The 53 and what it was/is

Part of the problem here is by the 1970s, there were strong and weak 4 man fronts. In these fronts, there is a gap between the DT and one DE; sort of like this:

Now we know that Manny Fernandez was a nose tackle in the 53, and that Bob Matheson was playing in the normal position of a defensive end. There is no way, just looking at the reports we have now, of knowing whether the 53 lined up like this:

I suspect, however, that the 53 was more like my 2nd diagram than the standard 3-4s of today. And given that kind of fake "over" lineup that it did cause a lot of confusion in the pro ranks.

Yeah I learned that if a guy lines up at DE (all the time) as part of a 4-man line but stands-up instead of being in a 2-pt stance then it's still a 3-man line.

According to about.com, Bud Wilkinson developed what is now known as the 3-4 defense sometime in the 1940s!

A 4-man line is defined as 4 down linemen.

A 3-man line is defined as 3 down linemen.

Thus, if only 3 defensive players have their hand down, it's a 3-man line -- even if a 4th defensive player is on the LOS.
