Was this a smart move:

A new coach with zero experience coaching RB’s

Not only did the Cowboys lose the veteran presence of Elliott, but they also moved on from running backs coach Skip Peete after three seasons with the team. Replacing Peete and his 24 years of experience coaching in the NFL is Jeff Blasko.

Blasko had been the assistant offensive line coach in Dallas for the last three years, reuniting with Mike McCarthy after spending three seasons on the Packers staff. Like McCarthy, he’s a Pittsburgh native who got his start in the area before bouncing around to various high school and college coaching roles. Blasko was not promoted when offensive line coach Joe Philbin was let go, but instead reassigned to coach the running backs while also adding the title of run game coordinator.

It should be noted that Blasko has never coached running backs before, and this will be his first stint ever as the primary position coach. It’s a big jump to make in one offseason, especially with so much change occurring at the position as well.

Perhaps this is Fat Mac's way of repaying his pals before Jerald sacks his ash.

I'm not worried about Pollard, but I don't know anything about RB2. Who it will be & what to expect from which guy they pick.

"when the line opens up a hole run through it" - my old coach
It’s really that simple lol
Maybe teach them where the hole is suppose to open up which should be easy for a guy with OLine experience

Running game coordinators are typically OL coaches. Nobody knows the run game more than guys that know what really goes on with the OL.
But I do wonder if there are gonna be times when RB players want to relate to a coach that has had experiences as a RB and in tuned with what RBs are going thru
on a mental and emotional sense. It's a reason why we see RB coaches on NFL teams that actually played RB roles in their playing dayz.

It's a reason why we don't see OL coaches suddenly become RB coaches around the NFL.

This coaching move from OL to RB puzzled me as well.

That's why they picked up veteran Ronald Jones in offseason, imo.

- They knew they would like some vet presence to help Pollard with the contribution, and they knew they would be adding a rookie into the mix in the NFL draft.

- and if it works well with Jones, that will allow youthful Deuce and Malik a smoother transition more as they gradually get more into the rotation.

It's not gonna be just about the run scheme and holes ... it's gonna be about correct RB routes, catching and blocking techniques.

- Is there a different way in how RBs blitz block vs than what OL and TEs block ?
- Is there a different way in how RBs run routes .. than how TEs run routes ?

- This is up to McCarthy. This will be on McCarthy..... with this OL to RB coach move .. he personally has the inside goods on assistant OL coach Jeff Blasko
whose he's apparently known since his GB days. .

- And McCarthy has had coaching move change workings (for better or worse) in his GB days, as he's had guys like Joe Philibin move from
longtime OC ( in GB) ..... to OL coach here with Cowboys.

I think he’ll be fine. And Schottenheimer and Solari (and McCarthy) will have a ton to do with the running game as well. Frankly, I don’t see it mattering much who is at RB coach.

I guess we’ll see soon enough.

It's probably more to do with making sure they see the block setups and then make adjustments due the wholes opening up. My best guess anyway.

Both Run game ....and pass game

Remember we couldn't even run RB screens under Kellen Moore.
