Jacksonville Jaguars v Dallas Cowboys

The linebacker received some injuries to players in this group and needs to adjust according to game needs and then progress over time.

The Cowboys needed to go in search of depth at linebacker. Rashaan Evens was signed onto the team at position. In 2018 he and the Cowboys had a visit. He was drafted two positions after Vander Esch.

The functional element for the game against San Diego well be for this game to move Parsons back to his original position of Linebacker.

Dallas has strong depth at defensive end: DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Sam Williams, and Dante Fowler.

The return of San Diego's running back, ... prediction
Austin Ekeler over 49.5 rushing yards rush yards (-115)

Ekeler is a weapon, and now that he is back the Chargers are going to ride him. The Cowboys run defense is always available for gashing, and without Leighton Vander Esch this week it could get messy in the middle. The Chargers are going to take advantage and try to get the Cowboys.

Parsons and Damone Clark, team's second leading tackler, should be a good combination.

Five years later, Evans is in Dallas to help fill the void created by an injury to Vander Esch
Asked what's the biggest attribute he brings to Dallas, he was unequivocal.

"Physicality," he said. "I try not to be too savvy in my words about my play, and I try to leave it up to what I've shown on TV, but I can't wait for that opportunity to come

Along with that comes an opportunity, as noted above, to mentor players like Damone Clark and Malik Jefferson, as well as Mikel Jones on the practice squad and even safety Markquese Bell, who is getting a ton of work with the linebackers in 2023. Following the off game, Evans could help a lot.

How will the secondary adjust for this game?

Mailbag

Nick Harris: From what I can tell through two games, DaRon Bland has been placed in the exact role that the coaching staff would expect from Trevon Diggs – and he's excelled. It's easy to allow things to remain consistent when the defense around Bland is playing at the level that it is as well. With a suffocating pass rush, just locking down a receiver on the boundary might be all Bland has to do some Sundays. In the run game, he'll have to make open field tackles, but there shouldn't be anything different from a scheme perspective with Bland in there.

With two interceptions against the Patriots, one returned for a touchdown, the second-year corner already has three interceptions in four games and two returned for a touchdown and now eight in his short career. And no, DQ hasn't changed the scheme to compensate for the loss of Trevon Diggs. The Cowboys staff had confidence in Bland, first how he played initially in the slot and now outside at cornerback. And no, Bland is playing man for sure. Don't see much, if any zone, and regardless who is out there, the Cowboys will always try to pressure opposing quarterbacks, just as they harassed Patriots QB Mac Jones Sunday.

San Francisco came out of this week's lost stating what the Cowboys did about improving and needing to make changes for the problems revealed. They lost two important offensive producers, Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffery similarly to Dallas against them last playoffs.

The second half was particularly brutal, with the 49ers offense racking up a paltry 47 total net yards on seven possessions after halftime. Entering their final drive with minus-five net yards in the second half, they racked up 52 total yards on the possession, which ended in heartbreaking fashion as Jake Moody missed the potential game-winning field-goal wide right.
An opportunity for the Dallas Cowboys to bounce back from a demoralizing loss to the San Francisco 49ers awaits back out in the state of California when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football at SoFi Stadium.

The matchup with the Chargers will give the defensive unit for the Cowboys specific issues in the passing game where Justin Herbert has been exceptional so far this season.
Key Matchups
CeeDee Lamb vs. Asante Samuel Jr.

CeeDee Lamb was noticeably frustrated on the sideline during the loss to San Francisco as he was largely a non-factor as the game got away at Levi's Stadium. This week, there will be an expected increase in importance on getting him the ball against a Chargers defense that has largely struggled so far this season.

Matched up with him will be Asante Samuel Jr. for most of his routes, as the 2021 second-round pick continues to flourish despite his short time in the league. While the defensive options in the secondary behind Samuel are shaky, his opportunity to limit Lamb will be available.

Don't expect to see this matchup on every snap, but when lined up against each other, it'll be an opportunity for each to take advantage of a lack in production around their respective matchup's side of the ball. The question will be which one can hold court for most of the night.

Terence Steele vs. Joey Bosa/Khalil Mack

When Terence Steele was thrown into the fire as a rookie against the Chargers right back at SoFi Stadium, he came out on the other side unscathed after lining up against Joey Bosa and finding success.

This time around, it might be a little different with Bosa questionable to go as he deals with a foot injury. Whether he goes or not, Steele will still have a challenge to face in Khalil Mack who typically combines with various fellow pass rushers off each edge to throw stunts at opposing tackles.

Fresh off a six-sack effort a couple of weeks back, Steele will need to settle in to hold Mack in check. If Bosa is healthy, that challenge only doubles.

Keenan Allen vs. Jourdan Lewis

With Mike Williams out for the year due to injury, it's been the Keenan Allen show once again in Los Angeles as he enters Monday night as the Chargers' leading receiver.
Out of the slot, Allen is a physical weapon that won't blow you away with his speed, but will win an opposing matchup with death by a thousand cuts in being physical off the line in his release, fluid in route running, and a unique body control ability that gives him the advantage almost every time down the field in jump ball situations.

Jourdan Lewis will draw the task of trying to limit Allen, but it won't be easy with the disadvantage in strength. If Lewis can have his best game of the season defending Allen, the Cowboys defense will be put in a much better position to come out with the win.

In what was a true test of the Dallas Cowboys' "Texas Coast Offense" against the San Francisco 49ers, it left many seriously underwhelmed.

In the beatdown, the offense's credibility took a huge hit. But now, as the Los Angeles Chargers enter the collective view, the Cowboys get a shot at redemption.

Coach Mike McCarthy isn't stewing on the offensive deficiencies that were on show against San Francisco; he's moved on to the Chargers' 24th-ranked defense.

“I’m into the plan of how we’re going to attack their defense,” McCarthy said. “I’m focused on attack mode. We’ve done our self-scout. We’re in tune with what we’ve done. I think a big thing is what we’ve put on tape, particularly in the details of the mannerisms and how we’ve played and how it's going to line up against these guys.”

The Chargers defense gives up points (averages 26.0 per game) and hasn't kept a team under 300 total yards of offense yet this season, so that is where Dallas can attack.

The Cowboys will lean heavily on Damone Clark and Markquese Bell against the Chargers — but they could also move Micah Parsons back to linebacker as well for certain packages.

This plan would allow them to put their best players on the field with DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler, and Sam Williams splitting time on the edge while Parsons can blitz from the MLB spot. In this bold prediction that happens and Parsons records two sacks on Justin Herbert as he does his part to get the defense back on track.

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore can revisit elements of his offense that are tailored specifically to Ekeler’s skill set.

Quarterback Justin Herbert connected with Ekeler four times for 45 yards during the season opener. In the three games without him, running backs Joshua Kelley, Isaiah Spiller and Elijah Dotson combined for five catches and 33 yards.

The Cowboys have allowed 118 receiving yards to running backs this season, eighth-fewest in the NFL. A 19-yard catch by the 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey was the only reception of more than 10 yards Dallas allowed to a back in the first five games.

NUMBERS DON'T LIE

The Cowboys have a stat working in their favor though.

Since 2021, they are a league best 9-1 following a loss. That bolds well for tomorrow night.

This week has been filled with nothing but negativity.

Does the team deserve it?

Yes, but let's not forget it's only week six of the season, and if they win this game tomorrow they are sitting at 4-2. A lot of teams would take that right now.

CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott will bounce back on Monday night.

IS MONDAY’S GAME THE FIRST MUST-WIN FOR THE DALLAS COWBOYS?

As we sit back and enjoy football on a Sunday that doesn't featured the Dallas Cowboys, I found myself looking at the NFC and the rest of the Cowboys schedule.

The Chargers are a good football team on offense, but this could be a nice game for the Dallas offense to rebound.

As humbling as the 42-10 loss was the San Francisco 49ers, this team is still 3-2 with every chance to make the playoffs in a weaker NFC.

I am all for keeping it fair when it comes to the Cowboys, so is this game tomorrow a must win?

Honestly, call me crazy, but I think this team makes the playoffs even if they lose and fall to 3-3.

It's been a doom and gloom this week for the Dallas Cowboys, and for good reason.

A ripe 42-10 blowout at the hands of a team that already knocked you out of the playoffs not once but twice can create a dark cloud over the metroplex.

Add on the fact that your quarterback didn't play very well, and your offensive and defensive “veteran” coaches were out-schemed by their counterparts.

Lastly, the injury bug hit Dallas like a bag of nickels with Leighton Vander Esch and C.J. Goodwin losses.

Nevertheless, we'll focus on the good within this team.

REPLACING DALTON SCHULTZ: HOW JAKE FERGUSON IS BRINGING NEW ENERGY TO THE TEAM

I read somewhere that one of the most significant issues this team has encountered was replacing the production of Houston Texans Tight End Dalton Schultz.
Technically, it was more about his ability to be a safety blanket for Quarterback Dak Prescott. I hear what they say, but I'll raise them a Jake Ferguson. Ferguson has as much talent and probably more athleticism at this point of his career than Schultz.

According to Pro Football Focus, he ranks number 7 in his position with a 75.9% overall grade.

His stats don't wow you, but he has collected 20 of his 27 targets. Against the 49ers, Dak looked his way only three times. Dak, that's not enough. The defense presented to Dallas periodically had the middle of the field open, but we should have taken advantage of it. Mike McCarthy, that part is on you. However, Ferguson has been more than an adequate replacement for Dalton. Schultz's best season was arguably 2021 with Dallas.

The team drafted Luke Schoonmaker, but I don't see a future where Ferguson isn't the number one tight end this year or next. The cherry on top for the first-year starter is that he likes to block and is good at it.

This replacement has been more than satisfactory.

Yes it is a must win IMO, for the psyche of the team going forward. Get the bad taste of the loss out of their heads.
And now with the losses of Philly & SF just had to teams they were supposed to beat. This win can help even things out. Keeps us only 1 game behind.

Philly to reach and overcome would be at Dallas' control if both keep winning.
SF will drop a few more games IMO as well.

Mathematically at this point, no it is not a must win game, as 10 games still to go.

It is a must win game for this board. As many will continue the barrage of insane threads.

Right and Williams as well. But I have a feeling none are not serious. Not that I am advocating they should be.
Same for Johnson for Philly.
San Francisco has tremendous leadership on it's roster...
