1. Preston Smith:
Why do I love Preston Smith at the end of round one? Because he can “win” in many different ways on the field and comes from a school that consistently produces good defensive lineman. At the left defensive end position, he’s a premier run defender who has size and length to set the edge on early downs. But his best value comes on passing downs when he can kick inside and win at defensive tackle. Smith’s best football is ahead of him and is the right-kind-of-guy for the Dallas Cowboys. Probably will never be a double digit sack guy, but he will be productive and will make your defense better. Think Pernell McPhee from the Ravens when you project Preston Smith to the NFL. I really like the combination of Demarcus Lawrence and Preston Smith on the edges for years to come.
2. Stevie Nelson
With Orlando Scandrick being the only sure thing on the Cowboys’ depth chart, the team desperately needs a shot in the arm in the secondary. Insert Stevie Nelson from Oregon State. Some may call this a slight reach, but Nelson is one of my favorite corners in the draft. Playing with a boulder-size chip on his shoulder, Nelson plays bigger than his size and will battle receivers all game long. With the Cowboys coveting aggressiveness and play-makers in the secondary, look for Nelson to get a lot of consideration by the team after the first round.
