Cowboys vs Chiefs

This wasn't the impressive showing we had all hope for but the way we won has to give this team a confidence boost.

There is still way to many penalties and mental mistakes that happen with this team and at this point im not confident in Wade to get it taken care even though I feel like he has done a good job coordinating the defense lately.

Defense

I felt like the defense wasn't that bad again this week.

The Offense put our defense in a position to give up the first 10 points of the game.

On the Vrabel Touchdown I couldn't figure out exactly who was supposed to have covered him but I am going to guess it was Watkins.

It looked like Watkins had the option to either blitz or cover and he chose to Blitz after seeing the playaction. When he did Vrabel was left alone for a TD.

If it wasn't on Watkins than it was on Ware but it would've been easier for Watkins to cover him based on our defenses allignment.

I thought Mike Jenkins had an solid game. On the play he hurt his toe on he had a nice pass break up after jamming Bowe at the line of scrimmage and then didn't give up his inside and played the ball to knock down the pass.

Demarcus Ware got his 1st sack in this game against the Right Tackle for the Chiefs. He rushed 2 yards upfield then gave him an inside move and got the sack.

He rushed from the LOLB spot several times in this game.

Bradie James really struggled in space in this game.

It looked like Haley wanted to isolate against him and cause him to make plays in the passing game. He got called for Pass Interference twice.

Larry Johnson also had a big run to the outside by getting Bradie into space and beating him to the edge later on in the game.

He wasn't terrible in this game but he wasn't that good either. Haley obviously told Cassel to try and go after Bradie James in coverage

Keith Brooking was flying around the entire game as was really effective as a blitzer. I can't say enough about this guy and the Passion he plays with.

I also felt like Newman bounced back this week and had a nice game outside of his non-fair catch on Punt Return.

I can't go without giving Jay Ratliff some major props. He was our best play defensively in this game and played his butt off. The Field goal block was  .

Chiefs late scoring drive

It was 3rd and 14 and we were just about ready to stop them and end the game. Scandrick bit on a underneath route and looked like he realized quickly that he made the wrong decision and should have stayed on his man.

He quickly tried to get back in position to make a play but it was to late and Cassel threw the ball to Bobby Wade to pick up the 1st down.

The next play Bowe catches a 1st down. It looked like James had to guard to zone flats. Well there was nobody to guard and he just released Bowe in the process.

Cassel recognized this and quickly gunned it to Bowe before Newman had a chance to ever get there to break the pass up.

Lol @ Bobby Carpenter trying to pump up the KC crowd noise.

4th & 7 Jenkins looked like he thought he had inside help from Hamlin.

Hamlin looked indecisive on who he was supposed to cover and just froze up as the ball sailed over his head for the TD.

Watkins tried to get back and make a play but it was to little to late.

I could be wrong about which safety was supposed to help. To me it looked like it should've been Hamlin but without an endzone angle and knowing the Cowboys exact coverage call there is no way to be 100% sure.

Offense

Penalties really killed us all day. So many times we didn't have manageable down and distances.

I felt like Marion Barber did an excellent job in blitz pick up yesterday. He was a key factor in the passing game as far as protection goes.

As far as a runner he just wasn't hitting the hole like his normal self. A lot of "toe dipping' from him. Im sure it has to do with the injury.

On the Romo fumble it looked like there wasn't that great of an exchange with Romo, and Gurode, and Davis knocked the ball out when he was pulling to the left.

On the series where Austin had the ball knocked away from him we came to Hurd on the next play.

Romo wasn't exactly accurate with the pass and it looked like he might have hurried his throw a little. It still should've been caught but the timing looked off on the play. We still got the field goal though.

The Tashard Choice Touchdown run was a trap play.

Bennett and Witten both blocked down to seal off the linebackers, Anderson had a kick out block that he actually held on, and Davis pulled and didn't get the best of blocks but hit his guy so hard that it knocked him off balance and didn't allow him to make a play. Choice did the rest by taking it to the house.

Tashard Choice was hitting the hole much hard than Barber was in this game.

Miles Austin. This guy was bigtime this week. He showed that you don't have to throw it to him 30 yards downfield in order for him to make a play.

He went up to catch passes, he showed great skills as a possesion guy, on the 3rd and 5 he broke 2 tackles on a slant to take it to the house, and he showed his up's when he went up for a pass and used his 6'3 frame to make a play.

Also on a 3rd and 6 Romo scrambled around and Austin worked his way to get open and eventually Romo found him. Big play.

Overtime scoring drive

The big play to get us to midfield was a Tashard Choice run to the right.

The play he bounced out to the right on a trap play that was the exact same play he scored on earlier in the game except to the opposite side.

Bennett and Witten blocked down, Anderson kicked out (held again too), and Kosier pulled. Big play for us.

The a couple of plays later Flozell gets called for holding and makes it 2nd and 15.

And THEN Miles Austin on 2nd and 15 takes a Hook route to the house for the go ahead Touchdown and game winner in overtime.

Things I believe need to be worked on during the bye week

1. Blitz recognition - Especially the defensive back blitzes. Our Offense hasn't done a good job recognizing DB's when they blitz.

2. Hurry up Defense - This team is playing good defense but in the hurry up we don't look like we are prepared for every situation and look confused at times. The Carolina TD is an example and the Chiefs/Bowe TD is an example.

3. Get Miles Austin ready - Dont let him just fade away like we do everytime he has a big game. He can bring a dynamic aspect to this offense so let him play.

4. 3rd down passing - We need to work on giving Romo more options to throw to on 3rd down.

5. Red Zone passing - We've had some drops but this needs to be worked on until we get it right. The timing needs to be perfect and the receivers need to get better at adjusting to the ball in that area of the field.

6. NOT having 15 penalties per game: they should work on that.

So what tape did you review?

Fox broadcast I suppose.

Good write up nonetheless.

Man... what is Ken Hamlins problem? He was a stud in 2007, but has been garbage since getting paid.

Safety has been a black hole for us since #28 retired.

7. Staying onsides and not false starting. Our team has yet to master one of the most elementary concepts of the game.

There were ALOT of Cowboys fans there.

I was stunned by how loud the cheering was when the Cowboys would make a good play. Made sense for Bobby to try to hype them up in his official capacity of on-field cheerleader.

So now its official? LOL. I wonder if we will even offer him a lowball contract when its time.

the reality is Ken Hamlin is terrible....and Bradie James is average. Make no mistake about it....he is average. And the problem with this is as follows: he has been here a long time and is the captain of the defense....as a 3-4 team, you cannot have an average LBer hang around this long....nor can you look to him to lead this defense. And please don't start with how many sacks he got last year....Keith Brooking has been here 5 games and he ALREADY looks better than James.

I don't think James is terrible. He's just not a complete LB, playing run and pass equally well. Heck, very few of those guys exist. Last weekend, Carson Palmer drops a TD over the head of Ray Lewis who IMO didn't get enough depth on his drop. It happens. I think Bradie is quite a bit better than average, though.

Seriously how does Hamlin even watch game film with teammates? The guy is an embarassment to the Dallas Cowboys. He makes the mistakes of an undrafted FA trying to make the team in the 4th game of a preseason game. He takes poor angles, he's indecisive in coverage and his tackling has to be the worst of any starting S in the league.

Help me out here, I noticed the AP report on the game stated "Tony Romo overthrew several open receivers" but I really don't recall that happening very much in the game, maybe a few times. Did I just miss them all?

Yes, the defense looks a little unsure of itself out there, maybe they're thinking too much or playing scared.

we can agree to disagree...he is average. You HAVE to have someone on defense that demands that the defense not give up drives for TDs at the ends of halves. We do this all the time. It cost us a playoff game against the Giants in 07. It cost us a game against the Giants this year. It cost us a game against the Broncos this year. It ALMOST cost us a game against the Chiefs. I am long past moaning after a win, but my gosh. We will never get over the hump until this soft as charmin mentality ends. Now that I think about it, didnt' we almost give up a scoring drive at the end of the 1st half against the Bucs? But they missed the FG. You do not want to get this kind of rep in the league...and I think we have it.

I'm just saying if that's your criteria then Ray Lewis is average based on what's happened to them this season.

When Miles scored the TD, my first thought was that we scored too fast and that was too much time for our defense to be on the field. The biggest problem with this team is they can't close out when they need it. I will give the defense credit for stepping up in overtime the two times the Chiefs were up around mid field.
