A Maher Proposal

Next time Maher has to kick a 40-yarder, just snap it all the way back to the 40-45 yard line. Money.
It's funny. Bruce Arians, facing a 29-yard FG last week, had his team take a deliberate delay-of-game penalty to make it a 34-yarder, because he thought the FG was "easier back 5 yards." It wasn't. Matt Gay just barely missed with a kick that would have been good from 5 yards closer. I wonder if it would work with Maher, though. :)

I am not sure what the deal is but I play basketball a lot. I am actually better at longer range shots than the shorter ones. It is a different stroke out of your hand. Maybe the same with kickers? Because it is no fluke anymore. This dude is money from 60 plus. It's pretty remarkable. He is the best long distance kicker in terms of accuracy this league has seen. But anything inside 50, you get nervous. I actually had a great feeling he would make the 60s kicks this week and last.

I expect if Maher were to kick as often from 60 yards as he does from 40 we would find he isn't any better from 60.

Obviously, we shouldn't try to back ourselves up to let Maher try a long FG. But I propose that the Cowboys change their mindset. From now on, any time they are past midfield, they should either 1) go for it on fourth down or 2) let Maher try an <68-yard field goal attempt. No more punts from the opposing teams' 47-yard line.

So far this year FYI. He’s missed one in the 30-39 yard mark.... and 1 from 40-49. I think the other 2 were from 50 plus. Certainly not gimmes.
40-49 isn’t a gimme either.

however he’s made all of his extra points 22 out of 22. Which is essentially at 32 yard fg or so. essentially he’s missed only one kick from inside 40 yards if you include extra points.

he starts missing those id worry... right now I’m not. We’ll see going forward

There is no rhyme or reason to his misses. Remember the Commanders game last season? That bullcrap penalty for the LS "spinning" the ball? They moved the ball back 5 yards, and he misses a kick that would have been good if it was 5 yards closer.

Maher will win a game this season with a ridiculous kick on the final moments.
It's funny, right? The crazy part of it is that he could just as easily miss a crucial one from the 35! Gotta be a psychological thing!

This.

Kicks of this range have very low, to zero expectation of conversion. Tee it up and hammer it.

What it does prove is ability and provide yet another chance to build confidence on the more common fga's.

Last season Maher only had 2 missed FGs in and indoor stadium.

It's interesting that he made the 63 yard FG yesterday from the right hash marks. That side has been a problem for him in the past.
only short due how he "curves" the ball

We should at least be doing a hard count and be willing to take the delay of game penalty if need be. Its sounds silly, but once in awhile its probably a good idea considering how he kicks.

its the right hash short that seems to be his kryptonite. His kicks tend to fade than draw back in and up close there is not enough distance. Maybe they need to get a kicking coach...
Good observation. Last night’s 63 yarder started well right of center and was leaking right for a good way before drawing back to the left. Kind of looked like a Charlie Hough knuckleball.
