Penalties are so random. I have seen our defensive line held throughout games and no calls. I have seen certain teams just throw the ball deep and get phantom pass interference calls. The Cowboys earned those penalties last game though plus it is a prime time game that the Fox wanted to keep close. CeeDee and Gallup got mugged a few times with no call.

It has a lot to do with who's coaching, and his personality. I guarantee you when you've got more of an alpha coach like JJ or BP, our penalty numbers were down compared to the league average. I suppose I should look that up, but in this case I don't think it's just anecdotal.

Then when you have more of a beta coach (MM, Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett), well, the demand for attention to detail -- and consequences for not following through, and/or with self-inflicted mistakes or unforced errors such as penalties -- is just not there. That's the bottom line...it is what it is.

Great post.

This will be why we falter in the playoffs. It's already tough enough to beat your opponent but too much to overcome if you keep stalling out your own drives.

We have the most in the league? It’s weird because it feels like, on the whole, the Cowboys have played more disciplined than in years past.

This team would nearly be unstoppable if they even cut it down by 2-3 penalties per game.

Very true. I might add that if the refs called a straight up game, that 2-3 merging you mentioned would take care of itself. However, there is no excusing the pre snap penalties

the raiders went through roughly 10 different head coaches, and 100s of new and different players over a couple decade span, but the perceived sins of Al Davis against the NFL continued to make them lead the league in penalties no matter who coached them…..unless it’s all a big coincidence
