It's what we do. Yesterday and earlier today people were "praising Jerry" for not taking Johnny, and going OG.

They just can't help themselves.

So we can't praise a good move, because a bad move happens (the next day)?

No, my point is, we can't help ourselves. Instead of just staying put and taking BPA, we have to trade. And we always pay too much.

Hey, I've been preaching Demarcus Lawrence for months. I even drafted him in our mock. But I would have never given up a 3rd rounder like that. We are absolutely inept in the front office. This team lacks depth and we just carelessly throw away draft picks.

On the Ticket it was said that the Falcons were going to draft him for sure two picks later, and the Cowboys knew this. They also knew he was the only WDE left on the board who had what they were looking for. I was shocked they had to give up a 3, and bummed, but I understand their motivation. It was not done carelessly.

well......YEAH on the 3rd rounder. BTW...wouldn't care so much if that 3rd rounder didn't go to the SKINS....unreal.

Why in the world would any team that had the worst defense in the NFL & in franchise history spend a second AND third round pick on ONE player, when they obviously have so many holes to fill? This is the deepest draft in my memory. It boggles the mind. At pick #47, DEs Kony Ealy, Kareem Martin, Trent Murphy, Jackson Jeffcoat, Scott Crichton, etc., plus DTs Timmy Jernigan, Louis Nix, DaQuan Jones, Kelcy Quarles, Will Sutton, Ego Ferguson, etc. were all available. No one can convince me that a defense sorely lacking in so many areas is better off bundling multiple picks for one player. Just one more example why this team remains an afterthought come playoff time.

You should post a lot more. You know what you're talking about. This was a HORRENDOUS trade. Absolutely disgusting. What in the hell were they thinking?

The number of players you mention doesn't matter if we didn't want them. We had Lawrence rated as a 1st round talent and wanted him before the Falcons could get him. Saying this or that player is available doesn't matter. Look what happened to JF.
This times a million, and I'm not even a huge fan of the move.

You could play the "we could have had these two guys and stayed put" literally every time a team trades up.

At least we got a blue chip offensive lineman and a premium pass rusher with our first two picks.

Of course the Cowboys will float out the information that Lawrence was. just. about. to. go. when they made this trade.

By now you know that occurred within 20 minutes

Jerry Jones on Demarcus Lawrence: "I was impressed with his hands. I am impressed with the size."

I get your response but I read that the drop off after Lawrence was significant.
The T2 is a pressure scheme [obvious] so they paid the price. The Falcones
were the problem. I would love to have had the three and I don't know how good
Lawrence like be. Marinelli must have been on board .

They were scared of Cleveland after they missed on Barr so they did what they had to do in their eyes.

Seattle went with Irvin 15th overall cause they felt they needed the player for their scheme and had no trade partners.

We obviously felt, like we did with Frederick last year we had to make that pick at that particular spot or lose the player.

Marinelli checked this kid out and propped him up.

I guess like Callahan did Frederick last year.

Weren't you the one pleading that the Cowboys move up to draft Donald?

I hate to lose the 3rd but under the circumstances I understand why they paid the piper to get their guy.

I like Demarcus Lawrence, he has violent hands and he really gets after the QB (hunter) and puts him in the ground while stripping the football.

He needs seasoning in terms of getting off blocks, technique work with reference to pass rush moves and with respect to recognition.

I do think he has upside, certainly plays faster than his 40 time! We certainly needed the RDE and pass rush, they made it happen!

I don't get the comments that he might be a Nickel only DE or a 3-4 OLB. He is one of the best WDE types at defending the run.

I think it's moreso a comment about the idea that if he is going to be an NFL caliber defensive end he needs to get a bit stronger/bigger.

He is a bit of a project in that he needs to be subject to an NFL weight and conditioning program for a year or two to be able to handle NFL LT's every snap for a 16 game season. His strength is rushing the passer so keep him fresh by playing him in the situations where that is what he will be doing.

Besides, 3 wide is so common in today's NFL that he will still see a significant number of snaps. We also seem to be embracing the philosophy of keeping the D-line fresh by rotating them often.

He will start immediately. He has upside with a professional conditioning program as well. They had him as the 3rd best edge rusher in the draft, I didn't but who the hell am I?

I have you tube videos and combine numbers to look at. We have to trust that our scouts have more information to make a better decision.

Would be nice to have that 3rd rounder, but it was a good trade because they did it for the right skill at the right time. Without any threat of a pass rush, this D is dead in the water. Getting the extra 3rd last year (and drafting two starters there) makes this deal more palatable.

Well you can't please everyone. No matter what people would have been mad or happy. You have some people that are happy we didn't take Manziel and some people that are pissed that we didn't take him. What some people fail to realize is Dallas is targeting specific players that they feel can play in their specific scheme. Also a lot of the players mentioned above, the cowboys didn't even have a 3rd round grade on a lot of them are 4th round grades because of the specific fit for their defense. Dallas picked Lawrence cuz they feel he is a perfect fit for the WDE. He is quick twitch he can get off the line quick and come screaming around the corner really fast just like ware. Had this kid stayed in college another year he would have easily went in the first round. I believe the only other player Dallas like was Jernigan but even with that they feel with Jernigan that he wouldn't contribute much cuz they don't think he is a 3 down player. They don't Believe in drafting a 1-technique very high for their defense because the 1-technique in Dallas style defense doesn't play all 3 downs. The numbers that Lawrence put up for only two college seasons are straight up ridiculous. 134 tackles 34 tackles for loss 20 sacks 7 forced fumbles 3 blocked kicks on special teams and two interceptions. You can't teach his type of abilities you either have it or you don't. They believe this kid can be a three down starter. Not only does he have tremendous ability to get after the QB he also is a great run stopper even better then ware was although the WDE job is not to be a run stopper his job is to strictly rush the QB. They believe this kid still has a lot of tremendous upside even after all the great numbers he put up. Will McClay's exact words were he is a quarterback killer. This is Will McClays first year being the head guy in the draft room and he is very smart. Dallas wasn't very high on Hageman, Nix, Tuitt, or sutton. All those guys can be had in the 4th round according to their board. They believe they can get a solid 1-technique in the fourth and fifth round why spend a high draft pick on someone that is only gonna play 1-2 downs and not all three downs that makes absolutely know sense to spend a quality draft pick on someone that is only a two down player. I know a bunch of people on this forum that liked Attaochu and wanted him in the 2nd round well I am hearing from my sources that they had a 4th round grade on him. Dallas wants specific players for their defense and I do believe they can find a quality 1-technique in the 4th or 5th round. Besides that the way Marinelli runs his defense is he likes to attack in waves with fresh bodies coming in and ready to attack that's why depth is important in our type of defense. I do know my football and I do know my Cowboys I have done a lot of research on players and I have a lot of football knowledge and I grew up in a football family I have family members and friends who are D1 college coaches not head coaches but a position coaches. Now I am not doubting anyones knowledge on this board or trying to disrespect anyone I am just trying to give everyone a new perspective on the way we drafted and trying to help some people understand and be happy with what we did. Also Lawrence was the 8th best defensive player on the cowboys board and they did have a 1st round grade on him so in Dallas eyes they got two first round picks that can come in and start day 1. The draft is still not over with I believe we get one more DL a WR and a LB. The rest I really don't care. I hope this post helps some people understand why we drafted the way we did and why the cowboys are so high on Lawrence.

I hope Jerry realizes that not all Demarcuses are created equal. Replacing a Ware for a Lawrence will not b seemless. IMO, this was a trade that happened one round too late & Lawrence is a little weak, mentally and physically.

Jerry could have remained patient (and saved a pick) and taken a more self motivated and physical player with similar size and athleticism: Jeremiah Attaochu

Feel the same way about Frederick too?

Like everyone else..these guys give their opinions...theirs vary as much as ours do...if he pans out all will be forgotten just like the Frederick pick
