A few things I noticed after looking at the tape

Cowboys vs Panthers

When I go back and look at the games I like to look at the things we did wrong and give some of my thoughts on how we can correct these mistakes.

Fortunately this past week we didn't have nearly as much as the week before so I don't have as much to break down.

Defense

Carolina came out running a lot of short passes in the 1st half. They did things to try and get their receivers the ball quick and force our DB's to make Tackles.

Our Corners have to get better at tackling or we will give up some big plays if not corrected. There isn't just one that needs to improve. All three of them.

I felt like Olshansky and Spears did a good job vs the run. I felt like the backups struggled a tad but nothing critical.

I noticed Siavii, Bowen, and Hatcher all were subbing in throughout the game.

I thought Spencer had a good game. He was very good in coverage, especially in the flats, and was so close to getting to the Quarterback. He had pressure on a few plays. He just needs to keep pluggin and the sacks will come.

The Panther Scoring drive

It was late in the 2nd quarter and they had the ball in their own territory.

We let them complete 3 hitches by having our corners backed off way to far. It was just to easy and by the time they had completed the 3rd hitch they were to midfield.

I know Hamlin took a lot of heat for the big play that James was covering on but it was just a good play by the Panthers.

They came out in 4 wide, we had 1 safety deep, and Delhomme threw a perfect pass over Bradies head.

There wasn't a lot of air on the ball either so it was just a tough play for Hamlin to make.

On the Touchdown play we had 1 Safety again and the Panthers ran 2 inside seem routes.

Smith was on the left side and #88 was on the other.

Newman let Smith get to the inside of him, Delhomme gives a quick pump fake to Smith, Hamlin has to obey it because Smith was open, and he comes back and hits #88.

I know people saw Jenkins in the screen but it would've been a tough play for him to make too.

After going back and watching the game I think it was just the Panthers with Perfect playcalls against those coverages.

If you want to blame anyone for that drive then blame Wade, not Hamlin.

Also Butlers 2 sacks both came on Speed moves to the outside. Thats right Rampage, Speed moves.

On his 2nd sack though he gave Otah a nice little swat move. It was just enough to allow himself to get around him.

Offense

I'll start with the blocking.

I thought Colombo struggled bigtime in the 1st half but bounced back and had a solid 2nd half.

On the 2 point conversion that got us to 21 points he absolutely caved his man in and allowed Tashard to walk into the endzone.

Felix Jones is struggling as a blocker. It looked like he just didn't recognize who to pick up at times. They need to work with him on this.

John Phillips did an awesome job @ blocking when lined up at fullback. I was impressed.

Deon Anderson was awesome as well. We are fortunate to have that guy. On the Choice TD he had a fantastic block and had a handful of good blocks all night.

Andre
and Bigg owned the Panther nosetackle several times on double teams.

Kosier had an outstanding game and his ability to pull and block in space was incredible Monday night. That is such a tough thing for a OLinemen and he made it look easy.

Adams I felt had the best night out of all of our linemen.

On the Felix 40 yard Run Flo did an excellent job of blocking the Dend and getting to the 2nd level to cut off the linebacker. He was just as big apart of that big play as Felix.

Witten also made a good block on that play as well.

I didn't get to see every route Roy Williams ran but the routes I did see looked sharp and he was physical coming off the LOS. I think we need to look for that guy more.
----

Dallas did some sloppy things that caused this game not to be a blowout but in the end we won and I hope they come out ready to play Sunday Night because Denver will be ready.

If sloopy = stupid then I agree.

Nice job!

Great summary! We seem to be covering the flats better as of late. That was the area where we got exposed a few years ago. Especially against New Orleans. Then other teams did the same thing...adding to our December woes that year.

Good stuff overall.

I will keep saying it, Roy Williams' value cannot be measured simply by the number of catches he makes. He is a HUGE key to our running game success with his downfield blocking. EVERY run that went for any yardage you can see him blocking someone in front of the runner, every time! I had no clue how good he was as a blocker until this year.

Yes sloppy does = stupid.

We had to kick 2 fields goals because John Phillips had a False Start penalty and Garrett lost his mind and threw 2 lobs.

I also wanted to point out that Bradie James struggled getting of blocks in this game. He's had much better days.

Also Dallas may or may not have the best Offensive line in the league but, without see'ing a lot of other teams play this year, I doubt any other team blocks as well as a entire Offensive unit as we do.

Thumper...it brings tears to my eyes to read posts from people that understand the total game of football and aren't fantasy stat mutants.

On the comments of the defense - people in the chat room were killing Newman for missing some tackles in the first half. Terence Newman doesn't like Steve Smith very much -- most of those missed tackles were a result of Newman attempting to take Smith's head clean off. Once he settled down and played football in the 2nd half, we saw Newman in coverage, tight, keeping within arms distance of Smith on pretty much all routes. Defensive effort was much better. With Ware having a neck injury, I'd expect to see more of #57 flying around all over the place...

Butler played in other parts of the game too other than the last drive.

He didn't make any plays but the effort was definetely there. He comes in and plays hard.

This is really nit-picky but you're not looking at "tape". Tape is what players and coaches get to look at from angles specifically to help them in their learning process.

All we get is whatever ESPN wants to show us.

But thanks for your breakdown nonetheless. :star:

Doesn't NFL.com offer the game "film" for download from a few different angles?

I need to pick up the panthers game since my DVD-R's clock was off with a power outtage we had last week. I really don't it when I can't watch the game immediately after it's over.

Yeah I noticed someone say something about it last week so I figured the title probably drew some attention.

Maybe I should rename it to A Touch Of CATCH17stility.

I did spend an hour and a half going back and looking at this stuff so I just wanted people to read it.

ESPN does give end zone angles from time to time and thats what coaches use for the most part.

NBC had the Endzone angle but a lot more of it.

Those cameras hanging over the field can be incredibly useful.

That's what I was saying. I don't think it was his fault. I thought they were playing cover 3 or something, with Jenkins on the outside lined up over a wide-out. Rosario just blows past the LB, and Jenkins from the outside runs inwards to try and cover him. It looked bad cause you saw him in the screen trying to catch up. But if you saw an overhead view of the play you'll see Jenkins try to help out and he gets blamed for it.

Yeah it would've been an extremely tough play to make and for his efforts of getting himself back in the television screen he looked like he got toasted.

Wade called a heck of a game Monday Night but I think that entire Panther scoring drive was on him based on the coverages.

No, it was Jenkins' fault and he admitted as much after the game. He bit on a play in the flats that was already covered and the TE run past him. It wasn't on Hamlin one bit because he was cheating towards the spot STEVE SMITH was running.

This is something that has been bothering me. Everyone acts like that was such a poor call but did you notice that the ball hit RoyW in the hands?!? That was a touchdown and Roy dropped it. He even admitted it but everyone wants to grind their axe against Garrett. If Roy does his job and holds onto the ball, we are not having this conversation. The way some people put blinders on on this board is rediculous.

I sure as hell don't like to settle for field goals. That needs to be straightened out. Dallas should never be shut out at the goal line with that OL.

The only team that beats Dallas, is Dallas. I mentioned on another thread sometimes you want to get technical with Double Queen's Pawn when what you really need is a sledge hammer to kill a gnat. Don't over-think the game when the field is that short. Just beat the **** out of them an inch at a time.

Last year, around mid season if you said that Kosiar would be the highlight of the constant Lions/Cowboys exchange I'm sure you would of been laughed off this board. Go to see players making improvements late in their career.

In another post Sturm said that we are so predictable inside the 5 running draws that he was screaming it and so was the Panthers D - So Garrett calls 2 lobs that are out of the ordinary and everyone rips him for it. I am not against those calls at all, WIlliams should have caught it and this conversation would be moot, and then you have Marty on a LB if Romo throws a better pass, I give that to Marty everytime.

You are right about all of that but wouldn't you like to see JG go with the high percentage play when the game is in reach like that?

I'll let him get by with 1 fade but back to back fades with our oline?

I've been a big supporter of Garrett all year but I think he deserves to be questioned for those calls.

BTW I hope the Cowboys find time to get Romo on the same page with these WR's when running that route.
