Adam Jones signed a four-year contract worth $13.3 million or more.

This season, if he plays, he will make $700,000. He would get a $100,000 salary advance after he's reinstated. His cap number right now is $0, because he's suspended, but it would be $700,000.

In 2009, he has a base salary of $1 million if he plays, plus a $250,000 workout bonus if he participates in the offseason workout program and a $250,000 roster bonus. His cap number would be $1.5 million.

In 2010, he has a base salary of $3 million if he plays, plus a $595,000 workout bonus if he participates in the offseason workout program and a $255,000 roster bonus. His cap number would be $3.85 million.

In 2011, he has a base salary of $7.25 million if he plays, plus an unknown escalator clause that could push it higher.

We could cut him at any time during the contract with no bonus acceleration.

That's genius.

haha, good stuff as always. This looks like a nice contract. He's not going to be overly expensive even if he plays well and the fact that we can cut him at any time makes this a perfect contract IMO. Good work Jerry.

Thanks Adam.

That's a pretty big jump in base salary in 2011.

Any particular reason for that do you think? Or would the Cowboys look to renegotiate his contract after the 2010 season.

Thanks.

Very nice. As Woods pointed out, his contract will probably be negotiated before 2011 (if he stays with us that long, of course).

So this is essentially a three year contract. If he screws up and stays/gets suspended this year, a two year contract. At least if he does mess up, it does not leave us on the hook. I am still not too hopeful that he'll be playing soon. The guy is a knucklehead whose past may still catch up to him.

I wonder what the over/under on his playing is in Vegas....?

Sounds good to me. If he doesn't get reinstated, we don pay him anything & get a 4th/5th back from the Titans. If/when he gets reinstated, cost is minimal for a CB & robbery if he becomes a quality return man and/or CB. The first 2-3 years are really cheap but there's enough incentives built into the deal to reward him for his continued good behavior. The 4th year is much higher against the cap but cheap at the price CBs are going for -- particularly a few years down the road.

With Newman & Henry starting & the addition of Jenkins, we are set this year at CB. Presume Pacman can help out as our return man as soon as he reinstated. Once he's in football shape, we will see where he fits in. The drafting of Orlando Scandrick(?) & continued development of CB Alan Ball sets us up very nicely for quite some time. But it is very probable that we won't re-sign Anthony Henry when his contract expires after 09 season when he'll be around 34. Don't know how remainder of those other young CBs on the team figure into the equation.

Frankly I'd hoped we draft a SS who could step in for RWilliams if he got suspended again/injuried or we trade/cut him after end of 08 season (unless his play improves with Campo's help). Since we didn't, it appears more likely Hamlin would take over there (at least for 1-2 games) and either Pat Watkins or Courtney Brown would start at FS -- although understand Mike Jenkins is also an option at FS.

Thanks.

If he plays at all, and plays at his previous level of performance, we got an absolute steal for 2008 and 2009 and a bargain for 2010.

If he ever gets to 2011 and hasn't had any problems, we can either let him play it out, renegotiate to a lower cap hit or even just cut him if he's not worth it. But he has to make it to his fourth season with us before he would even get much of a payday at all (relatively speaking, of course).

I like this because the longer he stays clean, the more reward he gets. Think of what his contract would be if he didn't have any of these problems.

Holy crap. Did we have a gun to his head when he signed?

That is a steal.

I was expecting playing time incentives in every year to bump him up to a few million each year. (to get back his original contract money)That is even a bigger bargain in those first two years.

While its true that the 2011 jump is big I suspect it would be still below market for a top CB four years from now.

And of course at that point he has proven his ability to stay out of trouble or else he's already gone and its not even a consideration anymore.

More evidence that Jerry thinks a cap will not be in place in '11?

Based on current cap numbers, the cap should be $150 million or more.

That's possible.

But really, for a top-20 corner in the NFL, I think that amount within the context of salaries come 2011, isn't unreasonable.
