TONY POLLARD: OUTPRODUCING HIS PREDECESSOR DESPITE A SLOW START TO THE SEASON

Technically, Tony Pollard's role stayed the same. However, he moved up the depth chart when Ezekiel Elliott exited stage right.

So far this season, he's been up and down at best. Depending on who you believe, Tony is right where McCarthy expected him to be after five games. He has 81 total carries and 19 receptions, averaging over 20 touches per game. Tony has accumulated 436 yards from scrimmage. That's 87.5 yards per game. You want to know something interesting: his current average of 87.5 is higher than his season average of 81.05 last year. The primary back, Ezekiel Elliott, accounted for 332 yards on 86 total touches last season. TP20 is getting more touches and gaining more yards as a result of it.

What could the problem be? Dallas should have factored in how good Tony and Zeke were as a committee. We're getting a different production from the second back in this offense.

Here's the verdict – Pollard is still figuring things out as the primary runner, but McCarthy needs more consistency from the backup.

Use of motion...

The Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, and the opponent this week, the Chargers, are the top motion teams in the NFL, and they are also top end offenses. In contrast, Dallas uses motion at a bottom five level in 2023.

The ownership of the Cowboys might see motion as “trick plays,” and they would prefer the team just win straight up, but the use of motion works for Dallas when it is implemented. The only touchdown scored against the 49ers was when they sent KaVontae Turpin in motion for a TD reception.

The offense set up the nickel corner of San Francisco to have to play man coverage against the fastest player for the Cowboys on a third-and-four play. Turpin, having the ability to break in for a first-down reception, can make the defender hesitate enough to blow right by him with a slot fade for a touchdown.

This is what motion brings. It allows the offense to set up favorable matchups against opposing defenses so the QB can exploit them. The best offenses help their receivers gain separation and make reads easy on their QB. Dallas needs to use it more to improve their offensive performance to beat the top teams in the NFL.

Excuses for Pollard possibly by the writer?
I been told many times, any RB can play in the NFL.
They either have it or they don't.

Pollard is above average, but he has not been impressive. Maybe it is him just getting the feel of the offense, adjusting to be the main RB. Still apprehensive over his injury.
Combination of it all.

All I know is they better get it all fixed across the entire team.

You want me to believe that the offense for Dallas isn't currently in the process of improving? That is a mirage...

As to not being on the proper sheet of music and still a very strong producer and without the backup runner to increase opponent reactions...I would have to be very foolish to throw out the baby with the after birth. Just to maintain perspective. Sorry, this fan is still rooting and being patient. This offensive line will make it work and the coaches getting an effective pairing straight will start to put more than a couple of linebackers on their heels and spread the field. According to original plans.

Difference in opinion is what fuels passion, education, and healthy conversations within the community. And there is a conversation going on about Dak Prescott, so let’s talk about it. An unapologetic warning up front, we’ll be taking the positive view of Prescott here.

Dak has been efficient this season as he plays into the new system with his completion percentage being just under 70%. Last Sunday he ran into a buzzsaw that is the 49ers defense, even while understanding his three interceptions were unacceptable, that performance has been the exception and not the rule so far in 2023. Before that game, he had a 4-to-1 TD to INT ratio. Even after Week 5, Dallas is second in the league for third-down conversion percentage under his play.

Offensive Struggles Are Fixable

The start of the ‘Mike McCarthy as play-caller’ era has been a rough one. A once potent-looking offense has been reduced to underneath throws, elementary route concepts, and a nickel and dime approach to yardage. Dak is averaging his lowest ‘yards per attempt’ among other similar stats in his career. It has worked against lesser talent, but it will need to be elevated more frequently or they will continue to struggle like they did Sunday night.

Dak Prescott's yards per attempt have never been worse than they are now. Sorry, this isn't how you use a high-priced QB. Either let him throw or find someone cheaper to drive your bus!

right it's Mike McCarthy Texas coast they need to trash that first half of the playbook and only open it back up when we're blowing teams out and need to get conservative oh wait a minute... Maybe that's why this is skewed.... There's been some really odd games so far... Yes I would like Mike McCarthy to open it up and take the reins off the offense but I believe somehow at the end of 17 games it'll be back up around 2021 rates... It's really too small a sample size to say this is how the season's gonna end with all the really odd ball games we played this year I mean that biggest stat that I've seen somebody post what's that none of our games have had a lead change yet we either LED from the beginning to the end or we're behind from the beginning to the end

so if you don't find that strange and that this is a little misleading right here this chart because I believe being a brand new offense being in some strange situational football that this is gonna change by the end of the year...

Dan Quinn’s defensive unit is an aggressive bunch. They don’t want to give up an inch and they play like it. They fly to the ball, jump routes, and explode through the gaps. Sometimes that aggressiveness comes back to bite them. Arizona and San Francisco used the Cowboys’ aggressiveness against them, gashing them for big runs on the ground and double moves downfield through the air. Sometimes that aggressiveness pays off for them too. Dallas didn’t lead the league in turnovers two years in a row for playing passively. They’re always looking for the big play and seem willing to deal with the consequences if their eagerness is used against them.

A step in their maturation could be situational deployment of elasticity. Sometimes bending is the best way to prevent from breaking. And what better week to start such a practice than Week 6 going against Brandon Staley. Staley made his name as a defensive innovator in the Vic Fangio coaching tree. Staley’s defensive philosophy embraces the bend-but-don’t-break attitude. It’s traditionally been a shells coverage that takes away the big plays and dares team to patiently take what’s given to them. Then in obvious passing situations, it locks down and plays aggressively.

It’s a model many teams have been embracing over the past few seasons and an attitude the Cowboys may want to explore.

The Cowboys’ defense has shown wild extremes of feast or famine in 2023. When things go their way, they pile on. But when things go against them, things get rough quickly. They don’t need to completely shift mindsets, but maybe just accept the idea different situations call for different attitudes and strategies. The Chargers’ offense, led by Kellen Moore, are top five in red-zone scoring success rate. They know how to get six when they get close. As most Cowboys fans should remember, Moore led the entire NFL in red-zone offense last season with the Cowboys. He’s good at this.

If Quinn doesn’t have his guys prepared for Moore and focused on forcing and winning those critical third downs, it could be a long afternoon for the Cowboys.

Dude is it me or is 80% of this thread your posts LOL I mean I appreciate the effort but that is so so too much information... Just win baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I present a complete picture of game affecting points and views. They are almost all authored by media sources. As contrast to the non-ending negativity and misplaced blame always assuming failure and directed to just Jerry, McCarthy, and Dak...that boils down to lies as well as ensuring a progressive view dominates any and all opinions.

If one doesn't like my inclusion of developments of all factors, hey, ignore them and stay off.

If this is purely an insult in function, sorry, I attempt to provide at least a source involved in real discussion points. That involves ethics, which I do endorse. If you wish to ignore my threads...do so! I'm going to always provide truth in discussions. I'm a fan and talk truth, not just opinion, complete or not.

I don't bottom feed on excuses rather than discussion...

The schedule gets markedly more difficult going forward and the Cowboys can ill-afford to go into Game 7 with a 3-3 record. If they want to tale advantage of Philadelphia’s loss and close the NFC East gap and keep an inside track on a wild-card berth, they need to maintain a winning record. Facing a Chargers team fresh off a bye, they will have their work cut out for them.

Los Angeles is equally as desperate to notch a win and correct course. Their head coach is playing for his job and their offensive coordinator has a bone to pick with the Cowboys. For an interconference matchup, this has the potential to be an extremely hard-fought event between two heavily motivated teams.

Ignore those points and declare full view just isn't going to happen with me. Don't like the reason for my posting...move on.

Don't, then.

Style and content...don't like presented matter, then discuss content or stop stereotyping on number of words. By all means, go YOUR way. I'm not listening to any poster insult and ridicule...

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler will return to the lineup on Monday against the Dallas Cowboys, and he's expected to have no limitations in his return from an ankle injury.

Ekeler is one of the most dynamic running backs in the NFL as he's effective both on the ground and in the Chargers' passing attack. He's coming off a career 2022 campaign in which he rushed for 915 yards and 13 touchdowns in 17 games and also caught 107 passes for 722 yards and five scores.

again, i agree so there's no need to over explain... however we did start three and five in 2018 and turn it all around.. i also watched a lot of responses from the bengals for getting back on track at 3-3.

yes, it will be much nicer to go in at 4-2... just like the buffalo bills played like garbage and found a way to win. so much different to be 3-3 than 4- 2....

is it a must win , no, but is it important ,yes...

The set of indicators I look for is the final score. A win is a win and it don't matter how we get there along the way.
