We have the third best talent in the NFL behind the 49ers and Seahawks..

Overrated? True? Can we finally make something of this talent? We even have guys who can easily qualify for this list after this year.. Smith and Murray on offense.. Hatcher, Carter, and possibly Church on defense.. When you look at it we are loaded with talent. Unfortunately our depth is not up to par.

Really hope we can finally make this thing work.. Cowboys have to be the most frustrating team to be a fan of the past decade bar none.

That was actually a very well written, fair article.

I've always thought we've had enough talent. Since 2007, really. The problem, to me, has been 1. injuries 2. coaching 3. lack of an offensive line and secondary. I truly think the second and third things will be much improved this year. If we avoid injuries, big things can happen with this team.

That's not actually what it's saying, though lol...

53 guys on a roster...Theoretically, you can have 10 players in the top 100 and the other 43 players ranking no higher than 250.

Meanwhile, another team could have 20 players all ranked in the top 250, but only 6 of them in the top 100.

Which roster is more "talented"?

Good skill position talent but like the article says, lacking talent on the offensive line also will add mentally weak and poorly coached.

It's where the talent is that is frustrating. No doubt, Romo, Dez, Ware, Lee, Carter, etc are great players, but the D line is mostly the same just a year older and the O line has one upgrade in Frederick that I think is going to be a stud for a while, but....Smith might be over rated, Free still needs help from the guard (who will it be?), and both guard positions are pretty poor performers.

Last year the Cowboys had the poorest rushing total in team history, even when they played fewer games. We really only upgraded one spot on both lines? In the preseason games, so far the starting offense has produced three points? Is that right?

No depth...and a GM that is .500 since 1997.

Hard to keep getting your hopes up, then watching the team implode because we have no depth and yet year after year we are maxed out with regards to the salary cap.

I'm hoping for 11-5....

It seems to me this article isn't about overall team talent.... It doesn't take into account depth..... Depth plays a huge factor in playoff success.

This is another of those examples where the OL is blamed (in part), despite the overall effectiveness of the passing game.

Meanwhile, with all this talent on the roster, we're -13 in TO differential, and with last year's injury problems with some of these key players, it's not really all that much of a mystery why this talented roster underachieves.

I know this won't go over well with some but we are one of the most poorly coached teams in the league. This is our problem and has been for some time....

Bingo. And has been the root of the problem for years now. One more year to see if we can get it right. He has been given all the tools to succeed. Some could say this is an all star coaching staff. Kiffin, Marinelli, Biacchi, and Cally are no slouches. Now can the main cog put it together finally? We will find out soon enough.

I think this is the most talented team we've had in a long time. The LBs, DBs, DL, WRs, TEs, RBs and QBs are very solid. The OL has its warts, but is improving with TFred as the key. The Safeties need to show something and the coaching has to improve. The main problem has been execution and discipline, playing football for 60 minutes, not always trying to turn it on and come back. I still won't be sold until I see it multiple weeks on the field and not on paper.

Eh, maybe. Good ol' Wade Phillips and his Cuppycake Camps have built quite a reputation over the years. On the other hand, I really think it underscores just how important offensive and defensive lines can be. Yes, we've had great players at the skill positions for some time now, but since 2007 (when I thought we had a real legitimate shot to go to the SB), we've really struggled up front, particularly on the offensive line. I think those issues have negated so much of our skill positions, it's not even funny.

I hope this year isn't just a continuation of that. But I'm starting to worry.

Definitely overrated. That's lazy. That's just looking at skill positions. Evaluate the entire roster. This team is average at best at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and I'm being extremely generous to say average in terms of the offense.

The Cowboys are a team of high highs and low lows. In terms of offensive skill position talent, you won't find a better team in the NFC; both edge rushers were in the Pro Bowl last season; and, the linebacking corps is one of the best in the league.

However, there are positions--specifically offensive line and safety--where they are starting players who would be hard pressed to start on some of the better collegiate football teams. They trotted out Bill Nagy at guard in 2011, and he didn't even start at Wisconsin. And last season, they were relying on Danny McCray at safety.

The talent acquisition at offensive line and safety must improve if this team wants any hope of a deep playoff run.
