I think it might be a while before we get to Doomsday levels again. Right now, I'd take Kindahurtsday.
Of course, you're probably correct but there has been a very significant improvement of the defensive talent in Dallas.
Last year's defense was certainly respectable, although they did have pretty severe limitations in the pass rush department as well as in the secondary.
I try not to get too excited about this year's defense but when you look who was added, it is kind of hard not to.
* First, it will be year two of Marinelli's leadership as DC. That should provide somewhat of an upgrade.
* Then, just by adding Greg Hardy to the defense from last year, it is possible that there would be enough of an improvement to have made a difference in Green Bay.
* Counting heavily on a rookie doesn't always come out well, but as much as he's impressed Garrett and Marinelli in camp... I do think he's going to see the field a lot and he is going to make a difference in the pass rush. Again, just adding Gregory to last year's defense might have made a difference.
* Having Demarcus Lawrence for the entire season would have made a difference last year, IMO. For all intents and purposes, Lawrence missed almost all of the regular season. This year, he will enter the season with some experience and should pick right up where he left off last year... which is making a difference in the pass rush.
* Add Sean Lee to last year's squad and I think we would see a marked improvement. His leadership and ability in coverage should provide a definite boost if he's able to stay healthy.
* By adding Byron Jones and Corey White to the secondary, will make a big difference in coverage. Their versatility and ability to play different spots in the base, nickle, and dime packages will add an element that was missing from last year's group. They both will help a secondary that had match-up issues last season with some of the 3rd and 4th WR's they faced. Either can play safety and both can cover and tackle really well. That is huge. IMO, this aspect of the defensive improvement is getting a little overlooked by fans and media. Even if the pass rush wasn't improved from last year, these two guys would make a big difference... however, the pass rush should be significantly better this year.
The synergistic effect both the secondary and the defensive line will have on each other will definitely be a case of the final product being greater than the sum of its parts. Improve just the secondary and even last year's line has more time to get to the QB. Improve just the pass rush, and even last year's secondary would have less time to cover. But improve the secondary
and the pass rush, and the resulting defense should be light year's ahead of last year's defense.
Then, there are still other improvements that aren't as well documented that will also help the defense.
* Mo Claiborne seems to be turning the corner a little and he should help some just because he missed most of last season. All he needs to do is be an improvement over Sterling Moore. That should be doable for him. He doesn't have to play like the 6th overall pick... he just needs to not screw up. They're asking a little less of him, I think and I feel like it is going to simplify matter for him and allow him to play better.
* Patmon, who missed a good chunk of last year, is back healthy and by all accounts he is playing even better than he was last year. He is smart and feisty and he has really improved his strength from last year. He will make a difference when the Cowboys play in their dime package, at the least. He might even take some play time away from some of the better known CB's if he keeps going like he is now. IMO, he is becoming one of the best corners on the team.
* Damien Wilson is looking like a very, very good player at this point. He will play a good bit and there is a chance that he actually wins the starting SLB spot... he is playing that well.
* Hitchens should be better in year two. The same goes for Bishop and Coleman.
Overall, there is way more versatility with this year's defensive players. There is much better depth all the way around, which will allow Marinelli to rotate his guys much better and keep everyone fresher and flying around like he requires. There are way more combinations that he can use with his defensive linemen, allowing him to play better to the strengths and weaknesses of the offenses they're facing.
Yeah, I'm trying to keep my expectations down... but looking at last year vs this year, it isn't very easy for me, lol.
