It’s going to be a problem. Not costing us games now but it’s making them much harder than they have to be. Won’t fly against playoff teams.

And McCarthy made some HUGE promises in offseason that penalties would be cleaned up this season.

And MM deserves to be held accountable. I haven't heard any player really address it though. If they are serious about being contenders, why aren't the players making an effort to police themselves? Peer pressure is a powerful tool.

I'm thinking a few really bad games penalty-wise (like yesterday) inflated this number since I don't think penalties have been has big a problem this year.

Of course it's so expected after every big play yesterday I waited a few seconds to make sure the yellow "FLAG" marker didn't show up at the bottom of the screen too.

This is the second Thanksgiving in a row where the referees have thrown over a dozen flags on us.

What angered me was they would throw a flag and take forever discussing it. So for 12 penalties, the majority of those penalties resulted in a long discussion beforehand.

I don't know why the NFL thinks it's a good idea to give so much power to referees and to have them call games so tightly, especially for one side.

I mean,
Sometimes my gut feeling goes away but then a big play on offense or a third down stop on defense occurs and I just automatically look for a flag.
It shouldn't be that way but I'm almost conditioned to it now.
The pre-snap ones on both sides of the ball are an unfortunate reality of who this team is.
They don't seem to go away regardless.

Coaching matters.

We have the most in the league? It’s weird because it feels like, on the whole, the Cowboys have played more disciplined than in years past.

This team would nearly be unstoppable if they even cut it down by 2-3 penalties per game.
We have a bet 13 deficit
13 more on us than our opponent
It does seem like we cut them down because I think we’ve had less that’s actually hurt us
Yesterday was crazy amount but we over came most of them
Certainly something that needs fixing but I don’t see it getting fixed this late in the year

That’s ridiculous. Doubt it will be fixed this year. Doubt Mike is the guy to fix the issues…

I think we all look for a flag after a big play on offense or defense.

A lot of these big plays are called back because of holding and there's not a whole lot you can do about that. Sometimes your guys are just going to get beat. It seems like they really study us closely though and a lot of these flags come out at the worst times. Sometimes they come out a few seconds after the play.

These pre snap penalties can be fixed. There's no excuse for false start on offense. That's a lack of concentration and that can be fixed absolutely. No doubt in my mind.

...I know, its weird and still we carry winning record. MM has to get everyone to clean up some areas.

Remember, WC last year?. Penalties killed us.
It’s a testament to Dak and Moore for continuing to move the #1 offense and overcome these penalties.

This was a huge problem last year, and they are reverting back to some bad habits. Lack of discipline and focus.

Watkins with back to back games with holding as a DL?! SMH

Lamb is getting far too many false start/illegal shift penalties. Yet another offsides on defense again lol… Thankfully the DPI and roughing calls are down, but it would be a huge improvement if we could just eliminate the pre snap mistakes lol

If a team ---Cowboys--- committed the most penalties and was assessed the most yardage for those infractions in a regular season + playoffs = 18 games for 2021-22;

And that same team ---Cowboys---- two-thirds into the following season = 11 games for 2022-23...are tied for 1st in number of infractions committed, and 3rd in yardage assessed (4 more yds - they would be 2nd; 70 more yds - Dallas would be 1st).

It is not 'a few really bad games penalty-wise'.
The Dallas Cowboys have a serious problem -consistently committing penalties --- by each squad (offense, defense, special teams)-- game to game, week to week, home or away, no matter the opponent --in 2022, just like they did in 2021.
They have shown no committment \ concentrated and focused mindset-effort to improve.

As opposed to the Las Vegas Raiders, who in 2021 was 2nd to the Cowboys in both number of penalties and yardage aasessed.
So far in 2022, that team is tied for 7th in penalties accrued and tied for 10th in yardage assessed.
Yes - the Raiders are bad this season - but they have at least one positive in that the players appear to have become more disciplined with committing less penalties.

not that it matters because league worst is terrible, but i wonder what the breakdown is. obviously tyler has his disproportionate share. seems like we've had quite a few blocks in the back, and a handful of taunting/unsportsmanlike conduct

Both of these things can be true. they obviously have a terrible habit of getting penalized, and this season they could have come in bunches. I know around week 6 or 7 the penalties were middle of the pack.

Outstanding post.

To add:
The offseason claims by the Head Coach were that penalties would be top priority.
Then He would be more involved in the offense.
Then, we will run the ball.
A case can be made on how consistently any of these off season goals have been aacomplished.
But ultimately, at least the lack of consistency is consistent, lol.

Not sure what the breakdown is, but i would guess a lot of them are on the OL....unprovoked penalties. With holding to a lesser extent. But they will kill you in the playoffs.

I'm not defending it but we're one of only 6 teams who have played 11 games while everyone else has played 10. Still too many penalties.

I agree. This is our Achilles heel. Actually pretty sad they haven't been able to address this problem in two years.

It has a lot to do with who's coaching, and his personality. I guarantee you when you've got more of an alpha coach like JJ or BP, our penalty numbers were down compared to the league average. I suppose I should look that up, but in this case I don't think it's just anecdotal.

Then when you have more of a beta coach (MM, Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett), well, the demand for attention to detail -- and consequences for not following through, and/or with self-inflicted mistakes or unforced errors such as penalties -- is just not there. That's the bottom line...it is what it is.
