Adam Schefter hyping up Caleb Downs

Maybe, but he didn't win a lot of his matchups with Chris Olave in the scrimmage with the Saints from what I read. But hopefully, a nickel safety isn't going to be shadowing a receiver like Olave all over the field. Those are good tests for him in practice, but scheme should have him playing underneath routes in zone instead of manning up against the other team's best.
Darren Woodson was a monsterback at Arizona St which was considered a LB position and Jimmy had him covering WRs in the slot as a rookie in camp. It will definitely make him a better coverage guy.

Make it full screen and freeze frame it as it plays. Remember, the current rule is 3 feet down equals a catch at that point whether you're going to the ground or not. There was possession, one foot, two feet, and a knee (which is the same as 2 feet, so call it 4 feet now). Catch is done right there. The ball coming out without being touched is a fumble but he was touched so he's down at the spot. Excellent call without replay.

Other reports say from different angles, the ball hit the ground.
How is this different from the Dez catch?

I have not did the freeze frame yet though.

The difference is the rules have changed. Dez' no catch would be a catch today. Just like this is.

Who cares in reality? That was solid coverage by Downs, which is the real topic of discussion.

Yeah no catch. Stop it lol You have to maintain control as your going to the ground as well.

Here are your rules from the rulebook:

RULE 8 FORWARD PASS, BACKWARD PASS, FUMBLE
SECTION 1 FORWARD PASS
ARTICLE 3. COMPLETED OR INTERCEPTED PASS.
A player who makes a catch may advance the ball. A forward pass is
complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) in the field of play, at the sideline, or in the end zone if a player, who is
inbounds:

(a) secures control of the ball with his hand(s) or arm(s) prior to the ball touching the ground; and
(b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and
(c) after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, then clearly performs any act common to the game (e.g., extend the ball forward, take an
additional step, tuck the ball away and turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent), or he maintains control of the ball long
enough to do so.
Notes:
(1) Movement of the ball does not automatically result in loss of control.
(2) Player does not “survive the ground”: If a player who has satisfied (a) and then (b), but has not then performed part (c)
(an act common to the game), contacts the ground and loses control of the ball, there is no possession if the ball hits the
ground before he regains control, or if out of bounds, he regains control.

There's the main catch rule and then there are the 6 exception cases where those rules apply. I assume you're going to Exception #2, which is still part of the rules but is now not an either/or (you're either "upright" or "going to the ground"like it used to be). But you tell me how Olave did not have clear possession, get 2 feet down, and then did something like "an additional step" as outlined in the rules. Because this going to the ground version of the rules now ONLY applies where you did not perform part (c) of the main catch rule, which you can now perform either upright or while going to the ground.

What you do in practice you'll do in a game
That's taking the expression too far. If you're practicing bad technique yes. But, if you're practicing to get better against a top opponent that doesn't equate to what you'll do at a later date. It's called learning.

Oh my, an elite WR can catch a ball vs a DB? What should we do

So if our secondary struggles to get their heads turned around in practice they're magically going to do it in the games??

Same play here just somewhat different results. 1 WR made a great catch the other almost did.

People keep forgetting downs is a safety and a rookie lol He had some pretty sticky one on one coverage on Olave for a safety and had great coverage on a deep ball in which the ref said Olave caught when he clearly didn't. Heck his coverage as a safety has been just as good if not better than our starting CB's lol. I love that Downs is taking on the challenge of guarding the best WR's in camp. Iron sharpen iron.
I think of when Amari used to say, He's a rookie, like that's all you needed to know.

They changed the catch rule because of the Dez catch.
