A roster question worth asking before draft about building our future

I mean instead of the best. Point being - although Osa is good, we need someone even better. Especially against the run.
Don't agree, a stronger positional group is needed and a real trash can full of dirt to work in.

He's fine and those sea gulls didn't take the last two Coronas and I don't care what excuse is offered.

The Cowboys did not lay out a big financial investment in Thomas (just $3 million guaranteed), yet he can fill a number of roles in Matt Eberflus' defense and in the locker room. He played for new defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton with the Jets, so he can help teach what the new position coach wants. He has also been productive with 8.5 sacks over the past two seasons.

Mainly, Thomas' experience will be a plus for a defense that lost some leadership in free agency and potentially needed a fresh voice anyway - Todd Archer

One of the most common blind spots we all have as fans is over-valuing too many players on our team. It’s understandable. We love the Cowboys, so we end up being attached to certain players. Even if they aren’t as good or important as we think they are.

So imagine looking at this roster now before the upcoming draft and asking the question, “If you can only keep five players to build for the future…for the next five years, who would they be?” Or put it another way, “Which five current Cowboys players would you value the most for the rebuilding the future of this team?”

For me, it would be these five:
  • Micah Parsons - personally I don’t like this guy; he talks way too much and acts like he’s a junior in high school but he’s the most talented player on this roster, he’s only 25, and could be packaged for a great trade or hopefully become the second best player on the defense.
  • Cedee Lamb - only 25, clearly one of the best 5 WRs in the NFL. And he’s under contract for 4 more years. Worth building around.
  • Tyler Smith - a beast at G and has already been a 2nd team All Pro. And he will be 24 next season. An anchor for another decade.
  • Brandon Aubrey - he’s the best kicker in the NFL and is a legit weapon. Kickers are fickle and can get the yips at any time. But imagine this team without him.
  • This one I struggled with…Deron Bland. He’s only 25 and has had an All Pro season before his foot injury. I still think he’s worth keeping.
Honorable mentions: Cooper Beebe, with great hesitation Tyler Guyton (if he can develop), DeMarvion Overshown (if he can recover)

Folks that’s about it. Those are the only guys I see on this current roster that should could be the better part of a roster rebuild. Frankly, this team is in desperate need of:
  • Talent at DL. Especially talented DT. Not some washed up JAG or a 3 year rookie project.
  • Young upgrade at RB. We need at least one impactful RB in this draft.
  • Upgrade at WR. Other than Lamb, the cupboard is bare.
  • A young LB that can immediately contribute.
  • Could use a S that isn’t washed up.
  • A QB for the future.
This team is in dire need of talent at multiple positions. I hope this FO is not playing fantasy football and has an actual plan for building a much better roster.
Bob, i like your post. I really do. I think, as you already mentioned too its an important question to also show where our roster is.

Just a minor point

Either you take existing contracts into your decission making or you dont. You did that once (with CD) but then you also didnt (Oza, Dak to name two).
Its ok overall because i got the feeling that you didnt use CDs contract as the main reason to keep him. Still you did and so i wanted to mention it.

Its so important that you showed that after your 5 players there is really not so much left. The next 3 players you would have chosen are medicore at best. One may even never play again.

I dont want to discuss if they are better or have a great upside. You were hard pressed to find even 5! Thats depressing to me. But then, and thats important: you found a convincing way to show how bad our roster really is.

To me if i had to chose 5 players. With the knowledge that our roster is really bad my goal would be to maximize resources and not to keep good players.

I believe that in the modern NFL you have to build good positional groups to win. Not having great players spread over different positions.
So for instance if you believe that the OL wins you games you gather 5 good to great OL players. Not 2 great ones and three medicore ones.

Why that? Because other coordinators will be able toscheme one or two players out of the game. They have to beat you in other ways when you have a overall good group with no weak link.

I believe in the trenches. Hey i am a big fan of Deion (not the talker he is in the media but the great player he was on the field) - but the lines win you the games. Thats at least my opinion.

With all oof the above said i would keep:

- Tyler Smith
- Brock Hoffmann (as backup)
- Oza
- Kneeland (rotational)
- Fowler (rotational)

All our "better" players id try to trade for draft picks. Especially Parsons.

As i mentioned before. In my experience you dont win with one or two great players. You win with groups where no single player has weaknesses that could be exploited. Of course in those groups you can - if you have resources left - implement a great player.

Our team is so far away of being good or competitive that Parsons or CD dont make a difference at all.
But what we would get for them would be a great start to find the needed players for my approach.

I thought about Osa Odighizhua too. He could also be on this list as a cornerstone. He’s only 26. I didn’t include him because I think he’s good but not enough of what we need.

We need Osa to become e the second or third best DT on this team.

This front office has no clue how to construct a roster in today's NFL.
We have wandered in the wilderness for 29 years under Jerry's stewardship with no signs it going to get better.
I am depressed as a Cowboys fan.
And their in lies the problem with this FO. They are always reactive instead of proactive with roster building.

They had to know the run game last season would be an issue so now the talk this season centers around drafting/acquiring RB’s and getting that going.

They’ve been doing this since Jimmy left town.

Just different position groups within different seasons.

And the kicker is there’s no end in sight.

I’m not sure if this is the type of answer you’re looking for but I wish Jerry would borrow a five year team building plan from his first five year team building plan. In 89 we drafted Aikman, which was a no brainer. In 90 we were going to go with LBer Steve Francis but thank God Cincinnati beat us to the punch and we “settled” for Emmitt. With those 2 picks aside what we focused on was building a strong front 7 and building offensive linemen. For the life of me I don’t understand why Jerry doesn’t borrow from the glory years with team building. Build from the inside out.

I would like a plan of building the team around the idea of protecting the QB with a strong defense and offensive line. Treat Dak as if he’s Danny White and prepare to have him for 3 years and plan accordingly. But please no more risky picks with premium rounds and let’s not draft a TE in rounds 1-3. Schoon and Mazi really hurt us. Mazi cuz he’s a bust. Schoon cuz whether or not he’s good we needed other positions.

But as far as player, 5 players, if I had to choose:
1. Micah
2. Tyler
3: Lamb
4: Aubry
5. Beebe, I love Bland but I feel we win and lose in the trenches so I got to go with Beebe on this one. It’s very close tho cuz good CB’s are valuable.
The shocking part to me is that we have a team in our own division that is built like the JJ team and has been to the SB three times in seven years—yet Jerry and son ignore this. And they are doing with a salary cap. The Jones Boys have no excuse besides incompetence.

I like Osa, but not for what we are paying him. He's a bit of an enigma in that he shows occasional flashes where it seems there is potential for dominance, but ultimately that is much too infrequent to treat him as an elite DT.

Love this one. Nice thought provoking thread. I absolutely, 100% love Aubrey, but if this is some type of an NFL re-draft thing and you are on the clock choosing between Overshown and Aubrey, you are taking Aubrey??? Not I

All said and done, Dallas had 3 consecutive 12 win seasons in a row. No matter if blaming the sea gulls or not, that is not complete and start over failures, even with the Coronas disappearing.

Extreme injuries was the dominant factor last season.

What did those 12-5 seasons get us? Nothing. Period.

"Just a flash in the pan", "they'll pay the salary cap price eventually", "we're building a sustainable operation", and on and on it goes

That’s a very good point. As I said earlier I probably should have included Odighuzua instead of Aubrey.

I guess I just don’t feel comfortable that Osa Odigizhua is a cornerstone but it’s certainly a fair point. Nothing against Osa but he needs to be the second best DT on this team not the best.

I would disagree with Diggs. Hope I’m wrong but I don’t see him being well to start the season. Two knee surgeries in two years for a corner? Big red flag for me.

3rd.

Need starters at NT and UT, w/ Osa rotating in. He'd be our Jimmie Johnson as the 1st guy off the bench at DT, something we've been sorely needing for a long time.

Here’s my problem with using the “Three 12 win season” argument…

Let me use a war analogy: The three 12 win season argument that this validates us from 2021-23 is like saying “we won 12 battles” but we actually lost “the war” in each season with the playoffs being the war.

The regular season is only as good as the playoff results you get with them. And I don’t mean you have to win a SB every year. Just make those regular season wins at least get you a divisional playoff win more than once every 29 years.

Get some more talent around him so he isn’t doubled and Osa should definitely be on this list

Where was this win rate while being part of the 29th ranked team vs the run?

As always Bob, Great read and I agree. Someone mentioned swapping Beebe for Bland (which is a great idea as well). I'd be OK with either... But in our rebuild, I believe we really need to get a tougher line on both sides of the ball... On offense, People who are going to protect our future QB as well as be able to create holes for our RB should we decide to run. On Defense, people who are going to stop the run in it's tracks....

Five years is an eternity in the NFL, and I hate projecting any player out that far. Even when teams sign core players to mega-deals, it's rare that they guarantee more than three years.

The way I see it, we've got at least two years out in the wilderness, just to stockpile enough talent to compete. Then if that fails, we launch another rebuild Cleveland Browns style. Anyway, I think our timelines need to be looked at much more shortly than five years.

Good chance he's done.
I would have already released him. Sounds “cold” but this front office needs a heavy dose of cold hearted roster evaluation.

We would be hard pressed to find a FO winning SBs these days who uses “we like our guys” as a guiding principle.

We need a huge dose of “No one on this roster is untouchable.”
