So I need to get myself some new shoes. I have a couple pair of shoes I wear when I workout now, and they're fine for that, but they suck for the occassions when I've went for a run.

So I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, give me some ideas, on some quality running shoes that won't cost me a fortune to get.

Keep in mind that the majority of my running will be done on sidewalks and on paved road. Occassionally I'm going to be able to get to my Simmons Center Gym, once I get the family memberships there again, and run on their indoor track.

But I'd say 95% of my runs will be done on the roads in my neighborhood. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I run all of the time at the gym. I picked up some new New Balance Minimus running shoes. WoW! It's like running w/ just socks on.

Great running shoe if you are looking for a minimalist type of shoe. I ran on the Nike Free's before and loved them and these are even better I feel than my old Free's were.

I'm a fan of the minimalist shoes, but they aren't for everyone. I won't run with them further than 5k or so at this point...maybe after another year or so and my legs have adapted.

If I were you I would go to a running specialist shop....not sports authority or *****. A place where people really know what they're talking about. Have them analyze your stride and whether you pronate or supinate. Get shoes specific to your body. Fit is very important, particularly since you're relatively new to running.

Lmao...you can't say *****!

!

this.

If you're not looking to spend a lot, I wear a pair of Under Armour workout shoes that I got for around 60. Lightweight, pretty comfortable...work for me.

No doubt getting your stride analyzed and stuff will help, but if you're not a track star, something like what I have should work I think.

Good thread.

Anyone had advice other than "work through it" about pretty severe pain in the feet while running.

I don't have a completely flat foot but I also don't have a really high arch.

My feet kill me when I run and it's always been something that has limited my ability to cover distance and to run in general. I quit running all together when I was done with sports because the feet were awful.

I wanna start running again but don't care for the pain.

Also, another issue I hate.

My calves basically turn rock hard and stress the hell out of my shin area and it hurts like hell as well. It's more of a shooting pain with each stride whereas the foot pain is like a constant deep ache that will go away a few minutes after stopping the run.....maybe like 10 minutes.

Any suggestions?

See my post above. Far too many people give up on running because of issues like these when they can be resolved or lessened by simply choosing the right footwear. Picking shoes for their looks, weight, and comfort is only going to work for a minority of runners.

You don't even need to spend more....simply have a professional match you with the right shoe. Almost every brand makes a shoe for pronators ans supinators, and at differing severities, at each priceway. It makes a world of difference.

I've been struggling with shin splints for a while now. I picked up a pair of Pearl Izumis that cater to my moderate pronation, as well as a pair of fivefingers....and between the two I've managed to control most of the pain. The Pearls give me the option to run further and faster, while the fivefingers help me with strengthening the muscles in my lower leg that I've essentially ignored my entire life. I hope to be able to use minmalist shoes exclusively in the future.

As for your shin pain, it sounds similar to shinsplints (although I'd be in heaven if my pain would subside after ten minutes). Perhaps you're running too much on your heels, letting your calves overcompensate for the muscles in your shin...which, like mine, may be underdeveloped?

Just a guess.

Where should I go to find a specialist. I don't want to simply google it and go to the top result.

I dunno if my shin muscles are underdeveloped but I've got pretty damn good sized calves.

Thanks for the advice.

I really wanna get running again even though I have always hated it but the pain just sucks. It makes me miserable and I'm seriously limping through the last stretch at times.

I think another issue might be my foot width. As I said, not flat but lacking an arch to a decent amount IMO.

A lot of shoes are just tight as hell on my foot.

The only decent advice I could give is to check with people who run in your immediate area. There are lots of good shoes out there but not all of them are good running shoes in various parts of the country. As example, Nike has a line of Air Max shoes that a lot of people like. However, here in New Mexico, we have Goatheads which are essentially Burr Heads all over the place. Those things actually puncture the shoe's Air Soles and then they are done. Might be the best running shoe in the world for all I know but they don't work well out here.

Check around with local runners and get some advice from those folks too.

I've been running in Brooks Ghost 3s for a while. Love them!

I just bought a new pair of Brooks minimalist-type shoes. They're called Brooks PureFlow. I've only run in them twice so far, but I really liked them. Very light. They're not quite to the level of the NewBalance mentioned earlier....they have a little more padding. They're sort of an in-between shoe....if you're not quite ready for minimalist running.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the information folks. I really do appreciate it. Great help. I think I've narrowed my selections down to either a pair of Asics or some New Balance. I've gotta go out and look into those, see what I can find, see what fits, but I think it'll be a pair of one of those two brands.

I am keeping in mind the Adidas Marthon 10's as well though cause my favorite pair of shoes I ever had in high school was a pair of Adidas.

I also thought about the Nike Free Style but I'm just not a Nike fan. I didn't really care for the sneakers I had in high school that were Nike, and they didn't last long at all, and i've got a pair of Nike Shocks (or however it's spelled by them) that were given to me last fall but those are the ones I currently run in and they suck.

I have that issue, as well. I went to a podiatrist who basically recommended buying some $500 orthotics and to stop running until the pain in my ankles and feet subside.

It's a total setback for me. I bought some new running shoes, but I'm going to look for another pair.

I'm a big fan of the Nike Dual Fusion shoes because they are lightweight but I'm not a big fan of the "shoeless" feel of the Free's and other minimalist shoes.

Some of the big show makers have discount stores.
Nike / New Balance
Google them.
The shoes there are usually the old models - but they are just as good as the one's in store. at about a 35% savings.

Me I like Nike. But that is a personal preference coming from a long time running.

I would only look for strictly running shoes. No cross trainer or workout shoes. These types are structured differently and will rip you up if you go out and run on the roads with them.

Same here. Can't stand Nike.

Like I was saying in that thread rkell posted, I think Asics are the best overall, but most brands have a good model or two. Brooks is a name most don't think about but they make good shoes, too.

I actually like Adidas but I almost can't wear their shoes because they run so narrow. No substitute for trying them on, I guess.

Maybe find the Dr. Scholl foot meters they have out ther. Buy the inserts and try it then. I have arch problems and use cookies, small inserts, in my shoes to help.
