May not but you fault them for even taking 2 fliers in the first place when a Pro Bowl lock costs the same. It's not about spending more and more and more, it's about spending the money you have wisely. Nobody can say a backup from Carolina (who was bringing and injury with him in the first place) who was allowed to walk right out the door and a guy who Cincy couldn't wait to get rid of is a better alternative than one of the best OGs in football.
Callahan does look to have been getting some results but as I have said every time people mention how they've gone after coaching to improve the OL, they had Hudson Houck who was also supposed to be one of the best OL coaches in the game.
I need to do my homework and look at the contracts and really see for myself. All along, I thought it was a situation where the numbers look comparable, but the reality was we planned to replace both stop-gap guys and/or revert Mack to an interior swing player, after we drafted and developed replacements, and that the actual money committed (really, the impact of the commitment on the cap) was a lot less than it would have been had we gone out and signed a super-Guard.
If that's not true, then I'd agree with you we'd be better off cap-wise spending the cash on one very good player and trotting out a trashcan full of dirt for a year before filling the other spot with a slight premium (2nd or 3rd round player) through the draft.
