From 1960 through 1964 there was only one game to determine The Champion. Two teams squared off and the winner was NFL or League Champion.SuperCows5Xs;1918630 said:Now that's a freakin' joke!! Glad they changed it! I've heard they changed the system in 1990 is that true?
In 1965 the tournament to crown a Champion became 2 levels or games and it remained 2 games for 1966.
In 1967 they added a 3rd round that today would be equivalent to the Divisional Round of the Playoffs.
From 1964 through 1974 best record did not mean Home Field Advantage. they rotated who was the home team. That changed in 1975.
In 1978 they created the Wildcard Round and added the idea of the best teams in each Conference getting a bye for that week. Five teams from each Conference made the playoffs. Wildcard week the two wildcards squared off and the winner went on to face the #1 seed in the Divisional round.
It became 6 teams reaching the Playoffs with 2 teams earning a bye for the first round in 1990. This format has been followed ever since. The Cowboys have earned 8 byes counting 2007.
