come up with five things you like about the defense and I'll be impressed

heh heh...I'll give it a go.

1. Depth at DT. I like Crawford, Thornton, and McClain a lot and I think Collins will mature in time as well. No more Hayden :)

2. Byron Jones at FS. Kid is possibly the best athlete we have ever had at that position-- certainly at least since Woody retired.

3. Sean Lee at WLB. He had a tremendous year last year, and when he is on the field he not only makes big plays-- he elevates the play of his teammates.

4. Scandrick's return. O-Scan is a tough, dependable, leader on D-- but he's also one of the best slot DBs in the game.

5. Marinelli. I like him as a coach and he gets more from his talent than almost anyone else in the league. This is his 3rd year with Dallas and I think continuity counts for something. I'm looking forward to what he can bring out from his unit-- especially if the offense can dominate the TOP and the D can play with the lead ala 2014.

I think they need to open up that playbook and let Dak attack. He says he's the smartest QB in the class so now is the time to put it to test.

This. They have receiving weapons and a solid o-line. Trust in the kid and let him make plays. Challenge the defense.

I know this goes against Garrett's philosophy but his job is hanging by a thread; there is no holding back now.

Don't forget Lawrence. He can/could be a force when/if he returns.

Agreed. I like him as well. The guy had 8 sacks in 9 games last year and ended on a strong run. However-- he is in the dog house a bit right now for me. His suspension hurts the most in my opinion b/c no one expected it from him.

To his credit he has taken responsibility for his actions and apologized. I will let bygones be bygones once he registers his first sack

I would add something new we saw in Preseeason that I hope carries over into the season. He made deep throws to TWill and Butler that we haven't seen from our offense in a long time. The throw to the corner of the end zone to TWill was a double move from TWill, which we haven't seen in the past. The throw was perfect. The deep balls to Butler were excellent also.

The last few years Dez, Witten and Beasley played very well but we didn't have a true deep threat. If TWill and Butler give us that in 2016, its a huge plus.

I've seen TWill run sluggos before. He just didn't get a lot of separation on them. He is just doing better out of his breaks this season. Dez only started running them 2 years ago. He is the one that I am excited to see this year. I think he is going to absolutely explode now that he knows how to move around.

I thought TWill had a huge opportunity last year with Dez out and had a chance to break out, but took a big step backwards instead. He should be improved just by having Dez back but he could explode like you say if he can finally execute double moves and crisper route running.

And the fact this is a walk year in his contract should be extra motivation. I definitely think deep balls to him and Butler are going to be a bigger part of the offense no matter which NSQB (Non-Sanchez Quarterback) is throwing to him.

I meant Dez was going to explode. TWill will have his best season but he won't 'explode' I don't think.

1. We have great versatility in our run game.

Meaning, we can run the ball on outside zone and inside zone plays with both EE and Morris. We were confined to inside zone runs with DMC (who did run them very well). We can also run the ball to the left with Tyron and Collins or to the right with Zack and Free. This is what we had in 2014 that was so valuable and why Murray broke the NFL record of most 100 yard rushing performances in a row to start a season.

We also have both EE and Morris so we can keep them fresh. The historical data on 2 RB systems show that you want to use the faster runner more in the 2nd half over the bruising runner. Hopefully Garrett and company are aware of that. Obviously, EE isn't a scat-back, but he's got much more speed than Morris.

2. We can finally run the ball effective out of the shotgun

At least with EE we can. It also helps that Dak has legit running ability as well. EE has the speed to get more east and west and then turn up field which, IMO, is what is needed to run effectively out of the shotgun. I don't believe the read option is flawless as those moronic Skins fans tried to tell us years ago, but I do believe it is still a viable offense in the NFL that can...if done at the right time with the right personnel...can make the opposing defenses' job harder and the QB's job easier. With the RPO and EE's ability to run out of the shotgun effectively since that is what he did in college, it just makes our run game even more versatile.

3. The screen passing game

I believe we'll be much improved with the screen passes under Dak, if not a really darn good screen passing game. This means a lot of easy plays where we gain valuable yardage and making the opponent a bit gun shy about blitzing.

4. The mismatches our wide receivers cause.

Dez is just a world class athlete that causes mismatches for any team. Beasley is a matchup problem in the slot for teams. I'm not overly nutty about T-Will, but I don't hate the player either. I think he's a player that tends to fair well against the majority of #2 CB's and almost all #3 CB's. And Butler I think has the ability and speed to also eat up a lot of #2 CB's and almost all #3 CB's.

Over the years we've seen teams put their #2 CB and a safety to cover Dez and then their #1 CB on T-Will. I think if Butler looks as good as he did in preseason (and can stay healthy), this may disturb what the opposing D-Coordinators may try to do. And with the run game and Beasley underneath, we could eat up defenses rather efficiently.

5. Short yardage and goal line offense

Much more versatility in the run game instead of being restricted to inside zone runs. I think EE will be a good short yardage runner and Morris has always been a quality short yardage back. We also have Dak who can not only run, but should be a better option on QB sneaks. And I also like how well Dak was throwing the fades and back shoulder throws.

What do you hate about this offense? When it's 3rd and 10 and they throw a 4 yard pass. UGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH.

I think teams run too many screens and draws on 3rd and long in general.

I don't like how this team doesn't care for hot reads. But with Dak in there, I think they'll with more hot reads. I also don't like how they use Dez. I have no problem with, in general, trying to line up at the X-receiver and seeing what he can do. But, they need to have more 'just in case' plays for Dez in case an opposing corner is having a good day against Dez or the defense is guessing right (or cheating like the Patriots :)) and get him into the slot and possibly getting a game breaking play.

I would also like to see more trick plays. I'm a fan of the flea flicker, but I also think there's something we can do where Dez gets the ball on a reverse and throws the pass. He's got a cannon for an arm and he's left handed which throws people off.

I also don't want the team to go back to running the ball 75% of the time on first down.
