Adam Jones' contract details

I think that's a very fair contract with little downside. If Pacman stays clean he will be well worth the $7M in 3 years. My guess would be they would try to work on an extension in 2011.

But really, for a top-20 corner in the NFL, I think that amount within the context of salaries come 2011, isn't unreasonable.
True, and if he plays 3 years without a hitch, it's unlikely he'd screw up in a contract year.

The most genius part of this contract is it makes room for Tnew...as long as Pac keeps his nose clean.

I love me some Tnew, but I'm not sold on giving him a contract longer than 4 yrs. Depending on how Jenkins plays, and possibly Scandrick develops, I can see Tnew going bye bye.

I'm still not opposed to trading RW straight up for Tnew!

If he plays at all, and plays at his previous level of performance, we got an absolute steal for 2008 and 2009 and a bargain for 2010.

If he ever gets to 2011 and hasn't had any problems, we can either let him play it out, renegotiate to a lower cap hit or even just cut him if he's not worth it. But he has to make it to his fourth season with us before he would even get much of a payday at all (relatively speaking, of course).

If he even makes it to year four it means he's been well worth the money and by 2011 7 million plus will be a steal for a starting CB. We either pay him or extend him.

I'm telling you, if this thing works out it could be one of the best trade in the history of the Dallas Cowboys (sans the Herchel Walker trade). If it doesn't, the bad the negative stigma could haunt us forever. We haven't gotten past the "criminal" perception yet and Irvin's incident was over 12 years ago.

Holy crap. Did we have a gun to his head when he signed?

That is a steal.

No, but he did probably have a gun on his person. Mostly it was because Pacman was distracted by some large breasts in his face as this was negotiated in a strip club.

Good contract for Dallas. It doesn't matter if the contract escalates quite a bit by the 4th year. If he is still around for that year it means he has stayed out of trouble and contributed nicely on the field, which could/would justify that large salary. We shall see if it comes to that.

We could cut him at any time during the contract with no bonus acceleration.

Why wait for tomorrow for what you can do today................

In 2011, he has a base salary of $7.25 million if he plays, plus an unknown escalator clause that could push it higher.

No - I'm not going to say it. :D

It could be the cap thing, it could be the idea of paying a top corners value...But I think it has more to do with having a big old pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that the player can ONLY get if he stays out of trouble...aka an incentive that if you make it those years trouble free then we will reward you in that last year. However if you don't stay out of trouble you are gone or if you do not live up to what we believe your abilities to be we can just say...so long.

Here's the escalator clause:

In order to really cash in, however, Jones has to play at a high level. If he is named to two Pro Bowls or intercepts seven passes in any two of the first three seasons and participates in 65 percent of the snaps, his base salary would jump up to the 2011 franchise tender.

While its true that the 2011 jump is big I suspect it would be still below market for a top CB four years from now.

And of course at that point he has proven his ability to stay out of trouble or else he's already gone and its not even a consideration anymore.

You are right on. In four hears 7mil will be nothing for a top notch corner, assuming that if they keep at that number.

Great deal, especially for someone this talented...hopefully he keeps himself out of trouble then we'll have Pacman the WR eater for a loooong time.

Don't think anyone on this board even hoped this deal would be this advantagous to the Cowboys.

Knowing how Jerry works and thinks, don't be surprised if Pacman gets a new deal for 2010, IF he plays by the rules and excels on the field.

I didn't see this up here yet so I thought I would post it.

The base value of suspended CB Pacman Jones' four-year contract with Dallas is $13.3 million.

He can earn $700,000 in 2008, but only if he is reinstated. Pacman's '09 and 2010 salaries are $1 million and $3 million. He can get roster bonuses of around $250,000 in both those years. If performs at a Pro Bowl level during his first three years, Jones' 2011 salary can jump to the franchise tender.
