A Maher Proposal

Next time Maher has to kick a 40-yarder, just snap it all the way back to the 40-45 yard line. Money.

not Phil Niekro's?
For some reason, I don’t really remember seeing Phil, maybe because I was a Yankees fan growing up & then a Rangers fan after the came in ‘72. I wouldn’t have known much about Hough since he was in the NL (Dodgers if I reoright) except he signed with Texas and was a mainstay here. R. A. Dickey, another Ranger, also had a wicked knuckle and just seemed to baffle the Rangers after he left here.

I am not sure what the deal is but I play basketball a lot. I am actually better at longer range shots than the shorter ones. It is a different stroke out of your hand. Maybe the same with kickers? Because it is no fluke anymore. This dude is money from 60 plus. It's pretty remarkable. He is the best long distance kicker in terms of accuracy this league has seen. But anything inside 50, you get nervous. I actually had a great feeling he would make the 60s kicks this week and last.
Kind of reminds me how LeBron sucks at free throws but is great from three. If he took his free throws from the three point line, he’d hit a high percentage. It doesn’t make sense but I get it.

I expect if Maher were to kick as often from 60 yards as he does from 40 we would find he isn't any better from 60.
Actually he’s 7 of 12 from 40-49 yds
He’s 9 of 12 from 50yds or more
I was surprised he has attempted as many over 50 as between 40-49

Obviously, we shouldn't try to back ourselves up to let Maher try a long FG. But I propose that the Cowboys change their mindset. From now on, any time they are past midfield, they should either 1) go for it on fourth down or 2) let Maher try an <68-yard field goal attempt. No more punts from the opposing teams' 47-yard line.

Guess it depends on the in game situation. If its 4th and 17 and you trot Maher out for a 65 yard field goal in the the 1st quarter or decide to go for it they're crazy. But I'm not opposed to going for it in 4th and short scenarios. Think the long field goal philosophy only works in situations you have to hit it to win the game or the half is expiring. Otherwise you give your opponent way too short of a field.

It's the same in any sport. Many things go into kicking a FG that people don't think about usually. Over thinking is another thing when making kicks, trying for 60 plus you have nothing to lose because it's such a difficult kick. Perhaps Maher it's just thinking to much about the shorter kicks.

Maybe let Heath kick 40 and less..... just joking

I know you meant this as a joke, but the Cowboys could seriously consider asking their long snapper to snap an extra 4-6 yards deeper for Maher. It would make FGs virtually impossible to block, as the defense just can't get there in time.

Could be a hard time for L.P. though... how about we just have a couple delay of game calls before hand.

They say LP snaps balls into open mail boxes. He has hung around so long bc he’s insanely capable. That’s not a rebuttal, just praise for LP.

Like how you hit that 250+ drive when you are just goofing around, but duck hook it into the woods when the Captains Choice team needs you?

It's funny. Bruce Arians, facing a 29-yard FG last week, had his team take a deliberate delay-of-game penalty to make it a 34-yarder, because he thought the FG was "easier back 5 yards." It wasn't. Matt Gay just barely missed with a kick that would have been good from 5 yards closer. I wonder if it would work with Maher, though. :)
That is as dumb as icing your own kicker. Arian’s really did that?

Maher will win a game this season with a ridiculous kick on the final moments.
Honestly, more likely to lose a game on a 30-40 yarder. I don’t like saying this, but to many of his kicks inside 40 yards either miss or barely make it.
