A few things I noticed after looking at the tape

Was it on the Panther's td drive that Jenkins whiffed on the tackle that allowed them to convert the critical third down *and* get out of bounds? I remember at the time being frustrated that that kind of slop was extending drives when it should have put our two-minute offense on the field.

Andre and Bigg owned the Panther nosetackle several times on double teams.

No offense, but that 700lbs of muscular bulk could probably move a loaded semi out of the way. :laugh2:

I've been taking notice on Deon Andersons superb blocking skills...:star:

I have also noticed Anderson playing very well. I was down on him until recently and have been impressed.

The Panthers had plenty of time to get down the field

The reason they got to mid-field is because we played soft coverage with our corners and Jake and his receivers just took the cushion that we gave them.

Once they got to midfield it was going to be tough to stop them from getting points.

I'll give Wade credit for an awesome defensive performance but i'll also give him blame for those coverages that allowed the Carolina scoring drive.

My initial thought was blame Hamlin but after I watched it again I doubt Ed Reed could've made either play.

That's what I was saying. I don't think it was his fault. I thought they were playing cover 3 or something, with Jenkins on the outside lined up over a wide-out. Rosario just blows past the LB, and Jenkins from the outside runs inwards to try and cover him. It looked bad cause you saw him in the screen trying to catch up. But if you saw an overhead view of the play you'll see Jenkins try to help out and he gets blamed for it.

Throw in the fact that it was a fantastic read, excellent execution (by the Panthers), and a perfect throw, it's hard to criticize anything other than the defensive play that was called. I've never been a big fan of Cover 1. It's too easy to manipulate the deep safety and your only safety net.

Gotta gives props to Delhomme on that play. He threw an absolute perfect ball. You know what they say: A perfect pass will beat perfect coverage every time. Jake delivered big time on that one.

In another post Sturm said that we are so predictable inside the 5 running draws that he was screaming it and so was the Panthers D - So Garrett calls 2 lobs that are out of the ordinary and everyone rips him for it. I am not against those calls at all, WIlliams should have caught it and this conversation would be moot, and then you have Marty on a LB if Romo throws a better pass, I give that to Marty everytime.

I agree that we were "going to the well" too many times with the draw, and I'm sure the Panthers were catching on also. I'm wondering why we aren't using Phillips down there like we used to use Tony Curtis. The play action fake to Curtis was a very successful play for us. Even at that rate. Choice was BANGING the ball. I still would have went three straight times (yes even on 4th down) right up the gut on them. The whole thing was too over thought IMHO.

Some nice obs...Yeah, Felix has to improve on blocking in the backfield...I think it was Choice who was quoted about how that was the most important thing he learned early in his NFL career - blocking.

Cowboys vs Panthers

Defense

Carolina came out running a lot of short passes in the 1st half. They did things to try and get their receivers the ball quick and force our DB's to make Tackles.

Our Corners have to get better at tackling or we will give up some big plays if not corrected. There isn't just one that needs to improve. All three of them.

I felt like Olshansky and Spears did a good job vs the run. I felt like the backups struggled a tad but nothing critical.

I noticed Siavii, Bowen, and Hatcher all were subbing in throughout the game.

I thought Spencer had a good game. He was very good in coverage, especially in the flats, and was so close to getting to the Quarterback. He had pressure on a few plays. He just needs to keep pluggin and the sacks will come.

I would also note that when playing both the Giants and the Panthers in the last 2 minutes of each game, our defense gave quite a bit of ground. Just me, but I was holding my breath wishing we could stop the outside receptions.
