red flag I saw in the draft.

Hes gonna be fine. This is stupid. The only other two I'm familiar with on the list have both been injured. I personally didn't expect Guyton to come in and play like a pro bowler from day one. My hope was he'd progress as the year went on and our run blocking would improve.

I disagree with the tone of this thread. He looks terrible and has been a huge problem. The minute he went out the line started playing better.

Does that mean he will continue to be terrible? Is he definitely a bust? Absolutely not. His career could go many ways but let's not sugar coat it here. Would Asim Richards (a 4th round pick from last year) been worse so far? I think not.

Some guys come in and play well right away
Some guys take some time to adjust and then do well
Some guys never get it

Guyton may be in group 2 or 3 but he definitely isn't in group 1.

we have been spoiled a lot with our top OL picks. Tyron was very good right away and became excellent soon
Zach was all pro his rookie year
TFred was great right out of the box
Tyler Smith was the first one for a while that was not great but his potential was clearly there and then he was All Pro at Guard
Guyton is the victim of unrealistic expectations

Only way to improve in season is to play

Week to week its game prep, backups dont get enough reps to ingrain technique.

Coaches by now know his mental makeup and what he is made of....

Are his sacks because of a long held ball, just plain beat, missed chip....

trusting our coaches on the OL when things are not going well is hard due to the memories of Chaz Green and company

Many projections about the future of Tyler Guyton were that he'd be subjected to early problems in pass protection. It's happening! :omg:

Guyton also didn't have Tyron Smith to benefit from. I'll give him time but it will be interesting if we can find out LT replacement post T.Smith.

I disagree with the tone here for a different reason. Before the season started everyone was saying how much of a home run pick he was. And when he stymied Micah Parsons in training camp (with Parsons going about 75% of himself) the "Oh lawds!" hit the roof. Now everyone is dialing it back after the pads are on for real and he hasn't lived up to their hype. Now it's "he just needs time," yadda yadda yadda which is fair now that he has an actual track record but that wasn't the tone early.

Against the Lions giving Guyton the day off with Smith at Tackle didn’t exactly break the bank . With the bye and SF coming up at 3-3 go back to original plan . Get Guyton back in at tackle and continue playing your # 1 pick .
