A thought about WR Roy Williams

I've been thinking about this, and I am going back and forth on this issue.

We all know this team needs speed on offense. There is really no one on this team (besides maybe T.O.) who can take the ball to the house when the touch it. Definately not Crayton, Barber isn't fast enough, and Witten is a big ol TE.

Roy Williams is a really good receiver. From what I can see he runs pretty good routes, has good jumping ability, and fairly soft hands. But he is far from a burner. He isnt really going to get behind anyone in the secondary. He is a fairly similar receiver to T.O. Now, I should add that T.O. is far from a slow receiver. He is deceptively fast. He finds ways to get behind you. But he isn't a burner, someone like a Steve Smith, or a Terry Glenn, or a Santana Moss.

What am I getting at? Is Roy Williams really the best fit for us? Granted you dont always need a speed demon on your team. The Cardinals have Fitz and Bolden who are the same receiver. But I really feel that this offense needs a true speed threat who can outrun the defense and has the ability to take it in for 6 anytime he touches the ball.

Let's just say that I'm torn between trading the 28 pick for Williams, who is a proven, good WR, or drafting DeSean Jackson at 28 if he is still there who I feel will be a playmaker in the league. The guy can move. There are alot of questions about his size, but football isnt played on the scales, or the combine. It's played on the field. If the guy can play, he can play...regardless of his size.

Thoughts/ opinions on Roy Williams and adding some speed to our offense?

Adding RW is basically creating a dominant receiver duo of 2 similar WRs that give defenses fits with their size and ability while also adding the "replacement T.O." for Owens' not-too-distant departure.

Hes also missed time due to injury every year except one including his college days, wnats to come here next year after his contract runs out, and would demand a $10mil extension which if given would cause issues with TO.

Not this year. No thanks.

I can't see how anyone would prefer Jackson over Williams. I see Jackson's biggest contribution to the pro game is as a return man. If we sign Jones, that would take care of punt returns and both Austin and Stanback have proven they can contribute on kickoffs.

You don't have to be a burner to be a number one receiver in this league (although I admit I like speedy receivers). With that said, Roy is plenty fast enough, it just may not seem so because he's a long strider.

Roy's injuries over the years is a valid point, but he's still young. I'd be a lot more concerned if he was closer to 30.

Jackson at 167 lbs will never last as a full time starter. And its doubtfull at this stage that he could put on any weight without losing some speed or quickness. He went to Cal, which has a really good weight program. If he could add weight, he already would have.

Roy Williams as a WR has a whole lot of 50+ yd plays in his career. Do not know why anyone can say he is not a deep threat.

The thought of having Roy, IMO, has more to do with the future than just this year. He gives you an OUTSTANDING 1-2 punch at WR, with T.O., for at least this one season. Then if you can't find a good way to keep them both, longer, then he likely becomes the younger replacement for T.O.

Jackson would be a good deep threat at WR, but you would have to constantly keep him in motion to prevent him from being jammed at the line of scrimmage. Unless he puts on weight, I can't imagine him every being the featured wide-out in an offense.

Having said that, we should trade up to get him.

We absolutely should not trade up to get Desean Jackson, that's a horrible idea.

For Desean Jackson? I can only hope you're joking.

Then two firsts, plus Flozell would not work for you either? Yes, I am joking, I would not want Jackson in the first round period. ;)

Roy is a deep threat, heck he ran under a 4.4 at his Pro Day. Jackson I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole before the 3rd round but I still wouldn't want him. Too LIGHT.

I like how everyone keeps saying "unless he can put on weight". I don't believe the kid cares about doing it. It's not like Cal has a crappy weight program and he didn't put on any while he was there. The kid either simply can't get bigger (which I don't believe) or he simply has an aversion to going to the weight room. he'll be drafted, by some team looking for the quickness for the slot and a KR/PR man and by the time his third year rolls around he'll be doing nothing but KR/PR or be out of the league entirely.

Yea Roy Williams is pretty damn fast, not like Moss or Steve Smith but far faster than Crayton and faster downfield than Glenn. He's just not "quick".

Whoops, thought it was 2000 for a minute.
