After A Strong Offseason, Sacks Likely To Follow For Stronger Lawrence

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/2...=10154204653022814&adbpl=fb&adbpr=99559607813

OXNARD, Calif. – DeMarcus Lawrence is one of nine Cowboys players driving a rental golf cart around the training camp complex with his name on it – a perk as a recognized winner from the team’s nine-week offseason strength and conditioning program.

Now he’s looking to build on the first two sacks of his career that came in the playoffs.

“You just feel like coming off last season, you have a lot more to prove,” Lawrence said. “They know I can do it, and now it’s just all about a matter of doing it.”

Lawrence was one of four defensive players and nine overall (four offense, four defense, one special teams) honored for their performance and improvement. Others were left tackle Tyron Smith, running back Lance Dunbar, tight end Jason Witten, wide receiver Cole Beasley, safety Jeff Heath, cornerback Tyler Patmon, linebacker Kyle Wilber and punter Chris Jones.

Strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik and his staff have developed, and adjusted over the years, a criteria scale for their strength and conditioning program. There is a point-based composite score for each player, similar to a decathlon scoring table.

No one helped himself more than Lawrence following his rookie season, according to the program’s grading system. He is listed at 265, five pounds heavier than last season. But his biggest improvement was leg strength – a vital trait for a pass rusher’s quick first step. He raised his vertical leap by three and a half inches, and his 10-yard split time was faster than any defensive lineman on the team...

--------------------------------

I think Lawrence is ready to really break out. And it would be very interesting to see how players develop once they hit the NFL. I wish they would release the workout numbers of all players. I know they do testing each year. It would be nice to see if they improve on their combine numbers. Decline, etc.

I think that it's significant that Lawrence was able to make these gains in his lower body coming off of a foot injury. Obviously, he wasn't able to train that much last season, but the fact that he was able to work his legs so hard, make the gains, and not have a further issue with his foot bodes well for this not being a chronic problem. The edge pass rush this season will be something to watch.

Man I can't wait to see this guy, his ceiling is sky high, his built like JPP, believe he will get double digit sacks this season and lead he team. When Ware came in his first 3 years he gained 5 pounds each year.

I wonder how the grading system works.

It seems as if players like Tyron and Witten would already be near their peaks in the weight room or any type of performance testing.

He's just saying that Lawrence made the biggest gains. The actual grading scale is an absolute measure (absolute, but adjusted for each person per their body type/position). So you can win two years in a row if you simple maintain your scores.

I don't think it is an absolute measure.

They test before and after and measure the improvement. I assume that participation also has some contribution to the grade. Tyron and Witten may get extra participation credit for being leaders in the weight room.

My confidence in this part of our team has changed the last couple of years. There for a while I was really wondering about them.

Can he be better than what we had in Anthony Spencer? That's the question. Spencer for the first few years was always 'close, but no cigar' when it came to sacks. I hope DL is more on target, and be just as much of a threat on the left as Gregory/Hardy will (hopefully) be on the right

I think he is going to have a nice season
Can't wait to see Gregory after a full off season. Gregory is never going to be big but he plays with nice power and he can sure get stronger
Lawrence looks like a different person
He has really devoted a lot to getting that extra strength
Great to see a guy like Witten still working so hard. Really important as you get some years on you
I would love to do their workout program

Not sure how it's done. I assume some is about participation
I would love to see their program
Might steal some of it for myself

I think Gregory, now that he is hopefully understanding how to shape his body, will be just as improved as Lawrence was this year.

2. Having the mental debate on which defensive end has been better in camp thus far: DeMarcus Lawrence or Randy Gregory? I have not been surprised by what I have seen from Lawrence, but it appears that the learning curve for Gregory is very small .

JWit one of the 9? Not a surprise. He's aging like a fine wine. LOVE him.

I agree. To add, the thing that makes me even more stoked is that we have young talent on both sides of the ball, with the right mixture of key veteran players.
