I use the same argument here that I do when I debate Emmitt vs. Barry. Barry (and TD) were better pure runners, but when it comes to all around RB play (blocking, determination, vision, receiving, as well as running) Emmitt was the best.

Dorsett had great vision as well. I think when it comes to vision alone it is a tie.

I give Dorsett a slight advantage in receiving. He did average 8.9 yards per reception. Emmitt averaged 6.3 yards per reception.

Overall when you factor every little thing a running back does or can do then I give the nod to Emmitt.

Not even close, Roger stomps the overated Aikman!

To ansewer the thread I would say Emmitt. As for Roger or Troy one thing that gets left out if the fact Roger had some great WR through out his career starting with Bob Hayes and Lance Alworth then Drew Pearson, Golden Richards and Tony Hill as well as some very talented TE. Troy started with Irvin and Novacheck throw in Harper but once they were gone who did Troy have? No one of the talent level that Roger had around him. I loved watching Roger and you knew you were never out of a game as long as Roger was behind center but I think it is true that Roger had overall better WR through out his career than Troy did

I grew up a Staubach fan, my first favorite player, and my 2nd favorite all-time, but Troy was better. I think people remember Roger's highlights and forget that he wasn't always throwing a hail mary, or pulling off that last second win. Roger had some pretty bad starts to games that then turned into comebacks. Aikman was spectacularly consistent.

I would take Tony D over Emmitt, but as it has already been pointed out, who needs to choose?

In both cases, QB and RB this franchise has been more fortunate than any I can think of.

And our players were all GREAT IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. I get tired of the sum of our past teams being used to demean the parts. The parts make up the sum. Emmitt was great, Tony was great, Troy was great, Roger was great.

I agree all of these guys were great in their own right and each played the game with a different style.

I love your take on this, I'm a Dorsett guy for sure, he can do no wrong in my eyes, My favorite back easily. As for Staubach Aikman debate I think Troy was the best QB I ever saw play. The Prototypical QB. apart from being Deadly accurate. He had every gift there was to play that position, Smarts size and talent.

For those that say Smith "easily", I have to ask, did you ever see Tony Dorsett play???

I am not saying that in an insulting way but its a serious question. Dorsett was outstanding and is among the best backs in history.

Having said that I give a slight edge to Emmitt

If u gave emmitt dorsetts speed he would have rushed 25000 yards. Dorsett had no heart emmitt was all heart and a complete team player I cannot be sure dorsett was a team player. 1 game in each players career defines them to me for dorsett it was the 83 nfc championship game v the skins for emmitt it was the last game of 93 v the giants. Take ur stats take ur breakdowns take ur woulda coulda shouldas. I have those 2 games emmitt won a conference with a broken shoulder while micheal n troy were were shutdown completely If danny white had emmitt he would have won asuper bowl that's why emmitt is better than td and barry. Its funny how ppl say if barry played for the cowboys he would have had 3000 yards a season I say if emmitt played 4 the lions they would have won the superbowl. I give up I saw what these players did when the chips where down and u r on the road in the cold and ur team is shutdown! Emmitt came to life tony fumble and dropped passes!

I remember the day Dallas pulled off the deal with the Seahawks to get Tony. TD was an outstanding back and one of the best to play the game and I enjoyed watching him through out his career in Dallas. As you said I still give the edge to Smith

In the entire history of the NFL, only one team (Bears) can boast two first-ballot HOF RB's.

In August 2010, the Cowboys will become the second.

I don't think there's any RB I would take over Emmitt

so give me emmitt any day of the week and twice on sundays.

That's a fair asessment.

Good point, Emmitt and TD had 29,198 yards and 225 TDs between them. Again, the Cowboys are the ONLY team that can claim 2 12,000+ yard rushers, as well as their top 5 rushers (Emmitt, TD, Don Perkins, Calvin Hill, Robert Newhouse) rushing for 45,000+ yards.
