Though nobody may care, I'll write it out anyway. As a student in Boston, there are no cowboy fans around to discuss opinions and it's almost as frustrating as our offensive woes.
Well, I'll start with Romo's play. He did not have his best game against the Bears today. Almost 400 yards, 2 picks, and a TD. I have no official stat to prove my next observation, but I'll go out on a limb and say it. If TR has more than 3 seconds to read the defense and throw the ball (whether on the run or in a pocket), he completes passes. He completes short passes and long passes, back shoulder passes, fades, over the shoulder, and inbetween defenders. If he's not on the floor or throwing a quick route, he can make every throw required of a champion QB.
How do you get a QB like Romo time? Either form a wall around him, which we are apparently uncapable of, or move the QB and make the opposing team pay for blitzing with screens. What I want to know, is with the plethora of weapons on this offense and a shorter, more mobile QB capable of almost everythrow in the book, why we don't run a more boot-leg, almost Shanahan style offensive scheme. Not only will this play to Romo's strength, by moving him laterally across the field, but this also plays to the strength of Jones who on a boot-leg like handoff could easily find a seam for a huge gain.
We have big mobile blockers, Bennett, Witten, Free, Williams, Austin.
We have an agile QB capable of throwing on the run. Why make him stand in the pocket Tom Brady style for 95% of his throws, when he's obviously better suited to play like Elway or Young.
As for our defense, our MLB's are worse than pedestrian in pass coverage. They are god-awful. Not only can Brooking and James not pass cover, they can't pass-blitz either. Don't get me wrong, they can stop the run, but we need to groom or start allowing other MLB prospects test their hands at roaming the middle. A MLB that could hold his own in an island zone in the middle would stop alot of the quick routes that QB's try with Spencer and Ware in their faces.
Also, I dont know how I feel about Ball at FS. The only play I've seen him make in two regular season games was hit a reciever after the play was over, almost drawing a PI call. If we're going to be blitzing LB's from all over the field. The FS position is absolutely CRUCIAL. Infact, possibly the most important position on the defense.
Haha, I have a lot more to say, but I'd rather watch Manning tear **** up as I have him in my FF league.
Bottom-line, we need to change something in our offensive scheme, and IMMEDIATELY.
