How many 3-4 NT's are 3 down players?
I can name one.
On a team with a few holes I don't think it's a big deal drafting a backup NT in the 2nd round. And just because he's going to be a backup at first doesn't mean it will stay that way. I would have no problem with Cody bumping a guy like Siavii off the roster. Our SB teams in the 90's didn't carry any dead weight like Siavii on the DL. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with a guy like Cody taking snaps away from Hatcher and Bowen. He can backup ALL 3 DL POSITIONS just like Wilfork did as a rookie.
And personally, I could care less what Ratliff wants. I guarantee you he never thought he would be All Pro at NT. Every 4-3 DL I've ever heard interviewed coming out of school prefers a 4-3 vs 3-4. Every 4-3 DE I've ever heard prefers to play 4-3 DE vs 3-4 OLB.
I just don't see how a team can block Rat at RDE with Ware next to him at OLB. If you put the tackle on Ware and chip him with a RB you get Rat 1 on 1 with a Guard. If you double team Rat with OG/OT then Ware is 1 on 1 with a RB.
With Cody at NT you move Rat around and give an element of suprise to our D not knowing if he is going to be at RDE, LDE or NT. That would also be a hell of a 4 man line if you wanted to go to a 4-3 look at times.......
Spencer Cody Rat Ware.........
Bama also used him as a goalline FB lead blocking for Ingram this year.
God knows how many issues we had punching it in from close this year.
Anyone saying he's a 10-15 snap player just isn't very creative.
