Funny you put down a coach who gave your team 2 super bowls. I guess it's no different than the romp we took from the Saints.

I'm not "putting him down," I'm trying to stop the revisionist history or the idea that Jimmy would just waltz in here and win 2 more SBs with this team because he would "storm up and down the sidelines."

Jimmy was the right guy at the right time in the early 90's, and drafted well because he was a) given a boatload of draft picks thanks to Herschel and b) he was still close to the college game.

He was given neither of those things in Miami and while he wasn't a failure there, he took a borderline playoff team and in 4 years turned it into a..... borderline playoff team.

He's even further removed from the game now, and even more importantly this team is built the polar opposite of his teams in the 90's - even if he came back tomorrow it would probably be 3 years of ripping this apart and putting back together to even get back to where we are now.

He's not coming back. And that is a good thing. I''m glad he was the coach of that Dynasty team, and I appreciate what he accomplished. But he's not the same level of coach like Parcells (or guys like Vermiel or Schottenheimer for that matter) that can just walk into any situation and within a few years turn them into contenders. Period.

He was full of himself and got his little pecker stepped on when Jerry said anyone could coach the current team then to a SB.
<snip>

Jones could have shown some restraint himself, not only with his mouth, but in wasting the fans' time and money with his post-Johnson, pre-Parcells attempts to improve the team. That had rather mixed results.

^ Uh, it's called "kidding," "tongue in cheek," or "not being serious.

I find your take regarding BP not being able to motivate players complete nonsense. All of this has nothing to do with Jimmy -- who is not going back to coaching btw.

And make sure you don't buy that fake jersey.

Your just repeating yourself.

We are a 500 team after 4 years and this is the first year we could do damage in the playoffs.

Jimmy rebuilt a far worse team and what did he have after 4 years?

People can't take constant criticism because it brings about to much thinking. In sport you need to think your indestructable because that brings about reaction and instincts which is what anyone needs to play the game at a high level.

Jimmy used positive reinforcement which is a far better motivator in my opinion.

I am not saying BP is not one I am saying he doesn't hold a candle to Jimmy.

Jimmy was a great coach. BP was and is a great coach. I'm glad both coached the Cowboys.

This is all about the idea that BP doesn't motivate guys by running around and clapping his hands. Frankly, if Parcells did that, I'd laugh my arse off just like his players.

Let me know when you bang out that sports motivation book, 'cause I'll be the first to buy it. Or perhaps I'm thinking "to" much.

I agree. Not all coaches are alike and coaches like Landry was completely opposite of a coach like Jimmy Johnson or Parcells but each of these guys know how to put a team together and get the most of their players.

Positive reinforcement it feels good for a coach you respect to take the time to tell you goo job.

Did you play sports?

How would you react to constant criticism?

What are your thoughts on BP face in the big loses we have had this year? Was it a face of gas or uncertainty?

I find that hard to believe. You act like a 3 year old who just got his candy taken away.

The Batman sig is kind of telling as well.

In your opinion being the operative words.

And where did this idea that Jimmy was a 'positive reinforcement' motivator come from anyway?

Unless your name was Troy, Michael or Emmit, his players got plenty of criticism. He ran one of the toughest training camps in the league, and it wasn't all happy happy feel good. He was never shy about chewing out guys when they screwed up, where are you getting this?

I am not saying BP is not one I am saying he doesn't hold a candle to Jimmy.
Ironically, one of them will have a spot in Canton and one of them won't.

Parcells like any other coach does not treat each guy the same, you take into account what makes that individual player tick. Some guy do allow praise to go to their heads so your careful of not showering him with praise. I would also add that Parcells is trying to get the most out of his player even more than they feel they have. Lastly one of my all time favorite coaches did not spend a lot of time praising players and that was Landry, much like Parcells Tom could always see room for improvement in his players and drove them hard to become the player he felt they could be.

"I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough and Doggone It, People Like Me"

Perhaps we should hire Stuart Smalley when Parcells calls it quits. He'll make all the Cowboys feel better about themselves.

Your not kidding, unless you were a star player Jimmy was damn hard on guys and was not shy about cutting a guy.

Why jump to one extreme to dismiss one aspect? I didn't say it was absolute but he did have an ability to build his players up in big situations. When we hit the playoffs his teams were ready to play.

So let me ask you this... just because he chewed guys out does that take away "How bout dem Cowboys" or similar pep talks? How about his bold prediction we will win this game? There is balance.

In countless interviews players have stated that Jimmy was a master motivator and the results are there to prove that to be true.

He was a master motivator, yes -- but that's more because he was an arse and ***'ed with people's minds. Not "rah-rahing" up the sideline.

Jimmy was a great coach, no argument here. But as someone said earlier in this thread, between BP and JJ, only one is going in the HOF -- and it's not the guy from Port Arthur, TX.

Jimmy clearly was a great motivator but former Parcells players also heap a lot of praise on him for helping to make them the players they became. There is no doubt Bill is a tough man to play for but he seems to have the respect of his players
