I went trolling around a Cleveland Browns board to see what they thought of Parker. From the threads I read, they seem to have liked the player and felt he did a pretty good job stepping in as a starter last year when he was called up from the practice squad. I couldn't find a single negative comment.

Here's what a member named Flugel had to say:

Last year's gem on our lineup that we rarely discuss HAS to be J'Vonne Parker. This knucklehead didn't even know Ethan Kelly was missing from our lineup so I'm thinking Parker did pretty well. He was a 325 pound rookie NT out of Rutgers that made the team and started something like our final 5-6 games. We're hearing alot about previous flops this time of year. I'm wondering what we truley have in Rideau, Cribbs, Perkins, Speegle, McMillan, Parker, Hoffman and Dunn.

J'Vonne Parker plays the run better the Babatunde Oshinowo and that is what the team wants fro mthe nose position. He is 6-4 and 310 pounds with the ability to add some weight to his frame and be a future NT for the team when Teds Washington has had enough of beating people up. I was a big supporter of Ethan Kelley last year, but haven't seen much from him this year. Nick Eason has looked very good in my opinion.

Interesting that they released Parker to sign Oshinowo.

No, they signed OT Kelly Butler and DE Jovan Haye. Oshinowo was released before Parker and added to the practice squad.

Ah...someone said otherwise in another thread. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read. :)

... this is from the Browns' Web site:

Browns add OT Butler, DE Haye
By Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
September 3, 2006

The Browns made more roster moves Sunday, adding OT Kelly Butler and DE Jovan Haye via waivers and releasing NT J'Vonne Parker and OT Kirk Chambers.

The Browns also signed eight players to the practice squad and reached injury settlements with DB Shawn Mayer and LB Clifton Smith.

Butler started all 16 games at right tackle for the Lions last year. He started the first three preseason games there last month, but didn't start in the Lions' preseason and was waived Saturday.

Butler will likely back up Ryan Tucker at right tackle for the Browns; ironically, he was waived by Detroit after the Lions' new coaching staff decided to go with Tucker's brother, Rex, as the right tackle.

Chambers started two preseason games at right tackle for the Browns while Ryan Tucker recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery. Chambers, a sixth-round pick in 2004, played in 21 games as a backup over the last two seasons.

Haye was waived by Carolina Saturday. He played in two games as rookie last season.

Haye was an early entry to the 2005 NFL Draft out of Vanderbilt and was selected by the Panthers in the sixth round.

Parker spent time on the Browns' practice squad and active roster last season, playing in four games.

The Browns also signed eight players to their practice squad; seven were with the Browns for at least part of training camp.

Those signed to the practice squad Sunday include CB Therrian Fontentot, CB Jereme Perry, RB Chris Barclay, OL Rob Smith, NT Babatunde Oshinowo, OL Andrew Hoffman and WR Kendrick Mosley. TE Buck Ortega is the only player who wasn't with the Browns during the preseason.

As part of the NFL International program, the Browns will have a ninth practice squad member this season - German DL Ulrich Winkler, who spent the entire preseason with the team.

I think we really pissed Crennel off by signing Parker today.

Good NT's are hard to find.

A lot of people here had been calling for us to sign a big NT; it looks like we got them one. I hope he can come here in decent shape and give us some security at backup NT. I don't know much about him since I don't watch much AFC football anyway and Cleveland holds NO interest for me.

is cleveland in the 3-4 system then?

Yeah Cleveland runs the 3-4. Us, Cleveland, Miami, San Fran, Pittsburgh, Oakland, New England, and maybe another team or so run the 3-4

I think Oakland went back to a 4-3 system this year under Art Shell?

I'm not so sure I like us signing anyone that has been released by the Browns.

While I agree there are very few Browns that I would want to bring to our roster. I would add that if it was someone that would be starting its one thing. He was apparently brought into give Fergie a breather ever now and again. From reports he's decent holding the line against the run and that is where his role needs to be strong. I'm sure that BP has seen all the tape and talked with Romeo in evaluating Parker.

You only have to worry about forums. Everything else you read is trustworthy.

There seems to be some credence to that,in that
Romeo, and even Weiss, are responding to Bill in players
coming to Dallas.

Yeah, In order for this to work out, we have to hope BP saw something at a glance that Crennel and his staff missed during the whole year they had the chance to look at him up close and personal, but I'm gullible enough to hope.

I really like the idea of an extra large NT. At 6'4 323, Parker should fit in well as a backup to Ferguson at the Nose.

It still bothers me that Parker is one snap from starting. To my knowledge, Cleveland isn't too deep at NT, so if Parker were any good, I doubt they release him.

Or maybe he's not. Parcells has said several of the ends can play nose tackle, so perhaps one of them would start instead if Ferguson got hurt.

If he wasn't any good, they wouldn't have kept him when they cut down to 53. They kept Parker and cut Babatunde Oshinowo, a draft pick whom a lot of fans here wanted in April and whom a lot of fans here wanted after the Browns cut him. Instead, we got a player who the Browns think is at least slightly better.

The Browns' final preseason game was on last night, and Parker looked like the typical nose tackle -- stout against the run but not much of a pass-rusher (he came out on passing downs). He also looks like he has pretty good feet and can shed blockers to make a tackle (after he came in, he made the tackle the first two times Chicago ran up the middle and made another tackle on an off-tackle run).
