this isnt worth anyone spending too much time on but if someone could give me some insight i would appreciate it.

firstly, I am not from the US and didnt grow up with the game but enjoy it and learning slowly about it....but i am very much a student and have large gaps in my education.

anyway, i hear of people talking about drafting a QB (or indeed any other position) late and developing him.

how does this work? I know we have an example in Romo (undrafted) but it seems strange to me that a guy who isnt ostensibly talented enough to be drafted high for maybe the key role in the team can then be developed into becoming that guy....

does this make sense? i mean does the talent just develop? isnt there somethingthat a late round choice can never hope to have compared with a top draft pick?

thanks.......

In a nutshell, almost all the qbs that play division 1 college football have the physical talents to play qb in the nfl, not all but most.

THe difference is, in the nfl the defenses are incredibly different.

The mental adjustment that college qbs have to go through to learn and play the nfl game is immense. Most qbs who even play dont get it for a year or three.

IN romo's case he had everything going for him. A guy who believed in him and got him aboard (sean Payton) a coach who had no interest in playing him anytime soon (Bill Parcells) A young guy who made all the mistakes he could learn from (quincy carter) and two good veterans to learn behind in testaverde and bledsoe.

The developmental part is learning the teams offense, how it operates in every situation, how to handle the offense against the various defenses in the nfl, how to read coverages and then of course how to manage the game.

Romo was in the same offense for four years, so it was just a matter of learning it and applying when he had the opportunity. Alot of young qbs like david carr go through multiple coaches because they are on bad teams and get drafted high. They then have to learn new offensive playbooks, new personnel, new coaching styles..etc.

It takes time. its all mental. Most guys have the physical ability, but not the mental ability to translate it to the field on gameday. Think ryan leaf.

Hope this helps. This is a dumb down quickie version, but its a start.

Oh and we definitely need a young developmental quarterback on this roster, hopefully trent edwards will still be around in third..

It can be done. Joe Montana was drafted in the 3rd round. Tom Brady in the 6th. As you mentioned, Romo went undrafted. Just shows you how much of a crap shoot the draft is. Especially at QB.

Sometimes it just takes a while for talent to mature. There are so many high schools in America, and sometimes talent slips through the cracks.

This happened to Romo. He was a good soccer and basketball player in HS. He didn't play football until his JR year, IIRC. He got overlooked as far as football was concerned, so he played at a smaller school.

Naturally, players from smaller schools are overlooked to an extent with NFL scouts Romo had a good college career, but seeing that he played against inferior competition, NFL scouts were wary.

good stuff

it's not about where you came from, it's how you are coached and how you respond to coaching
