Adam Shefter: Where Tony Romo Could Play In 2017

Here, in no particular order, are a few candidates to keep in mind:

  • Chicago Bears: Romo attended Eastern Illinois, and the Bears are expected to be in the quarterback market. They could be good for each other.

  • New York Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick will not return in 2017, Christian Hackenberg might not be ready by then and owner Woody Johnson loves to make a splash (see: Brett Farve).
  • enver Broncos: If the Broncos determineTrevor Siemian is not the solution, andPaxton Lynch still needs one more year of seasoning, Romo could finish his career in Denver, following the path of Peyton Manning. In a quarterback-needy league, Romo and his $14 million base salary for 2017 are expected to be valued and pursued.

  • Arizona Cardinals: If Carson Palmer were to decide to walk away from the game after this season, Romo could enter the equation. Arizona has done an excellent job of reviving veterans' careers.

  • The field: The other quarterback dominos have yet to fall, but if and when they do, Romo could come into play as a top option anywhere.
Should Prescott continue to play superb football, Dallas would struggle to carry Romo and his $14 million base salary next season. Moving on from Romo would seem as unthinkable as the 49ers parting ways with Joe Montana, or the Patriots with Drew Bledsoe. But as Bledsoe pointed out last month, the NFL is a replacement business. And now that Prescott has replaced Romo, the 36-year-old could replace someone else.

I bet Houston is kicking themselves for signing Brock Osweiler. They have 2 good receivers a good running back and a good defense would have been a great spot for Romo. But they're an idiot organization they turned down Peyton Manning before so they always screw up. They could have drafted Derek Carr too but refused to even look at him because of his brother.

Yep I remember them saying that they wouldn't even consider Derek Carr because of David Carr. They also gave Matt Schaub a big contract. They've never had a good QB and they've been around since what 2001 wasn't it?

Just looked it was 2002.

Funny thing is the organization knew him well. He spent alot of time at the facility when his brother was there. Probably a big reason why he has matured so quickly compared to most starting QBs is that he knew more about the NFL at 13, 14 then most QBs know at 23

Im going to throw a wildcard out there. Buffalo. They can get out of Tyrod's deal after this season and if they pick that option up he is due 27 million in 2017. I dont think its a forgone conclusion at all that they pick that contract up. If not they could make a move for Romo.

I'm not sure I see him moving his family to Buffalo to play and have to face the Patriots twice a year. Nobody but the Patriots have won that division in well over a decade.

Dont see why he wouldnt if he wants to win. Buffalo has a very good line, elite HB and very talented WR corps. Buffalo with Romo could steal that division from NE

The team isn't bad and maybe they could top NE but I'm sure Jerry will trade him wherever he wants to go, he's going to choose to live in Buffalo, NY? I don't see it, not a lot of great free agents chose to go there, I know I'd never live there. Anyway we'll see.

How much is $7MM in cap hits worth to the franchise? If they can get some quality picks for him, do they trade him before the draft and take a $20MM cap hit in 2017 or do they wait until after the draft and make him a June 1 cut, only roughly $13MM in dead money.

You can spread the cap hit if cut over 2 seasons by designating him a June 1st. Im not sure how that applies to any trade

Can't lie...I'd be similar to my guy @Risen Star is with Wentz. If my QB lands in Denver or Arizona (should Palmer walk) I'll have a Romo jersey hoping he gets a chip. Hate me if you like but...I truly don't care. Lol

I'm willing to follow Romo if whatever team he ends up with has a fan forum with a likes feature.

Sometime I think these ESPN guys read the CowboysZone:muttley:

This is almost verbatim what many here have suggested is possible--and described in the same manner.
