AC: Emmitt Or TD? Best All-Time Cowboy RB (2007)

While Smith probably wins out over Dorsett, I enjoyed watching Dorsett much more than Smith. Dorsett was much more entertaining.

Now, Dorsett has never been given the chance, but I'm willing to bet he would be a better television analyst.

I grew up a Staubach fan, my first favorite player, and my 2nd favorite all-time, but Troy was better. I think people remember Roger's highlights and forget that he wasn't always throwing a hail mary, or pulling off that last second win. Roger had some pretty bad starts to games that then turned into comebacks. Aikman was spectacularly consistent.

I would take Tony D over Emmitt, but as it has already been pointed out, who needs to choose?

In both cases, QB and RB this franchise has been more fortunate than any I can think of.

And our players were all GREAT IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. I get tired of the sum of our past teams being used to demean the parts. The parts make up the sum. Emmitt was great, Tony was great, Troy was great, Roger was great.

Great, great post. As a Cowboys fan, I feel so honored that when discussions like these arise, my options are not as limited as it would be for fans of some other franchises. For the record, I would name Smith, but my choice could very easily swing back to Dorsett; and that would be a great feeling of satisfaction for any fan to have.

I saw both play, both were great, but if you are the leading rusher of all time, how can you not be the greatest running back in team history?

If someone said here's your SB team now you can add Emmitt or TD to it....Choose! I'd be hard pressed to pick one over the other. Just different runners whose teams were built for each of them. It's not a coincidence that Emmitt ran behind huge bruising OLs. Nor is it one that Tony ran behind very athletic and mobile OL who ran a screen better than I've ever seen.

TD was a threat every time he touched the ball. Emmitt really wasn't. Neither would do as well behind the lines they played for given the same level of talent and size during their tenures.

So you can't really compare them well. I'd probably take TD. You can't game plan for speed like that as well as you can putting eight in the box. But you can't deny that Emmitt seemed to will his way to making yds even when they weren't there.

Tough call.

I grew up watching Emmit Smith between his running skills and the offense of line that he was blessed with gave him the key to the hall of fame.

In my eyes, there is no running back that will never match any accomplishments that Smith has achieved during his time as a running back on the Dallas Cowboys. P.S. Marion Barber is on his way. Go Dallas.

The two men are both great but how can anybody say which is greater? TD was faster and was smooth as silk.
Emmitt had tremendous vision as well as balance.

While they both played for Dallas they didn't play for the same teams nor in the same era. TD played for Coach Landry with one philosophy and Emmitt played for Coach Johnson among others with a different philosphy. The coaches were different. The stats don't tell the story. You can debate the issue all night but who can really say? I am just proud that both played for the Cowboys - both played for great coaches - and both played and won SBs. What else is to be said?

I remember reading a while back that when TD retired, that the Cowboys had a remote interest in bringing him back in 1990 to tutor Emmitt and be his backup. Man, that would have been something to see.

I have never ever understood this comment, especially popular with the Barry>Emmitt crowd. I am stunned that people can actually say this with a straight face.

Emmitt may not have had Dorsett's speed or Barry's feet, but Emmitt was no slouch when it came to taking it to the house on any given play. Emmitt had unparalleled vision & better strength, speed and feet than given credit for.

Emmitt is not the all-time leader in rushing TDs because he was only successful from the redzone. Unlike Riggins & Marcus Allen, his TDs came from all over the field.

Otherwise those bigger backs would have retained the record (heck guys like TD or Barry should have the record since they can score at ANY TIME).
