Adrian Peterson threatening retirement

MINN can cut Peterson on Sept 10th and not owe him a dollar. That is not a two way trust deal.

All MINN is doing is blowing hot air. They have not backed up any of their commitments.

He could have taken less money than the record 36 million guaranteed he got for a running back, and spread it out more if he elected to. Minnesota is fulfilling all of their obligations while Peterson wants to have his cake and eat it too.

His signing bonus was over 4 years ago and was only for 12m. It wasn't supposed to last the entire 7 years.
It is actually a 6 year deal and if the signing bonus wasn't good enough to last 6 years, he shouldn't have signed a 6 year deal.

He's just another spoiled athlete that is all smiles on signing day, but upset a couple years later when he has to fulfill the back end of the deal he freely agreed to and signed in good faith.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the guy who once equated playing professional football to slavery?

It is a two way street. That is why it is called a negotiation.

Peterson knows worst case scenario is that MINN has to pay him 12.75m to play this year.

It was a 6 year extension but included 2011, the last year of his rookie deal. Very common.

You are too smart to believe that tripe about fulfilling the back end. You know that is not how it works.

Ask DWare about the last 3 years on his deal with Dallas.

meh, i'm pretty sure in Minnesota partially garunteed each season he would be happy. don't think he wants *more* money, just wants some kind of guarantee for the money he agreed to.

The current CBA allows for teams to cut players without paying them money due on the remaining deal. If Peterson doesn't like that format, he should take it up with his union representatives.

and the current CBA allows for contracts to be renegotiated and allows for players to not attend voluntary work outs and doesn't impose huge fines for players who skip mandatory work outs. the current CBA even would allow a player to retire without giving back any signing bonuses paid to him (depends on how long ago it was paid, but Peterson would be clear). he's using the leverege he has, just like NFL teams use the leverege they have, what's the difference?

Reading Peterson's latest comments he comes off sounding like a dick.

And he's blaming the Vikings? Geez the Vikings stood by the guy longer than what they should have last season and he pocketed a ton of money for playing in one game.

He has a very valid argument and it has nothing to do with good faith.

MINN would cut him in a heartbeat if he wasn't still a star.

He received other guarantees on top of the $12 million signing bonus.

I know most players get cut (or a renegotiation) prior to their contract expiring, but if Peterson didn't structure the deal in such a way to force the Vikings to cut (or restructure) him, then he has only himself (and his agent) to blame.

When he signed the deal, he knew it was basically 3 years of club option at the end. If he didn't like that, he shouldn't have signed it.

Its not about the money, its about respect . . . . . :D

We all know that everything has changed after his arrest and suspension. This time last year I'm pretty sure he would be fine with getting 13m this year. He probably never even believed MINN would even pay him that much.

He is playing his cards and they are playing their cards. They both have moved all in. It will be interesting to see what happens on the turn and on the river

Uh ok. Ignoring the fact that he wasn't suspended, then just out of curiosity, how is the fact that he was "suspended" for abusing his son supposed to increase my sympathy for his plight?

He has hardly any real leverage. He literally loses millions of dollars if he refuses to play. All that the Vikings would have to deal with is the exact same situation they had (almost) all of last year: No Peterson.

It's not about how you or I feel, it's what he feels. He felt abandoned by the Vikings.

But they still have to pay him a crazy sum if he merely shows up. A very low threshold to cross.

And then they are in the exact same situation next year except they owe him 15m.

They should be down on their knees thanking god that he wants out of that deal.

A convicted child abuser that is due 45m over the next 3 years wants out of his deal and you want to make stay for why????

Poor widdle baby. I wish my employer would "abandon" me to the tune of $50 million over the past 6 years.

Why should they be down on their knees in gratitude when they can cut him at their own whim? As I said before, this contract is essentially 3 club options for the next 3 years. If the spoiled cry baby doesn't like those terms, he should not have signed the contract he did.

You obviously have an agenda. I guess Peterson must have said something bad about the Pats.

Oh there's a surprise.... someone bringing the Patriots into a thread that has nothing to do with the Patriots.

If you want to talk about the Patriots, please bring it to another thread. We're talking about Adrian Peterson here. All you really do is prove that you have nothing to say in response to my point, so you are desperately trying to change the subject. Can't blame you considering the point you are trying to make is a bankrupt one.

My only "agenda" is that I have a low tolerance for spoiled, selfish athletes that sign long term contracts in good faith so they can get all their upfront money, then complain about having to fulfill their end of the bargain a couple years later. Throw in the fact that he is a child abuser and that makes him quite a bit less sympathetic in my eyes.
